Troy, Michigan Voters Oust Homophobic Mayor

Another important victory for LGBT equality took place in Troy, Michigan, where voters ousted their anti-gay mayor, Janice Daniels. Last summer, when marriage equality passed in New York, Daniels posted on Facebook that she had to throw out her “I Love New York” bag “now that queers can get married there.” In January, she told a group of high school students that homosexuality is a dangerous mental disease, and when threatened with the recall vote, she compared homosexuality to the dangers of smoking. Daniels is entitled to a recount, but with a 52-48 defeat, it seems unlikely to change the result.
