Juan Reyes, the erstwhile Republican candidate for New York State senate who lost his GOP primary race by a wide margin last Thursday, issued an apology for a homophobic mailer he sent out days before the election attacking his opponent, New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich. “Juan Reyes personally apologizes for the hurt some of our friends, neighbors and fellow citizens felt — regardless of whether they are gay or straight,” his campaign said in a statement posted on its website. The mailer attacked Ulrich for such things as dining with a fellow councilman who happens to be gay, and for hiring several LGBT staff members. It also prompted a response and endorsement of Ulrich by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who called the attack “disgusting” and said Reyes “doesn’t belong in politics.”
