Last summer, Will Trinkle and his partner Juan Granados bought a family membership to the Roanoke Athletic Club so they could take their 2-year-old son to the pool. Two weeks later, when the club found out they were a same-sex couples, their membership was revoked. The couple sued, and the organization changed its “family membership” to a “household membership,” still refusing to acknowledge they were a family. Now, the company has apologized for that misstep and admitted Trinkle and Granados should be recognized as a family, adding that they are considering additional LGBT-inclusive steps such as providing health insurance benefits for domestic partners of employees. Trinkle and Granados say they are “humbled and honored” by the support they’ve received.
