Marriage Equality Case Advances In New Jersey | A New Jersey judge has ruled a lawsuit challenging the state’s civil unions can proceed, but noted that the state does not guarantee a fundamental right for same-sex couples to marry. The lawsuit, filed by seven same-sex couples, argues that civil unions do not provide equal protection under the law. In 2006, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in Lewis v. Harris that “every statutory right and benefit conferred to heterosexual couples through civil marriage must be made available to committed same-sex couples.” The New Jersey legislature responded to the decision by legalizing civil unions, but a 2008 review commission found that “the separate categorization established by the Civil Union Act invites and encourages unequal treatment of same-sex couples and their children.”

Many Gay And Lesbian Cadets Still Uncomfortable About Coming Out

Gay and lesbian cadets and midshipmen in the nation’s service academies are struggling to come out in the aftermath of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, a report by the Huffington Post’s Max Rosenthal finds. While “attitudes among cadets are generally accepting,” and “no formal complaints or reports have been lodged,” some senior enlisted people have reportedly made off-color remarks about gay members, and a formal support group for LGBT cadets does not exist:

One gay midshipman in his senior year, who requested anonymity, said the environment at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., was “better, but it still has a long way to go.” He was reluctant to reveal his sexuality to classmates for fear that subordinates would question his leadership, and he knew of other midshipmen who had come out to mixed receptions.

The lack of more formal support groups at the academies is largely a result of similar concerns, interviewed cadets said. Officials at West Point, the Naval Academy and Air Force said they would be open to requests for support groups, and there are efforts underway at Coast Guard to launch a peer support group. But many gay students may not be prepared for such open recognition.

“The biggest group of resistance has been the gay and lesbian midshipmen,” the senior midshipman said. “We said we’re not ready to do this as a group yet. That’s almost across the board.

Generally, the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been without incident, with the staunchest military supporters of the policy embracing gay and lesbian service members .

Former Anti-Gay Strategist Ken Mehlman Named To ‘Out 100′ | Out Magazine has named Ken Melhman as one of its “Out 100,” an “annual salute to the year’s most inspiring people.” Out credits Mehlman for his role lobbying politicians to pass marriage equality in New York and continuing to fight for marriage equality in other states. Mehlman still supports anti-gay politicians and has not taken steps to atone for the anti-gay campaigns he led as chair of the Republican National Committee during President Bush’s re-election bid in 2004.

Poll: 86 Percent Of Gay Mormons Find Ex-Gay Therapy Harmful Or Unhelpful | Hundreds of gay Mormons, their friends, and their family will meet in Salt Lake City this weekend for a conference on gay issues called “Circling the Wagons.” Utah State University conducted polling on the experience of gay and lesbian Mormons and found some interesting results. Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of the 1,600 responded had tried to change their orientation and 86 percent said that church counseling that sought to end their same-sex attraction was not helpful, somewhat harmful, or severely harmful. The Mormon Church started to offer some acceptance of LGBT people last year, but still provides ex-gay therapy through church counseling.

Jill Biden Speaks Out Against Anti-Gay Bullying: ‘No Child Should Be Subjected To That’

Second Lady Jill Biden spoke out against anti-gay bullying at the Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays’ (PFLAG) national convention this afternoon, and congratulated the organization for “shining a light” on LGBT equality in “places where yours is the only voice of support and acceptance”:

We have all heard painful stories of bullying and harassment. And we have read too many accounts of heartbreaking incidents where kids are driven to take their own lives rather than endure the taunting of their peers. No child should be subjected to that. And no parent should suffer that horrific loss.

We know the devastating price of the failure to confront a hostile school climate where bullying and harassment can be daily occurrences. Together, we all need to stand up and do our part to keep all of our kids safe, and give them the love, support and acceptance they need to learn and grow and fulfill their dreams. [...]

I want to say to each of you here today: thank you for raising your voice and working together to open minds, shift attitudes and support all of our sons and daughters, students and neighbors.
Some of you come from places where yours is the only voice of support and acceptance – but when you speak, people listen. And we need you to keep speaking out, to keep shining a light on this important issue.

Biden highlighted the administration’s accomplishments on behalf of LGBT rights and thanked the group for “your courage and commitment — and for promoting the dignity of your sons and daughters.” Read the full speech here.

Deadbeat Rep. Joe Walsh, Who Owes $100k In Child Support, Receives ‘Pro-Family’ Award From Family Research Council

In July, the press learned that Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), a Tea Party freshman in Congress, owed $117,000 in unpaid child support to his ex-wife. Walsh, despite earning a hefty salary as a member of Congress, has continued to refuse to pay his ex-wife to support his children. Now, it appears, an influential Christian right lobbying group is lending some support to the deadbeat congressman.

The Sun-Times reports that the Family Research Council, a social conservative advocacy nonprofit headed by CNN pundit Tony Perkins, has awarded Walsh a 100 percent rating as a “True Blue” member of Congress. The FRC said it gave the honor to Walsh because of his “unwavering support of the family”:

“We thank Cong. Walsh who has voted consistently to defend faith, family and freedom,” said FRCA President Tony Perkins. “Cong. Walsh and other ‘True Blue Members’ have voted to repeal Obamacare, de-fund Planned Parenthood, end government funding for abortion within the health care law, uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, and continue support for school choice. I applaud their commitment to uphold the institutions of marriage and family.”

“I am proud and honored to be recognized by the Family Research Council as the only member from Illinois with a 100 percent pro-family voting record,” Walsh said in a news release. “Defending American values have always been one of my top priorities, and this reward reaffirms my dedication to that fight.”

Despite their very poor understanding of what the term “pro-family” means — the Family Research Council was recently designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of their virulently anti-gay views — they are disturbingly influential among conservative lawmakers. Their legislative arm’s annual “Values Voters” convention drew such speakers as Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), and former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) this year.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Walsh’s failure to pay child support isn’t even his only failure to look out for the basic needs of his own family. As Marie Diamond noted for ThinkProgress a few months ago, “Walsh also rejected the congressional health insurance plan for his family on principle, much to the chagrin of his current wife, Helene, who had a preexisting condition and needed surgery while the couple was uninsured.”

Recently, a judge rebuked Walsh for failing to even show up to a court hearing about his missed child support payments, telling the Chicago-area lawmaker that he doesn’t deserve special treatment and that he’s “no different than anyone else.”

Ohio GOP Senate Candidate Refuses To Return Or Donate Nazi Reenactor’s Campaign Contribution | After learning that infamous Nazi reenactor Rich Iott donated to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel’s (R) U.S. Senate campaign this year, the National Jewish Democrats Council and others demanded that they return the donation or “donate it to a Holocaust memorial.” Though the Republican Jewish Committee congratulated House Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and other Republicans for spurning any affiliation with Iott last year, Mandel (who is Jewish) is refusing to return Iott’s $1,000 in campaign cash. Mandel’s spokesman dismissed the request as “a manufactured nonissue.”

Santorum Repackages Most Extreme Social Policies To Pander To Iowa Voters

Rick Santorum kicks off a series of speeches on “cultural” and “moral policy” in Iowa today, in what looks like a desperate attempt to stake out the most extreme positions on every social issue he can think of. The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin has this preview of his 16 policy initiatives:

– Calling on Congress to abolish the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals;

– Advocating for a personhood amendment to the Constitution;

– Calling on Congress to reinstitute the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy; and

– Executive orders to reinstitute the Mexico City policy to stop taxpayer funding or promotion of abortion overseas and to repeal Clinton-era Title X family planning regulations.

– He also promises to direct the Department of Health and Human Services to restore the separation of Title X family planning from abortion practices and restore a ban on referrals for abortion.

– Finally, he will pledge to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court.

Well, that about covers it. We’ll keep an eye out as he delivers the first address at Urbandale, Iowa this morning in hopes of hearing more about “the dangers of contraception in this country.

Schlafly: Perry’s Tax Plan ‘Rewards Bad Behavior’ Of Same-Sex Couples | Phyllis Schlafly has lashed out at Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry for the way his 20 percent flat-tax plan eliminates tax advantages for married couples. She argued that giving deductions to unmarried parents with “alternative lifestyles” means “rewarding bad behavior.” Schlafly also condemned Perry for being “fine” with marriage equality in other states: “New York’s same-sex marriage is, indeed, Texas’s business, too, since two same-sex couples have already moved to Texas and are demanding that Texas courts recognize their marriage. This shows why the definition of marriage is a national and not a states-right issue.” (HT: American Independent.)

Millennial Generation 26 Percent More Likely To Support Marriage Than ‘Silent’ Generation | New analysis from the Pew Research Center shows how support for marriage equality is growing among all age groups, but the younger people are, the more likely they are to show support. About 59 percent of millennials favor legalizing same-sex marriage over just 33 percent of Silents. These findings jibe with an August report from the Public Religion Research Institute demonstrating millennials’ strong opinions on LGBT equality. This chart from Pew shows the consistent trending among generational groups as well as the distinct differences between them:

‘Family Values’ School Board Candidate Rants Against ‘Militant Homosexuals’

Mylinda Mason — a candidate for school board in Modesto, California — is accusing “militant homosexuals” of destroying campaign memorabilia in response to her opposition to SB-48, a new law that requires schools to incorporate the contributions of the LGBT community in the curricula. Marson has an openly gay son, but presents herself as a Christian social conservative who supports teaching “family values” in the classroom. Mason condemned “homosexuals” for tearing down her signs on several community Facebook pages, and posted on her own personal page once after her comments were removed:

“Wow…Tough day. The Liberals are going out of their way to attack my positions on the social issues that will largely influence any implementation of mandates as a result of my School Board ‘votes’. My Biblical family values are not up for random change.”

“My signs are being damaged, torn down and stolen all over town by the intolerant left. The threat of a Christian grandmother is more than they can take. I just received the third phone call this morning to let me know about the damage done in the dark of night. Having taken a stand for what is right and true, homosexuals and other liberals want to make me pay a price, if not financially at least emotionally and psychologically. Militant homosexual groups and pro-abortion activists have engaged in this type of behavior for decades, only now attacks are getting even more brazen. MM”

Watch a local news report:

Mason prominently condemns SB-48 on her website, saying, “I believe that it is a moral, educational, and financial travesty to mandate our children be taught to accept a lifestyle that is against the beliefs of the majority of the Parents of Modesto.” “This is an issue that goes against my Christian morality and should addressed at the discretion of the parents, if they deem it necessary. It is also educationally unnecessary to discuss the lifestyle choice of any historical figure.”
