Openly Gay GOP Presidential Candidate Threatens Florida With Orange Juice Boycott | Openly gay GOP presidential candidate Fred Karger announced that he would boycott Florida orange juice if the state moves up its primary from March to January. Speaking in Manchester, New Hampshire this afternoon, Karger warned that “the clock is ticking!” “I’m giving them until November 1 — that’s 18 days away — or I will launch a boycott of Florida orange juice.” Watch it:

Given that Anita Bryant, who campaigned against gay rights across the United States in the 1970s, was once the spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission, Karger’s boycott has a special kind of symbolism.

Elton John And Sen. Bill Nelson Urge Congress To Maintain Funding For HIV/AIDS Medication

Elton John and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) have an op-ed in Politico this morning urging Congress to increase funding for programs that provide access to HIV/AIDS drugs. “All 50 states now have assistance programs for people with low income, living with the disease. But, in an increasing number, the need for these medications is greater than federal and state funding,” the two warn, arguing that “these cuts will only lead to higher costs to taxpayers in the long run“:

First, patients who lose their assistance and are forced off HIV medications could develop drug-resistant strains of HIV — which may well be more difficult to manage.

Second, denying treatment to low-income, HIV-positive people will most likely result in increased transmission of the disease. A recent, groundbreaking study by the National Institutes of Health demonstrated that people living with HIV who receive effective drug treatment are 96 percent less likely to pass the virus on to their uninfected partners.

Third, while HIV/AIDS medications are expensive, the emergency room and hospital care required by people who do not receive them is far more costly.

While Congress debates funding levels for the next fiscal year — President Obama asked Congress to increase funding for AIDS medications to $940 million in the next fiscal year, but a Senate appropriations subcommittee has only approved $900 million — HHS has recently released $1.89 billion in grants through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. Approximately $1.213 billion will be sent to states and territories under Part B of the Ryan White Program, with $813 million of that total designated specifically for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). ADAP is a national initiative funded by the federal and state governments and run by the states that provides prescription drug coverage for low-income people with HIV/AIDS. As of October, 7,409 individuals in 10 states were waiting to sign up for the program.

Meanwhile, health advocates continue to fight against cuts to health care programs that HIV/AIDS patients rely on. Earlier this week, House members from California met with CMS Administrator Donald Berwick and urged him to deny the state’s request to cut $1.4 billion from Medicaid, the single largest source of coverage for people with HIV.

Don Imus Urges Chris Wallace To Ban ‘Bigoted Idiots Like Rick Santorum’ From Fox News Sunday

This morning, radio host Don Imus urged Fox News’ Chris Wallace to stop inviting “bigoted idiots like Rick Santorum” on his Sunday political talk show, saying that Santorum “diminishes your program” by suggesting that openly gay and lesbian soldiers “cause problems for people living in close quarters.” Imus’ remarks come after Santorum appeared on Fox News Sunday and doubled down on his claim that the recent repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell inserts “sexual activity” into the military. Watch the exchange:

Wallace also hit back against criticism from Ann Coulter, who said that “Juan Williams should have punched Chris Wallace in the face” for likening Santorum’s rhetoric about gay people to the arguments deployed by opponents of racially integrating the military during the 1940s. “You know, ever since Ms. Coulter attacked the 9/11 widows and said they were self-promoters, who were enjoying their husband’s death on 9/11, I stopped paying attention to her,” he said. With Just Two Openly Gay Appointees, President Obama Triples The Number Of Out Federal Judges | Later today, the Senate is expected to confirm Alison Nathan to as a United States District Judge in New York City. Nathan will be the second openly gay Obama appointee confirmed to the federal bench. Sadly, this means that President Obama has now appointed two-thirds of the openly gay attorneys ever appointed as a life-tenured federal judge. President Clinton appointed the third out judge, Judge Deborah Batts.

Update

It’s worth noting that Chief Judge Emily C. Hewitt of the United States Court of Federal Claims is also a lesbian, although Hewitt’s serves on an Article I court, meaning that she does not have life tenure and only has jurisdiction over very limited matters.

Update

Nathan was just confirmed 48-44 on an entirely party-line vote.

Hasidic Jews Claim New York Marriage Law Caused ‘Surge’ Of Pedophilia

A New York City group known as the Jewish Political Action Committee (JPAC) is now alleging that the legalization of same-sex marriage has led to a “surge” of child molestation:

The Jewish Political Action Committee is now organizing an awareness program to stop Gay molesters from attacking children and teens. Since the gay marriage bill in New York was introduced, there has been a surge of gay attacks against youngsters in New York. Children and teens are now at the mercy of the militant gay liberals who are brainwashing society to their evil.

The group is distributing signs that condemn homosexuality as a sin worse than murder and that claim “G-d sent AIDS to punish male gays.”

While JPAC’s efforts may be small and local, they reflect a renewed trend among anti-gay groups trying to connect homosexuality and pedophilia, even though the two are mutually exclusive phenomenon that cannot be compared. Anita Bryant and John Briggs were making the same claims 40 years ago as they fought against gay rights, but groups like the National Organization for Marriage, the Family Research Council, the Liberty Counsel, and the American Family Association have all recently been promoting the connection again.

These efforts to demonize the LGBT community reveal a complete misunderstanding of the nature of sexual orientation that dates back decades. Watch gay activist Harvey Milk debate John Briggs in 1978, challenging him on the very same claims that gays were more likely to be child molesters (and thus should not be allowed to teach):

Mark Grisanti, James Alesi, Stephen Saland, and Roy McDonald — “a windfall by Albany standards.” “In the first six months of this year, state senators raised an average of $103,000 apiece, according to the New York Public Interest Research Group.”

Heckler At Bloomberg Debate Was Offended By Santorum’s Anti-Gay Answer

Iraq War Veteran Andrew Vera

At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s Republican presidential debate, Rick Santorum subtly attempted to blame the country’s economic woes on the rise of same-sex marriage. His answer inspired a heckler in the audience to respond after he had finished speaking. Patch.com has identified the person shouting as Iraq War veteran Andrew Vera, who says that he wanted to stand up for the gay soldier who was booed at a previous debate:

VERA: I said, ‘Yeah, right, you say you want American Values back in the American Family, then where were you, when they booed the gay soldier during the last debate.’ Let’s get real. As an Iraq Veteran, I think it’s pitiful.[...] No regrets at all. I served in the US Navy, in support and defense of the constitution. It’s a living document.

Vera is a graduate of Darmouth College, where the debate was held, and says his act of civil disobedience reflected his pride serving in the military.

Watch the moment from the debate when Vera spoke out:

Tony Perkins Blames Gays For The Economy | Opponents of marriage equality held a rally in Concord, New Hampshire on Wednesday morning as part of the Family Research Council’s Values Voters bus tour. GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke at the event as did FRC President Tony Perkins, who tried to blame gay people for the economic downturn. “You want to get the economy going again? We need to put a focus on marriage and on children, because that is our future,” Perkins said. “Look at the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and growing the GDP – we’ll never grow the GDP with a shrinking population.” The group also tried to build support for repealing the state’s same-sex marriage law, which the legislature is expected to take up in the next session.
