Where Are The Biopics About Powerful American Women?

It’s a pretty reasonable assumption that every time Meryl Streep steps in front of a camera, she’s gunning hard for an Academy Award, or at least a nomination. And that’s doubly true for her turn as Margaret Thatcher:

Looking at this, it struck me that there’s an odd imbalance between Best Actor and Best Actress nominations when it comes to whether the actors in question are playing real people from the U.S. or the U.K. In the last 10 years, the real-life roles for which women have been nominated have relatively evenly split between Americans and Brits. On the American side, women have been nominated for playing consumer safety advocate Erin Brockovich, semi-obscure serial killer Aileen Wuronos, singer June Carter Cash, mother of murder victim Christine Collins, football mom Leigh Anne Tuohy, and cookbook revolutionary Julia Child. On the British side, they’ve been nominated for playing Iris Murdoch, Virigina Woolf, Laura Henderson, Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II.

Men, on the other hand, if they’re nominated for biopics, are heavily nominated for playing American men. They’ve gotten nods for playing Jackson Pollock, John Nash, Muhammad Ali, Bill the Butcher, Charlie Kaufman, Ray Charles, Howard Hughes, Truman Capote, Johnny Cash, Edward R. Murrow, Chris Gardner, Harvey Milk, and Richard Nixon. The exception to the other side of the pond is Johnny Depp who was nominated for playing J.M. Barrie.

What makes the gap interesting, I think, is that the British roles for women are for the most part, so much meatier than the American ones. June Carter Cash and Julia Child are obviously both very famous, but Erin Brockovich, Leigh Anne Tuohy, Aileen Wuronos, and Christine Collins are much more minor or transitory ones, who aren’t nearly as powerful or as long-lasting as English queens or Virginia Woolf. With a few exceptions, like Chris Gardner, the American biopics for men are about men who were very famous before their stories were told on film.

It’s not like there aren’t good stories about famous American women that aren’t worth telling. How awesome would a Harriet Tubman biopic be? What about Martha Washington or Abigail Adams? If you want Terrence Malick to make something dreamy, what about Emily Dickinson? Something sensationalistic, fun, and quietly feminist? Do Annie Oakley. I’m a nerdy Anglophile, and there are a lot of awesome British women. But it’s funny that we tell more stories about powerful British women than powerful American ones.

The High Costs Of Ex-Gay Therapy

Rep.  Michele Bachmann, the Republican presidential hopeful from Minnesota, wants you to know that if you’re gay, she might not love you just the way you are.

An undercover investigation conducted by Truth Wins Out found that Bachmann & Associates – the counseling firm owned by Bachmann’s husband Marcus – employs therapists offering “reparative” ex-gay therapy that promises to wash that gay away. Awkwardly for Michele, the anti-government Tea Partyer, not everyone who seeks the clinic’s services enjoys coverage from an insurance plan sponsored by a private employer, meaning that the clinic may have billed the government’s Medicaid program for thousands of dollars in reimbursements for counseling services aimed at turning gay people straight.

Subjecting gay people to pseudoscientific “therapy” (and billing Medicaid for it) does more than put Dr. Bachmann’s unlicensed clinic in the crosshairs of an investigation into both his psychotherapy credentials and his wife’s anti-government bonafides. Ex-gay therapy of the kind practiced by Bachmann & Associates isn’t just hypocritical and widely discredited as ineffective – it’s dangerous. Professional associations such as the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Psychiatric Association have all condemned reparative therapy. According to the American Psychiatric Association, “the potential risks of ‘reparative therapy’ are great, including depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior.”

The good doctor Bachmann isn’t alone in his professed belief that gay people are “barbarians” in need of discipline and punishment. This attitude feeds pervasive discrimination against gay (and transgender) people and their families in employment, relationship recognition, health care, education, and housing. The constant stress of coping with this discrimination contributes to significant health issues for gay and transgender people, including higher rates of substance use, anxiety, depression, and suicide.

Beliefs that gay people need to be “cured” of their sexual orientation also contribute to harassment and violence against gay people and anyone else who doesn’t conform to rigid stereotypes of gender and sexuality. In 2008, more than 2,400 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people were victims of crimes perpetrated against them on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Significant underreporting means that the actual number of hate crimes against gay and transgender people is probably much higher than the statistics show.

Ex-gay therapy tears at the mental health of gay people while contributing to the poisonous attitudes that mark them as targets for violence and discrimination. And for this “therapy,” it’s society as a whole that foots the bill: every blow at the ability of gay people to take care of themselves and their families has its costs, whether in the loss of a job because of harassment, days missed at school because of bullying, or medical bills for dealing with depression or the aftermath of violence.

And while we all pay, Dr. Bachmann profits.

Update

The ex-gay therapy practiced by Bachmann & Associates isn’t just a boondoggle on Medicaid or an engaging tabloid sideshow to the Republican presidential contest. As this year’s annual report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs shows, intolerant attitudes toward homosexuality and gender variance fuel a culture of anti-gay and anti-transgender violence across the U.S. This violence divides gay and transgender people from their families, makes streets unsafe for LGBT people, particularly people of color, and leads gay and transgender people, particularly young people, to hurt themselves out of the belief that something must be wrong with them. Ex-gay therapy doesn’t help – it hurts.

Thrice-Married Gingrich Won’t Sign FAMiLY LEADER’s Fidelity Pledge Unless Changes Are Made

ThinkProgress filed this report from Pella, Iowa.

Thrice-married and twice-divorced Newt Gingrich — who addressed the FAMiLY Leader’s presidential forum this morning — isn’t prepared to join Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum in signing the group’s controversial 14-point “Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage‘” pledge. Vow 1 states, “Personal fidelity to my spouse.” Gingrich suggested he and his staff are urging the LEADER to make some changes to the document:

REPORTER: Have you signed the FAMiLY Policy Center pledge?

GINGRICH: No, we’ve talked about it. Vince Haley, who’s my policy director, is gonna work with Bob and others to work through some things.

Watch it:

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond confirmed to Hotline that the former House Speaker told Vander Plaats that they should work together to make some alterations. “We’re happy to work with you to sharpen it so people understand where we’re going with it,” Gingrich told Vander Plaats, according to Hammond. “It’s not there yet.”

The FAMiLY Leader does not believe that Gingrich’s past infidelities disqualify him from signing the document. “This vow and this pledge is not intended to beat any person up, any candidate up for their past,” Vander Plaats said last week. “It’s about looking forward to the future and embracing the authenticity of one man, one woman marriage and its impact on the family.”

Vander Plaats has already backed down from the document’s anti-porn language, saying that its restrictions against “all forms of pornography” should be interpreted narrowly and not be construed as a “nationwide ban.” The group has also removed a statement in the preamble of the pledge alleging that children born into slavery came from stronger families than today’s African Americans.

Update

Gingrich and his associates have previously funneled $200,000 to Vander Plaats’ Iowa for Freedom group, of which Family Leader was a part, as well as other right-wing organizations within Iowa.

Illinois Abandons Contract With Catholic Charities’ Adoption Services | The state of Illinois will abandon future contracts with Catholic Charities’ adoption and foster care services because of their unwillingness to comply with the state’s new civil unions law. After it took effect last month, several dioceses ended their services rather than place children with same-sex couples, and some have filed suit for an injunction to discriminate against same-sex couples. Any of the agencies who do continue providing adoption services will do so without state funding starting in 2012.

Anti-Gay Group Would Give Death Awards To Republicans Who Supported Marriage Equality | Via Jeremy Hooper at Good As You: The National Organization for Marriage today crossposted an article from the Tea Party Review in which Doc Holliday awarded “Tombstone Awards” to the four Republican New York state senators who voted for marriage equality last month. Hooper notes that “This ‘Doc Holliday’ didn’t say it was for ‘the actions’: He said the cemetery-invoking award goes to the Senators. The people. The mortal humans.”

Bachmann, Santorum Distanced Themselves From ‘Gay Is A Public Health Risk’ Vow Before Endorsing It

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum may have been the first presidential contenders to sign on to The FAMiLY Leader’s extremist pledge calling for a ban on pornography, arguing that homosexuality is a choice, and implying that black people had stronger families during slavery, but they weren’t always so eager to align themselves with the conservative organization. In fact, during separate appearances before the Leader’s presidential forum, neither Bachmann nor Santorum endorsed the group’s view that homosexuality was a public health risk akin to second hand smoking. Bachmann was left speechless when pressed on the allegation by ThinkProgress while Santorum simply responded “no.” Watch it:

But by signing the pledge, both candidates went back on their word. Footnote 4 of “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMILY” claims that homosexuality causes shorter life expectancy and a higher probability of sexually transmitted diseases. “[W]e estimate that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years will not reach their 65th birthday,” the group notes quoting a study from 1997.

Last Friday, the LEADER backed down in the face of criticism over its anti-porn language in the pledge. The group said its restrictions against “all forms of pornography” should be interpreted narrowly and not be construed as a “nationwide ban,” but still suggested that almost all porn is illegal. It has also removed a statement in the preamble of the pledge alleging that children born into slavery came from stronger families than today’s African Americans.

Ninth Circuit Threatens To Dismiss DADT Suit | According to an order filed today in the Log Cabin Republicans’ suit against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has asked the government to “show cause why this case should not be dismissed as moot, either immediately or upon such time as the President certifies that all conditions for the repeal of § 654 set forth in the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act have been satisfied.”

Ruben Diaz Touts Support Of Woman Who Claimed Homosexuality Is More Threatening Than Terrorism

Sen. Rubén Díaz was proud to be the only Democrat who voted against marriage equality in New York last month. In the lead-up to the vote, he welcomed religious leaders to his anti-equality rally who said gay people “are worthy of death,” lied about the religious protections in the original bill, and scapegoated his lesbian granddaughter to excuse his intolerance. Now, he’s reaching out to thank the people who have supported him for wearing his anti-equality “badge of honor.” Most of the support he’s gotten is anonymous, but two notable names on the list include Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern (R):

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan: “I have read your July 7 piece. Bravo! Consider me a grateful ally who admires you deeply. In Christ, +Timothy M. Dolan”

Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern: “Sen. Diaz, you are in my prayers. Three years ago I was the target of the homosexuals because of statements I made regarding the dangers of the homosexual agenda. So I know what you are going through. Continue to stand strong on God’s Word. What the homosexuals mean for evil toward you, God will use for His glory, your good, and the benefit of others. God bless you and your family.”

Dolan has constantly attacked the LGBT community during the New York marriage debate over the past few months, comparing same-sex marriage to incest, polygamy, and a community dictatorship, calling it “detrimental to the common good,” and suggesting that it will lead to changing the rules of America’s pastime. And among the many offensive things Kern has said and promoted, none stands out quite like her 2008 declaration that “the homosexual agenda is just destroying this nation” and that homosexuality poses a bigger threat to the U.S. than terrorism.

It seems Díaz is in good company.

New York DA: Clerks Who Refuse To Issue Marriage Licenses To Gay Couples Will Be ‘Subject To Criminal Prosecution’

Kathleen Rice, the district attorney for Nassau County, New York, is warning county and city clerks that any attempts to deny gay and lesbian couples marriage licenses under the state’s recently enacted marriage equality law will be met with swift legal action. The notice comes on the heels of reports that Barbara MacEwen, town clerk of Volney in Oswego County, may refuse to issue the licenses on religious grounds. Rice took a firm stance in a letter to clerks in Nassau County:

The Marriage Equality Act provides that an application for a marriage license cannot be denied on the grounds that the applicant parties are of the same sex and the law affords no discretion to public officials charged with granting marriage licenses. Therefore, any such refusal may be subject to criminal prosecution.

The religious exemptions in the Marriage Equality Act are inapplicable to town and city clerks serving in their license-granting roles, and a public official’s intentional refusal to issue marriage licenses to qualified same-sex couples may constitute Official Misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor defined in section 195.00 of the New York State Penal Law.

Indeed, while the law’s exemptions protect religious organizations and affiliated individuals from accommodating same-sex marriages, it does not absolve city employees from fulfilling their job responsibilities.

Some anti-gay groups are touting MacEwen’s resistance and will undoubtedly work to undermine the law and insert themselves into press reports about the very first New York marriages. The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), for instance, has already announced that it intends to protest same-sex marriages in Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, and New York City — the districts of the four Republican senators “who broke with their party and voted to pass the marriage equality bill.”

Gary Johnson Condemns FAMiLY Leader Pledge As ‘Promise To Discriminate’

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson

Republican presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson spoke out over the weekend against the FAMiLY LEADER’s “marriage vow” that rivals Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) have already signed. Arguing that “government should not be involved in the bedrooms of consenting adults,” Johnson condemned the pledge as “unRepublican” and a “promise to discriminate“:

This ‘pledge’ is nothing short of a promise to discriminate against everyone who makes a personal choice that doesn’t fit into a particular definition of ‘virtue’.

While the Family Leader pledge covers just about every other so-called virtue they can think of, the one that is conspicuously missing is tolerance. In one concise document, they manage to condemn gays, single parents, single individuals, divorcees, Muslims, gays in the military, unmarried couples, women who choose to have abortions, and everyone else who doesn’t fit in a Norman Rockwell painting.

Johnson has spoken out in favor of gay rights issues, supporting civil unions and suggesting that President Obama has been too slow to end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R), who also supports civil unions, said he would not sign the pledge, but only because he never signs any pledges.

Opponents Of CA LGBT History Bill: Learning About Gay People Will Turn Kindergarteners Gay | Randy Thomasson of SaveCalifornia.com explains that California’s FAIR bill — which requires public schools to include the contributions of gays and lesbians in social studies curriculum — would teach children to admire LGBT people, and would result in “children as young as kindergarten being told that homosexuality, bisexuality is good and natural…and healthy…and it would be something they would be told to support and perhaps even think about for themselves.” Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has not said if he will sign the legislation, but Thomasson expects that he will. Watch it:
