Santorum: Americans Should Suffer | During a town hall meeting in Ottumwa, Iowa Friday afternoon, Rick Santorum argued that Americans receive too many government benefits and ought to “suffer” in the Christian tradition. If “you’re lower income, you can qualify for Medicaid, you can qualify for food stamps, you can qualify for housing assistance,” Santorum complained, before adding, “suffering is part of life and it’s not a bad thing, it is an essential thing in life.” However, almost all states have curtailed their aid programs, just as the economic downturn is expanding the pool of eligible applicants. Labor Secretary Commemorates Transgender Day Of Remembrance

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has issued a statement commemorating this weekend’s International Transgender Day of Remembrance:

SOLIS: What began as an online project in 1999 to memorialize the murder of a transgender person will this year include hundreds of vigils and events throughout the country and around the world. I hope that this year’s commemoration will serve as an opportunity to shine a brighter light on both progress made and the challenges ahead.[...]

I am proud to say that the Department of Labor this year joined other executive branch agencies in updating its policy on equal employment opportunity and its policy on harassing conduct in the workplace to specifically prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity. And I am also proud that transgender individuals serve openly at the U.S. Department of Labor. [...]

On this day of remembrance, as we pause to reflect on the lives that have been lost, we renew our commitment to an America that celebrates and values every person.

The International Transgender Day of Remembrance (#TDOR) began in the late 1990′s to raise awareness about violence against transgender people. In just the first nine months of 2011, 116 individuals have been murdered worldwide just because they are transgender, and this is likely a low estimate due to under-reporting. That number is also already outdated, as another trans woman was murdered just last night in Hollywood.

Solis has been an outspoken advocate for LGBT equality. In April, the Department of Labor extended nondiscrimination protections based on gender identity, and last year, Solis and her department recorded an “It Gets Better” video:

Who Is Bob Vander Plaats And Why Does It Matter?

Earlier this year, we introduced you to the FAMiLY LEADER, the extreme anti-gay group in Iowa, and its leader, Bob Vander Plaats. Tomorrow, Vander Plaats is hosting a “Thanksgiving Family Forum” for presidential candidates.  If history is any guide, this event promises to be a veritable cornucopia of attacks on gays and women’s health care and a celebration of fringe social views.

Here’s a rundown of that history, just to remind you who and what Republicans presidential candidates choose to associate themselves with — something that definitely matters.

Vander Plaats — The Lowlights

  • Vander Plaats said gays are a “public health risk” akin to smoking:
  • Vander Plaats repeatedly suggested President Obama was born in Kenya and praised Donald Trump’s birther investigation:
  • Vander Plaats erupted in laughter at a “faggot” joke, saying “that’s pretty good”:
  • Vander Plaats’ political career has been marked by failure:
    • 2002: ran for the GOP gubernatorial nomination and lost.
    • 2006: ran for the GOP gubernational nomination again, dropped out during the primary, joined the GOP ticket as Jim Nussle’s running mate, and promptly lost again.
    • 2010: ran for the GOP gubernational nomination again and lost, again.

This local TV news report from Des Moines last night outlines most of the recent controversies facing Vander Plaats and his organization — and why his influence is on the wane. Check it out:

Lieberman And Collins Reintroduce Domestic Benefits Bill For Federal Employees | Today, Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2011, a bill that would provide Federal benefits to same sex domestic partners of Federal employees. Under the measure, same-sex domestic partners of federal employees living together in a committed relationship “would be eligible for health benefits, long-term care, Family and Medical Leave, and federal retirement benefits, among others.” The Act would help the more than 30,000 employees with same-sex partners, allow the Federal government to compete with the many private companies that already offer benefits, and increase costs by “only 0.4 percent of total health care expenditures, a tiny fraction that is consistent with the experience of thousands of private employers,” one study found.

HHS Website Helps Small Businesses Support Gay Employees

The Department of Health & Human Services has expanded its health insurance database to allow small business owners to locate plans that include same-sex partner coverage. Though employers may utilize the such plans, the Defense of Marriage Act still requires same-sex benefits to be unduly taxed, a burden the employer can choose to offset or leave to employees to cover.

Among the other searchable features of the new healthcare.gov is the ability to search by zip code, out-of-pocket limits, mental health coverage, and maternity coverage through over 2,700 coverage plans from 530 insurers.

Skin In The Game: Super Committee Cuts Could Lead To Worse Health For Gay And Transgender Americans

The ongoing budget and deficit reduction negotiations carry far-reaching consequences for every American. But further capping or cutting funding for vital health programs such as Medicare, community health centers, and Medicaid place communities that already face disparities in health and access to health care, including gay and transgender Americans, under even greater threat.

Heavy cuts to health care entitlement programs and health programs funded by nondefense discretionary spending would put these communities at serious risk of losing assistance essential to their well-being. Many gay and transgender people, like other Americans, rely on entitlement programs such as Medicare and stand to benefit substantially from the expansion of Medicaid and other promising provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Most importantly, further cuts to discretionary spending threaten to undermine the national health infrastructure that protects the health of all Americans and that is critical to closing the disparities that affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population.

Programs and initiatives at risk include:

Data collection by HHS on sexual orientation and gender identity that would allow gay and transgender disparities to be identified and effectively targeted

– Biomedical and behavioral research on HIV prevention and treatment at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health

– Primary, preventive, and other direct health care services through community health centers, which will serve an estimated 40 million Americans by 2015, including many gay and transgender people and their families

– Mental health services that help gay and transgender youth and adults cope with depression and other consequences of bullying and discrimination

– Substance abuse prevention and treatment programs, including tobacco cessation programs that work to reduce high rates of smoking among LGBT people

– Programs that support out-of-home gay and transgender youth, who comprise up to 40 percent of the homeless youth population in the United States

– Efforts by the Office of Minority Health to address the staggering disparities that affect gay and transgender communities of color

Though the funding for these programs may be discretionary, the programs themselves should not be.

The Center for American Progress recommends that cuts to both nondefense discretionary spending and entitlement programs be minimal and balanced by the kinds of revenue increases that will truly help eliminate the deficit and responsibly balance the budget. The committee must resist the urge to take a cuts-only approach without raising any significant additional revenue. Otherwise, it threatens to sacrifice our nation’s future health for short-term political gain.

Eric Stonestreet: ‘Modern Family’ Is Showing America ‘You Don’t Have To Be A Man And A Woman To Give A Child A Home’ | Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet — who plays one half of the gay couple Cam and Mitchell — told the ladies of The View this morning that he receives overwhelmingly positive feedback for the way the gay relationship is portrayed on the show. “Slowly but surely, I think Modern Family — and Cam and Mitch specifically — are having some impact on showing people that you don’t have to be a man and a woman to give a child a beautiful, wonderful, loving home,” he said. Stonestreet also thanked the hosts for allowing him to come out as straight and meet his girlfriend. Watch it:

Mormon Church Steps Up PR Campaign To Change Image | The Mormon Church — one of the primary backers of California’s anti-gay Proposition 8 amendment — is bank rolling a new public relations campaign designed to overcome “what it calls its ‘perception problem,’” the New York Times’ Laurie Goodstein reports. The multimillion-dollar television, billboard and Internet campaign began last year and was recently extended to 21 media markets. It relies on the tagline “I’m a Mormon” to suggest that the religion is inclusive — beyond its white, clean cut image — and “features the personal stories of members who defy stereotyping, including a Hawaiian longboard surfing champion, a fashion designer and single father in New York City and a Haitian-American woman who is mayor of a small Utah city.” The Mormon Church started to offer some acceptance of LGBT people last year, but still provides ex-gay therapy through church counseling. According to a recent Utah State University poll, nearly two-thirds of gay Mormons had tried to change their orientation, and 86 percent said church counseling that sought to end their same-sex attraction was not helpful, somewhat harmful, or severely harmful.

Anti-Gay Iowa Leader Who Benefited From Gingrich’s Donations Forgives Speaker For Marriage Infidelities

Last July, Iowa’s FAMiLY Leader unveiled “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMILY,” a 14 bullet pledge presidential candidates will have to sign to secure any “future endorsement” from the organization and its influential leader, Bob Vander Plaats. The document asked candidates to vow “personal fidelity to my spouse,” claimed that same-sex marriage undermines the family, and contained a bizarre reference to slavery.

But during an appearance on MSNBC this morning, Vander Plaats brushed aside suggestions that Newt Gingrich’s multiple marriages and infidelities undermine social conservative beliefs. “He’s going to be transparent, he’s going to be humble, he’s going to come clean, he’s going to show a level of maturity that he’s learned from the situation and is ready to move on,” Vander Plaats told guest host Chris Cillizza, before suggesting that he forgives Gingrich for his marital sins:

VANDER PLAATS: Every candidate’s past is going to matter. But I believe for those of us who are social conservatives, people of faith, we also realize that the cornerstone at the hart of our faith is a thing called forgiveness. We all fall short, but we want to know, is he truly repentful, is he learned, is he ready to move on, is he more mature? And I believe he’s addressed this in a lot of situations and I think he will again on Saturday.

Watch it:

Vander Plaats was one of the first social conservative leaders to accept Gingrich’s apologies as he sought to consolidate Evangelical support in the run up to announcing his 2012 candidacy. The president of Iowa’s FAMiLY Leader assured the Los Angeles Times in March that Gingrich’s outreach has “won over pastors in the state,” adding “we also understand that we all fall short of the standards.”

But Vander Plaats’ “understanding” may have been influenced by more than the former speaker’s “open and transparent” approach. Last year, Gingrich offered his vocal support for Vander Plaats’ successful campaign to oust three of the nine Iowa Supreme Court justices who had unanimously ruled in favor of marriage equality and his associates bankrolled more than one-third of the $850,000 campaign to remove the justices. Gingrich also attended the FAMiLY Leader’s presidential forum on July 11th of this year, where he was asked if he was ready to commit to the group’s marriage pledge. Gingrich indicated that he was “gonna work with Bob and others to work through some things,” but has yet to publicly announce his support for the document.

Vander Plaats stood by his benefactor, telling the press that he was willing to overlook his marriage infidelities, while still insisting that gays and lesbians hurt the institution and “the family.” “This vow and this pledge is not intended to beat any person up, any candidate up for their past,” Vander Plaats said. “It’s about looking forward to the future and embracing the authenticity of one man, one woman marriage and its impact on the family.”

Rep. Nadler: Omission Of LGBT Families In Immigration Policy Is ‘Extremely Frustrating’ | New policy language from Immigration and Customs Enforcement for reviewing deportation proceedings does not include a specific reference to same-sex couples. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has admonished the omission in the new language, calling it “extremely frustrating that families of LGBT binational couples remain at risk” of being “wrongfully divided.” The working group tasked with a case-by-case review of deportation cases includes an LGBT liaison. Administration officials claim the language is inclusive because deportation cases in which an “immediate family member” is a U.S. citizen — including a same-sex partner or spouse — would be considered low priority. The Williams Institute estimates there are about 28,500 same-sex binational couples living in the U.S.

Christian Author Opposes Marriage Equality Because It Doesn’t Bring ‘Complimentary Genders Together’ | Timothy Keller, a Presbyterian pastor and author of The Meaning of Marriage, appeared on Morning Joe today and argued that marriage should only be between a man and a woman “because what you’re doing is bringing the complementary genders together.” Keller added that same-sex marriage is not compatible with the “traditional” view of Christian marriage, which believes that “the genders both bring something to the table that completes the other gender.” “Basically, the Christian view of marriage goes beyond what the modern view is right now, which is, really, just simply, I just want to be fulfilled,” he said.
