"Indianapolis City Council Opposes Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment"
The Indianapolis City Council voted 22-6 Monday night to oppose a proposed amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage. All six “no” votes came from Republicans, but seven Republicans did vote for the resolution. Mayor Greg Ballard (R) had signed the resolution last week in anticipation of its passage.
Last month, the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce similarly came out against the amendment, but the statewide Chamber of Commerce has remained neutral.
State lawmakers granted initial approval to the amendment back in 2011. Republican leadership decided to delay the second required approval until 2014. Though Indiana voters are split on marriage equality, only 38 percent supported the amendment as of last December.
