"Maine Marriage Equality Takes Effect December 29"

Marriage equality will officially take effect in Maine on December 29. State law requires that a ballot initiative cannot take effect until 30 days after the governor certifies the election results, which Gov. Paul LePage (R) did on November 29. Given the law takes effect on a Saturday, same-sex couples may not be able to get married until after the New Year’s when municipal offices reopen.
