Worldwide Transgender Murders Increased By 20 Percent In 2012

The Trans Murder Monitoring project reports that over the past twelve months, 265 transgender people were murdered across the world. This is a 20 percent increase from last year, when 221 trans murders were reported. The increase may reflect improvements in reporting, which also suggests the actual numbers are much higher than are currently known. Next Tuesday marks the 14th International Trans Day of Remembrance, commemorating the lives that were taken too soon because of violent transphobia.
