Martin Luther King’s Niece: Equality Advocates Are Going To Hell | Despite the fact that the rest of her family has embraced LGBT equality as a reflection of her uncle’s support for civil rights, Alveda King has dedicated her life to social conservative activism. The niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has made a career out of using her namesake to rail against abortion and same-sex marriage. In a new Maryland Marriage Alliance ad on the heels of its embrace of ex-gay therapy and “worthy of death” comments, King condemns the “unholy alliance” of marriage equality supporters trying to “redefine marriage.” She tries to convince Marylanders that opposing same-sex marriage isn’t just about being on “the right side of history,” but also “the right side of eternity” — in other words, all gay people and their allies are going to Hell.
