Tina Fey Responds To Tracy Morgan’s Homophobic Comments: ‘Violent Imagery…Was Disturbing To Me’ | Yesterday, it was reported that comedian Tracy Morgan recently delivered a homophobic rant at a show in Nashville, TN. Calling homosexuality inherently “bullshit,” Morgan declared that “if my son were gay,” Morgan would “pull out a knife and stab” him if he failed to “talk to [him] like a man.” Tina Fey, Morgan’s co-star on NBC’s ’30 Rock,’ has issued a statement condemning Morgan’s comments. Calling him “too self-centered to ever hurt another person,” Fey said she hopes Morgan’s apology will be “accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers” who make the show possible:

“The violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community. It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person. I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at ’30 Rock’, without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”

Update

Chris Rock has come out in support of Morgan, tweeting, “I dont know about you, but I dont want to live in world where Tracy Morgan cant say foul inappropriate shit.” GLAAD replied with: “Language about stabbing kids for being gay isn’t ‘foul.’ It’s dangerous.”

Anglican Bishop: Clergy Can Bless Same-Sex Marriages | Chester Talton, an Episcopal bishop in San Joaquin, California has broken the ban against recognizing same-sex couples, telling clergy they may bless “same-gender civil marriages, domestic partnerships and relationships which are lifelong committed relationships characterized by fidelity, monogamy, mutual affection and respect [and] careful, honest communication”. The clergy cannot actually perform same-sex marriages, however, “until such time as both the Canons and state law permit the solemnization of the marriage of a same gender couple, and specific authorization of the bishop is given.”

Maggie Gallagher: The Phrase ‘Banning Same Sex Marriage’ Leads To 10-Point Drop In Support | The American Independent’s Andy Birkey catches the National Organization for Marriage (NOM)’s Maggie Gallagher giving messaging tips to opponents of marriage equality. She explains that it’s best not to mention that marriage amendments would ban gay marriage, since that suggests that “we are doing something that is pointed at hurting gay people” and results in a ten-point drop in public support. Following Bush’s Blueprint: Rick Perry Courts Religious Right Ahead Of Possible 2012 Run

Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow explored some of Rick Perry’s associations with radical social conservatives like the American Family Association and Rev. John Hagee — the televangelist who believes that Katrina was God’s punishment to New Orleans for hosting a gay pride parade and and has said that “Hitler was a hunter” sent by God in order to get “the Jewish people” to “come back to the land of Israel.”

As the Daily Morning News’ Wayne Slater explained, Perry — who is hosting an anti-gay prayer meeting sponsored by the AFA in August — has courted the radical right for years and understands that his audience “will see nothing wrong with the comments made by the American Family Association”:

SLATER: That large constituency of social conservatives and religious conservatives who will be important in early states like Iowa, South Carolina and Florida, will find this a very appealing argument will find their attitudes and associations with Christian conservative groups like the American Family Foundation just fine.

If Perry decides to run for the 2012 presidential nomination, he may decide to pursue President George W. Bush’s strategy of appealing to powerful religious conservatives for political support. He’s already courting Bush-era figures. John Hagee, for instance, held “much sway within the Bush administration” and was just “one of a number of evangelical pastors, social conservative” that “had a heavy influence on some of the White House policies.” In fact, when he was first running for president, Bush “enlisted Hagee to recruit other pastors to sign on to the Bush campaign effort.”
