Newt Gingrich Tells Gay Iowan To Vote For Obama

Scott Arnold (photo courtesy Des Moines Register)

Scott Arnold is an associate professor of writing at William Penn University. He is also gay. And today, he approached Newt Gingrich at an event in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he asked the former Speaker whether he’s earned the support of gay Americans. The Des Moines Register’s Jason Clayworth reports:

“I asked him if he’s elected, how does he plan to engage gay Americans. How are we to support him? And he told me to support Obama,” said Arnold. […]

“When you ask somebody a question and you expect them to support all Americans and have everyone’s general interest,” Arnold said. “It’s a little bit frustrating and disheartening when you’re told to support the other side. That he doesn’t need your support.”

Similarly, in an appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show earlier this month, Newt Gingrich’s half-sister Candice Gingrich-Jones, a lesbian and advocate for marriage equality, said she would “work really, really hard to make sure that President Obama is re-elected next year no matter who the Republican candidate is.” “He is definitely on the wrong side of history when it comes to those issues,” Gingrich-Jones said of Newt.

Update

Here’s video of the exchange:

Update

Fox reports a transcript of the exchange:

Gingrich: “I think those for whom the only issue that really matters is the definition of marriage, I won’t get their support. I accept that as reality. On the other hand, for those to whom it’s not the central issue in their life, if they care about job creation, if they care about national security, if they care about a better future for the country at large, then I think I’ll get their support.”

Q: So what if it is the biggest issue?

Gingrich: Then I won’t get their support.

Q: How do we engage if you’re elected. Then what, what does that mean?

Gingrich: Well then you engage in every topic except that.

Q: Except it’s most important (some crosstalk).

Gingrich: Well, if that’s most important to you then you should be for Obama.

Q: I am, thank you (The two men shake hands).

Gingrich: It’s perfectly legitimate. I think it’s perfectly legitimate.

GOP Opponent: Sen. Cantwell Took ‘Extreme’ Position Because She’s Not Married

State Sen. Michael Baumgartner (R-WA)

After the Obama administration’s decision to restrict Plan B emergency contraception, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) joined 13 other senators in a letter expressing their “disappointment” with the ruling on “behalf of millions of women we represent.” Cantwell’s Republican opponent, state Sen. Michael Baumgartner, however, took this letter as an opportunity to blast Cantwell in a “CAN’TWELL WATCH” email to supporters last week for her “extreme” position.

In it, he also decided to casually imply that, because Cantwell is not married, she frequently votes to “undermine the role of parents in child rearing,” the Seattle Times reports:

[S]en. Maria Cantwell’s Republican challenger criticized her support for making Plan B emergency contraceptives widely available to younger teen girls, noting that Cantwell is unmarried and saying she has frequently voted to “undermine the role of parents in child rearing.”

In an email to supporters Thursday, State Sen. Michale Baumgartner, a Spokane freshman, said Cantwell’s position on the so-called “morning after pill” shows her to be an extreme liberal who is left of most Washington voters.

“Cantwell is so extreme that she doesn’t see anything wrong with 11 year-old girls getting Plan B without a prescription,” Baumgartner wrote.

Baumgartner, who has a 6-year-old son, said “he mentioned Cantwell’s marital status to contrast her position with Obama’s,” whom he noted has two daughters. Baumgartner told the Huffington Post that the mention of Cantwell’s marital status didn’t mean she was “unqualified to have an opinion on Plan B.” “She’s certainly qualified to talk about this issue and I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. I just agree with the President and [Health and Human Services] Secretary [Kathleen Sebelius] on this one.”

Cantwell’s campaign replied that “the Plan B decision should be based on the best available science. Washington voters support protecting women’s health. You don’t need to be married to know that Baumgartner’s anti-choice position is out of touch.”

Zimbabwean Legislator Arrested For Calling President Mugabe Gay | Zimbabwean Member of Parliament Lillian Kirenyi is currently under arrest without bail for suggesting that President Robert Mugabe is gay. The government has said that Kirenyi faces “a serious offense” and could encounter retribution from Mugabe supporters if she were released from prison. Mugabe has said gays should be punished in accordance with “African and Christian values” and called British Prime Minister David Cameron “satanic” for trying to promote LGBT equality. The Five Best Manly Men On Television

There’s been a lot of discussion prompted by Good Men Project founder Tom Matlack’s recent essay, in which he suggests that women want men to be more like them, and that manliness is a good thing. I’ll leave Amanda Marcotte to take on some of the larger assumptions in this piece (and to mount a defense as Matlack appears to denounce feminists and insist attacks on him are unfair because he’s a simple oral historian, or something), because I want to address this one: “So are dudes as a gender really assholes? If you look around in the press, on TV, and in popular culture you certainly might conclude that.” I’ve written in the past about some of the best shows about masculinity on television. Sure, it’s true — there are men who behave badly on television, but a lot of women who do same. But I also think that there are a lot of great manly male characters in pop culture right now. Among them:

1. With a bullet. Or with U.S. Army issued mustache trimmers. Parks and Recreation‘s Ron Swanson: Ron Swanson eats steak, drinks whiskey, smokes cigars, venerates John Wayne, reads Patrick O’Brian, hunts, camps, lays wreathes, lights torches, and teaches fourth-graders the importance of libertarianism. He also mentors women, loves mini-horses, shows up with hangover cures, self-sacrifices for the greater good, and dances with a fascinator on when he’s drunk. And he makes the point that none of these things are remotely inconsistent.

2. Because sometimes mentoring means you call the CIA on your mentee. And sometimes it means you show up with chicken soup. Homeland‘s Saul Berenson: Dude has one of the most serious beards on television. He blackmails the vice president of the United States in the name of justice. He talks around homegrown terrorists into giving up critically useful information. He responds to improper advances from his desperate mentee in an entirely proper fashion. He tries to woo back his estranged wife when she announces she’s leaving him to his workaholic tendencies, but ultimately respects her decision to go. Saul’s personal and professional courage are admirable. I’m going to be really sad if he turns out to be a mole.

3. Because sometimes being a good father means letting your daughter get mentored by Oprah. Up All Night‘s Kevin: Jason Lee’s had a bit of a wacky streak these past couple of years, but it’s turns out he’s exactly what this freshman comedy needed. As a contractor, he’s a nice counterbalance to the glitzy world new girlfriend Ava spends most of her time in without being an exploitable working-class fling. He spends Christmas with his ex-wife to create a smooth transition for his daughter. And he trusts and respects that Ava will find her way to a relationship with his daughter—and in expecting her to behave like a normal human, or as close as she’s capable of getting, helps her level up.

4. Cable executive. Tuxedo-wearer. Single father. 30 Rock‘s Jack Donaghy: Now, let’s be clear. Jack Donaghy has his flaws: a pathological hatred for his (admittedly dotty) mother, a disturbing level of comfort with turning children permanently orange, and a willingness to fake Dominican birth certificates to bolster Tracy Jordan’s struggling baseball team. But he loves smart women, whether he’s marrying first wife Bianca or talented cable-talker Avery Jessup or mentoring Liz Lemon; he’ll do anything for his father, include arranging a one-beneficiary all-star charity concert; and even if baby Libby is Canadian, you know that man will take all the care of her in the world.

5. The mismatched socks. The mad marksmanship skills. The naked omelet-making. Bones‘ Seeley Booth: I know Bones drives a lot of you crazy. But in the post-Bush years, and in this particular moment after Christopher Hitchens’ death, there’s something really valuable about throwing down a marker and declaring that while it may be manly to be able to use force, it’s morally correct to abhor killing even if you’re good at it. And even though David Boreanaz makes it look effortless, the character of Booth is all about the fact that manhood — whether in the form of resisting addiction, caring for a wayward brother, respecting and loving a strong but difficult woman, and holding on to your faith — is hard work. But it’s worth doing.

Yale And Columbia Will Reimburse Gay Employees’ Tax Burden | Yale and Columbia Universities will soon join Bowdoin College, Syracuse University, and many businesses in compensating their gay employees for the extra tax they have to pay on the benefits for their same-sex partners. Because the Defense of Marriage Act does not recognize same-sex couples, benefits for employees’ partners are viewed as taxable income, thus increasing gay people’s tax bills. By covering the differences, these schools take on a financial burden to eliminate the inequity the government imposes.

Republicans Trust Romney Most On Social Issues | A new Washington Post/ABC poll has found that voters who lean Republican trust Mitt Romney more on “social issues, such as abortion and gay marriage,” than any other candidate. Twenty-six percent thought Romney was the most trustworthy on those issues, followed by Newt Gingrich (15 percent), Michele Bachmann (13 percent), and Ron Paul (12 percent). Though Iowa’s Bob Vander Plaats endorsed Rick Santorum today as “a stalwart and a soldier for the sanctity of human life and God’s design for the family,” only 4 percent of respondents found that he was the most trustworthy on social issues. Massachusetts Newspaper Mocks Transgender People: ‘If They Want, They Can Change It Back’

A Massachusetts newspaper is catching heat for mocking transgender celebrity Chaz Bono and a new state law prohibiting discrimination against gender identity. In its Dec. 19 edition, “The Lowell Sun ran the following lyrics, meant to be sung to the tune of ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’ as part of an article titled ‘Christmas carols — with a twist,’ written by columnist and copy editor Dan Phelps:”

Chaz Bono got turned into a man, dear.
Dancin’ with a woman on TV.
You might say there’s no such thing as Santa
Till you see what Chaz got ‘neath his tree. [...]

Now transgenders in the Bay State
Have a law that’s etched in black.
It says they can change their gender.
Then if they want, they can change it back.

Interestingly, the last line echoes the actual comments of Massachusetts Rep. Sheila Harrington (R), who asked two transgender witnesses if transgender people are able to change their genders on a “day-to-day basis” when the Judiciary Committee considered the legislation in June. The Human Rights Campaign has condemned the lyrics, saying, “It is unacceptable for transgender Americans, and the very real challenges they face, to become comedic punch lines –- and we have an obligation to speak out against such dangerous stereotypes.”

Caribbean Newspapers Publish Ad Promoting Ex-Gay Therapy | A full-page ad promoting ex-gay therapy has appeared in the leading Trinidad newspaper Sunday Express, titled “What You Should Know About Homosexuality.” A similar advertisement was also recently published in a Jamaican newspaper, LGBTQ Nation reports. As one equality activist put it, “They looked at this…and thought it was okay to publish? Not that something is wrong with publishing a religiously slanted ad, but one that openly discredits a community, questions their movement towards rights and even, in a sense, undermines their actual existence is definitely a problem.” The ad:

Anti-Gay Marriage Leaders Endorse Rick Santorum

The FAMiLY Leader’s Bob Vander Plaats and Chuck Hurley of the Iowa Family Policy Center have endorsed conservative values stalwart Rick Santorum for president, who, despite a strong record of opposing abortion rights and marriage equality, has failed to gain any significant traction in the state. Santorum is also the only GOP presidential candidate to campaign in all 99 of Iowa’s counties and has participated in over 350 town halls. The Leader’s board has agreed to remain neutral in the caucuses.

Vander Plaats and his group have sought to position themselves as kingmakers of the Iowa caucuses, hosting a presidential speakers forum earlier this year, and asking candidates to sign a 14-point marriage fidelity pledge vowing to oppose same-sex marriage. During today’s announcement Vander Plaats downplayed the influence of his personal endorsement, saying that the endorsement may have limited value, given the proximity of the Jan. 3 caucuses:

VANDER PLAATS: He has been a stalwart and a soldier for the sanctity of human life and God’s design for the family, one man-one woman marriage…. So today, I as an individual am going to endorse Rick Santorum. I’m going to mobilize whatever resources I have at my disposal to advocate for him. I will not tear down another candidate….I believe Rick Santorum comes from us. He comes from us, not just to us. He’s one of us….I also recognize that we’re down to fourteen days minus Christmas.

Watch it:

A Gallup poll released several weeks ago found that Santorum — a candidate who has camped out in Iowa and delivered every bigoted anti-gay argument imaginable — is the least acceptable nominee for president from the Republican Party — according to Republicans. Just 27 percent of GOP voters said Santorum could represent the party in 2012; 62 percent said he was “not acceptable.”

The FAMiLY Leader has its own long history of anti-gay and anti-Muslim rhetoric. An early version of the group’s fidelity pledge suggested that children were better off under slavery than they are under Obama, and the document likens homosexuality to polygamy, adultery, or polyandry, attacks gays as a public health risk, and foments the non-existent “Sharia” threat to America. Vander Plaats himself led a successful campaign to oust three state Supreme Court justicies who overturned Iowa’s anti-gay marriage law and played in instrumental part and leading Mike Huckabee to victory in Iowa in 2008.

Update

Politico’s Reid Epstein reports that “Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats called Michele Bachmann and urged her to drop out of the race and endorse Rick Santorum, a source with knowledge of the conversation told POLITICO Tuesday…Bachmann declined, the source said, noting to Vander Plaats that she has consistently polled ahead of Santorum in the race and still does.

New Hampshire Equality Opponents ‘Trash’ Gay Families | Conservatives working to overturn New Hampshire’s marriage equality law have published some particularly nasty banners on their new webpage, juxtaposing a heterosexual family with frivolous pictures from pride parades. The clear message is that only straight people have families, while the gay community is constantly out to “trash your values.” These banners prove, once again, that conservatives are not just pursuing personal beliefs but seeking opportunities to smear and defame all of the LGBT community as disordered perverts:

Denver Broncos Won’t Film Anti-Bullying Ad | The Denver Broncos have “responded to an online campaign urging the team to make a video for the It Gets Better project, indicating that they won’t be jumping on the anti-bullying project anytime soon,” the Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel reports. “The Denver Broncos are committed to tolerance, acceptance and respect for all in the community,” a spokesman said in a statement. “The National Football League is currently working with USA Network on its ‘Characters Unite’ campaign combating prejudice and intolerance, and our organization is in full support of that movement to help raise awareness for this very important cause.” The team did not comment on It Gets Better. Equality activists targeted the Broncos after quarterback Tim Tebow “starred in an ad for the right-wing group Focus on the Family, which opposes LGBT rights.”

Newt Gingrich Secures Endorsement Of Anti-Gay ‘Family’ Group He Helped Fund

Thrice-married Newt Gingrich has secured the endorsement of Don Wildmon, the founder of the vehemently anti-gay American Family Association, the Hill reports. “Newt Gingrich recognizes the threat to our country posed by judges and lawyers imposing values upon the country inconsistent with our religious heritage, and has proposed constitutional steps to bring the courts back in balance under the constitution,” Wildmon said in a statement. “We need someone in the White House who can balance the budget and get the economy moving again. Newt has done it before and I believe he can do it again. I am proud to endorse Newt Gingrich for president.”

One of the cogs in Gingrich’s vast network of business enterprises and front groups, ReAL Action, has provided $125,000 to the AFA’s sister organization, American Family Association Action. The group’s outspoken policy directory Bryan Fischer has “proposed criminalizing homosexual behavior” and has even advocated forcing gays into “reparative” therapy.

When ThinkProgress confronted Gingrich over his association with the group, the former speaker defended Fischer, saying, “You bring a series of allegations that I can’t check about a group that is largely a Christian based membership group, that is fairly widespread in its membership and I suspect most of those people do not in any way think of themselves as a hate group even if that’s how you would characterize them. Watch it:

During an appearance on Fisher’s show, Gingrich also promised to “slow down the homosexual agenda” if he were elected president and told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly in 2008 that “there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us is prepared to use violence, to use harassment.” Gingrich has recently described same-sex marriage as “a temporary aberration that will dissipate.” “I think that it is just fundamentally goes against everything we know,” he claimed in September.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled AFA a hate group — and for good reason. Aside from its animus towards gay people, “In late 2009, Fischer suggested that all Muslims should be banned from joining the U.S. military” and has repeatedly called “for a ban on immigration by Muslims and for local communities to ban the construction of mosques.” But according to Gingrich, this kind of sentiment should not reflect poorly on “a Christian based membership group.”

Update

Right Wing Watch notes that some members of AFA, including Fischer, have harshly criticized Gingrich for his marital indiscretions.
