"It Gets Even Worse: New Russian Bill Seeks To Ban Same-Sex Surrogacy"
There is no shortage of anti-gay legislation in Russia, and it just keeps coming. A new bill would ban gay couples from using a surrogate mother to have children. Its sponsor, Vitaly Milonov, is the same lawmaker who proposed the ban on “gay propaganda,” and he’s now worried that minors are still going to learn about homosexuality through the “loophole” of same-sex couples having their own children. Equating homosexuality and pedophilia, he doesn’t want gay people to “recruit children” by “breaking their psyche” (via Gay Star News translation):
MILONOV: At present, Russian law has a loophole through which members of sexual minorities are allowed to inform children about homosexuality. By and large, thanks to surrogacy homosexuals have the ability to inform a child about their lifestyle, values and views on gender roles and relations. […]
It is necessary to amend the Russian law banning the promotion of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors, officially registering a ban on the use of surrogacy for gay men and people with blurred sexual preferences.
Russia has already banned “gay propaganda,” and that law that is expected to create huge problems for LGBT athletes and other attendees of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, despite what assurances the Olympic Committee claims they received from Russian officials. Thanks to some influence from some American conservatives like Brian Brown, Russian lawmakers also passed a ban on same-sex couples in other countries adopting Russian children, which has already resulted in the end of all adoptions to Sweden.
Another proposed bill, expected to be debated in February during the Olympics, would use individuals’ same-sex orientation as a reason to deny them custody of their own children, treating homosexuality like alcoholism, drug use, or a history of violence, insanity and abuse. That bill’s sponsor, Alexei Zhuravlev, believes that children would be better off in an orphanage than with a gay parent.
Despite all these anti-gay advances, Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that the country is not homophobic. He also has said, though, that he believes “Europeans are dying out” because they support LGBT equality and “gay marriages don’t produce children.”
