Libya Militias To Hand Over Arrested Gay Men To Government

Twelve gay men who became the subject of international concern yesterday are to be handed over to the Ministry of Justice, according to a senior official with the Libyan militia that captured them, and that there was never a chance of execution. In an interview with the Libya Herald, the official said that while the men were not straight, the main cause of their arrest was “the big noise they were making to the neighbours, as well as the large amounts of alcohol and hashish we found.” When asked about the Facebook post, now deleted, that prompted the concern, the official chalked it up to “poor command and control” and the lack of a professional communications team.
