"New Jersey Judge Denies Stay On Marriage Equality Ruling"
A New Jersey judge rejected a request Thursday to stay her ruling granting same-sex couples the right to marry in the state, effective October 21. Gov. Chris Christie (R) appealed the decision, but Judge Mary C. Jacobson rebuked his administration’s argument that the state would “suffer irreparable harm.” Instead, she said that any further delay to allowing same-sex couples to marry would cause them to “suffer many hardships of constitutional magnitude.”
Christie has requested that the state Supreme Court intervene, which means it could still stay Jacobson’s ruling. A poll this week found that 62 percent of New Jersey voters oppose Christie’s efforts to continue opposing marriage equality.
