Christie: ‘My Friends… Know I’m Not Bigoted’ | In an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan recorded last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) explained his intention to veto marriage equality, saying he won’t “compromise my principles for politics.” He also dismissed any accusations that his “core belief” denying gay and lesbian couples the right to marry makes him a bigot, saying that even his supposed gay friends “know I’m not bigoted.” Watch it:

UK Study Examines Unique Challenges For Bisexual Community

A new report out of Britain’s Open University last week looks at the unique challenges facing the bisexual community and the compounding impact of homophobia and biphobia. A meta-analysis of various studies found that bisexual people face a higher risk of mental health problems — such as depression, anxiety, self harm, and suicidal thinking — than even gays and lesbians. This is because people who are bi face distinct forms of stereotypes and exclusion that come from both the straight and gay communities. Here are a selection of some of the recommendations the study makes for combating biphobia:

  • Separate biphobia out from homophobia, recognising that there are specific issues facing bisexual people such as lack of acknowledgement of their existence, stereotypes of greediness or promiscuity, and pressure to be either gay or straight.
  • Recognise the role that biphobia and bisexual invisibility play in creating negative outcomes for bisexual people.
  • Recognise that bisexual people are also subject to homophobia, heterosexism and heteronormativity.
  • Tackle biphobic hate crime by separating out the experiences of bisexual people in national surveys, examining bisexual-specific experiences, and particularly addressing sexual assault.
  • Specifically target bisexual youth in sexual health campaigns, rather than subsuming them in lesbian and gay categories. Any restrictions relating to sexual health, such as the donation of blood, should be around safety of sexual practices engaged in rather than the genders or sexual identities of those involved.

The full report is worth a read, as it includes the testimony of many bisexual people and a helpful discussion for understanding the identity’s many possible variations. Given researchers are still wasting time on whether bisexuality even exists — it does — further examination for the unique experiences of bi people can further an understanding of all people’s sexualities and the way society treats them. Santorum: The Democratic Party Is About ‘Homosexuality’

During a 2008 “Press & People of Faith in Politics” forum, Rick Santorum described to the Democratic Party as “the party of Woodstock,” and accused lawmakers of “prey[ing] upon our most basic primal lusts.” Asked to name a couple of words he’d heard attached to religion and politics in his years in the Senate, Santorum listed “moderate,” “ultra-conservative,” “liberal,” and “zealous” before launching into a full-on tirade against Democrats:

“Woodstock is the great American orgy. This is who the Democratic Party has become. They have become the party of Woodstock. The prey upon our most basic primal lusts, and that’s sex. And the whole abortion culture, it’s not about life. It’s about sexual freedom. That’s what it’s about. Homosexuality. It’s about sexual freedom.”

Of course Santorum will position Republicans as the “anti-homosexuality” party if he wins the nomination and has pledged to to annul all same-sex marriages and personally campaign in every state against marriage equality.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Responds To ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill On ‘The View’ | Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson joined the ladies of The View today to discuss Tennessee’s proposed “Don’t Say Gay” bill, as well as comments by state Rep. Joey Hensley (R) that parents should not let their kids watch Modern Family because they might learn that gay people exist. Ferguson called the legislation “ridiculous,” pointing out, “If we just don’t say things, it’s not like they don’t exist,” and that such rules stigmatize gay youth. The ladies also had a variety of perspectives to share. Watch it:

Colorado Catholic Charities Threaten To Shut Down If Gays Allowed To Enter Into Civil Unions

During last week’s hearing before the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee, a spokesperson from Catholic Charities testified that if the state legally recognized same-sex civil unions, the organization would halt all adoption and foster care services in the state, as they have in states like Illinois. Senators Pat Steadman (D) and Ellen Roberts (R) pointed out that — unlike in other states’ laws — the proposed bill clearly says that adoption agencies will not be required to place children with gay and lesbian couples, but Catholic Charities threatened to end its services nontheless:

CATHOLIC CHARITIES: We would not be able to adopt to same-sex couples.

STEADMAN: And the bill doesn’t ask you to.

ROBERTS: I just have one clarification as to whether you think the bill would prohibit those services or if you think, under a state of law, you would choose not to provide those services?

CATHOLIC CHARITIES: Under the state of law, Catholic Charities would have to discontinue our service in adoption and foster care. We would discontinue our service.

After some further discussion, Steadman summed up Catholic Charities’ “disappointing position” as, “If we have to serve everyone, we’ll choose to serve no one.” Watch the testimony and discussion:

One Colorado has started a petition encouraging Colorado legislators to “stay strong against these shocking scare tactics and threats.”

Romney Sought To Win Over Maggie Gallagher’s Endorsement | Mitt Romney’s campaign tried — and failed — to cultivate the support of ardent anti-gay leader Maggie Gallagher, the New York Times reported on Saturday, after the same-sex marriage opponent hinted of her support for Rick Santorum. An hour after hearing about Gallagher’s pending endorsement, Romney aide Peter G. Flaherty “invited her to send over a copy of her forthcoming book, for which Mr. Romney, it suggested, might provide a flattering blurb. “It was,” Ms. Gallagher recalled, “extremely unusual and gracious,” although she ultimately backed the former Pennsylvania senator. In his outreach to conservative opinion makers, Flaherty is promising that “Romney would select a running mate who shared his conservative views on social issues,” a pledge Romney himself reiterated during a town hal in Michigan Tuesday afternoon.

Franklin Graham: Obama May Secretly Be A Muslim, Santorum And Gingrich Are Definitely Christian

Rev. Franklin Graham — son of Billy Graham — would not say if President Obama is a Christian during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday, insisting that “I cannot answer that question for anybody.” Franklin claimed that the President began attending Church to bolster his political career and is a Muslim under Islamic law. “Islam sees him as a son of Islam because his father was a Muslim, his grandfather was a Muslim, great grandfather was a Mulsim and so under Islamic law, the Muslim world sees Barack Obama as a Muslim,” Graham said, before explaining that he could not rule out the possibility that Obama may secretly be Muslim. “I can’t say categorically [that Obama is not a Muslim] because Islam has gotten a free pass under Obama,” he said.

The visibly shocked Morning Joe crew pressed Graham further and discovered that he was far more willing to accept the other presidential candidates’ personal testaments. Graham agreed that Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich were both Christians, while raising some concerns about Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith:

WILLIE GEIST (co-host, Morning Joe): Do you believe that Rick Santorum is Christian?

GRAHAM: I think so.

GEIST: Why is it different for Rick Santorum?

GRAHAM: Well, because his values are so clear on moral issues….

JOHN HEILEMANN (New York Magazine): That’s an amazing double standard. Your reaction to the difference. The question about Rick Santorum and President Obama, I think, just exposes an incredible double standard you’re applying to the two people. They’re exactly the same situation.

ALEX WAGNER (host, NOW): Reverend, what about Mitt Romney…is he a Christian?

GRAHAM: He’s a Mormon… most Christians would not recognize Mormons as part of the Christian faith. [...]

GRAHAM: Any one of these candidates. Newt Gingrich. Now, Newt has been married several times, so he’s had those issues — but he can make a good candidate. And I think that Newt is a Christian, at least he told me he is.

Watch a compilation:

“Under President Obama, the Muslims of the world — he seems more concerned about them than the Christians being murdered in the Muslim countries,” Graham concluded. He also praised former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak for protecting the rights of Christian people.

Despite Graham’s claims, Obama has repeatedly called on the Egyptian government to protect the rights of religious minorities in the aftermath of Mubarak’s fall from power and even issued a special statement, saying, “freedom of religion, the protection of people of all faiths, and the ability to worship as you choose are critical to a peaceful, inclusive and thriving society.” “And for this season of change to succeed, Coptic Christians must have the right to worship freely in Cairo, just as Shia must never have their mosques destroyed in Bahrain,” Obama said.

Graham had previously questioned whether Obama was born in the United States.

Maryland Senate Committee Advances Marriage Equality | Today the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee advanced marriage equality legislation with a vote of 7-4. Though last week’s House vote was a squeaker, the bill is expected to sail smoothly through the Senate this week, which also passed it last year. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) has promised to sign the bill, but it will likely have to survive a referendum before it becomes law.

Opponents Of Marriage Equality To Ask Ninth Circuit To Rehear Prop. 8 Case, En Banc | The supporters of California’s anti-marriage equality Proposition 8 will ask the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider, en banc, the 2-1 ruling that the 2008 ballot initiative violated the U.S. constitution, SCOTUSblog reports. If the court grants the request, it would slow down the case’s projected path to the U.S. Supreme Court. Unlike most U.S. appeals courts, en banc hearings in the Ninth Circuit consist of a panel of 11 randomly selected judges from across the circuit.

Maryland’s Arora Mum On ‘No’ Vote As Aide Resigns In Protest | When the Maryland House held its contentious vote on marriage equality last week, Del. Sam Arora (D) again voted against the bill, offering no explanation as to why he continues to betray his campaign pledge to support same-sex marriage. But Arora is already facing the fallout: his legislative director, Joshua Lapidus, has resigned in protest, saying he could not respect Arora’s decision to stand “against the tide of history” and place “personal religious belief over the roles and responsibilities” of his position. Meanwhile, Maryland Juice reports that Arora was allegedly “walking around all cocky” in his meeting with the Catholic Conference, but he has yet to make a statement to the public about a vote that could cost him his career.

NJ Senate President: Christie Is 1000% Wrong For Opposing Marriage Equality

New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney (D) said that Gov. Chris Christie (R) was “1000 percent wrong” in vetoing legislation expanding marriage to gay and lesbian couples on Friday and vowed to keep the question off of the ballot. “We got elected to make decisions. When the governor cut funding for sexually abused children, that didn’t go on the ballot. When he cut funding for visually impaired children, that didn’t go on the ballot. We get elected to make decisions and this is a decision we have to make,” Sweeney explained during an appearance on CNN this Sunday.

He also predicted that if Republicans could “vote their conscience,” the legislature would have the votes to override Christie’s veto. Last week, the Assembly passed marriage equality in a vote of 42-33, falling 12 votes shy of a two-thirds majority. The Senate was three votes short in its vote. The legislature has until 2014 to build a majority for same-sex marriage. Watch Sweeney’s remarks:

Recently Outed Conservative Sheriff Supports Marriage Equality

Conservative Arizona sheriff Paul Babeu has gained a lot of prominence as a proponent of the state’s anti-immigration policy, a staunch supporter of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a Congressional candidate, and the volunteer co-chair of Mitt Romney’s Arizona campaign, but he now finds himself mired in a scandal with a jilted lover. In a case of he-said-he-said, his former partner Jose Orozco alleges that Babeu threatened to deport him if he revealed their relationship, though it seems Orozco has legal status in the U.S. Babeu, in turn, alleges that Orozco had refused to turn over passwords he had access to as a volunteer — or possibly had hacked — for Babeu’s campaign.

As a result of the scandal, Babeu has publicly come out as a gay man and resigned from his position with Romney’s campaign. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, he admitted his support for marriage equality, saying he believes “we’re evolving as a country and a nation”:

BABEU: I can tell you my personal beliefs and my political beliefs is [sic]: I believe in freedom of religion. And there are faiths and religions that our government shouldn’t get involved in that absolutely do not condone gay marriage. The government shouldn’t tell those faiths and those religions that they have to.  At the same time, I don’t believe they should tell other faiths that they can’t.  And this is where our government needs to get the heck out of the way.  And if it’s not harming someone else, then what does it matter?  And you can’t legislate love.

Indiana Lawmaker Accuses Girl Scouts Of Pushing ‘Pro-Abortion’ Agenda, ‘Homosexual Lifestyles’

A Republican lawmaker in Indiana was the only state House member to “refuse to sign a resolution honoring the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts that lawmakers approved last week,” claiming that the “radicalized organization” supports abortions and the homosexual agenda. In a letter obtained by The Journal-Gazette of Fort Wayne on Monday, Rep. Bob Morris (R) informed colleagues that “he did some research on the Internet and found allegations that the Girl Scouts are a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood, allow transgender females to join and encourage sex.” From the letter:

I did a small amount of web-based research, and what I found is disturbing. The Girl Scouts of America and their worldwide partner, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), have entered into a close strategic affiliation with Planned Parenthood. [...]

Nonetheless, abundant evidence proves that the agenda of Planned Parenthood includes sexualizing young girls through the Girl Scouts, which is quickly becoming a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood instructional series and pamphlets are part of the core curriculum at GSA training seminars. Denver Auxiliary Bishop James D. Conley of Denver last year warned parents that “membership in the Girl Scouts could carry the danger of making their daughters more receptive to the pro-abortion agenda.”

A Girl Scouts of America training program last year used the Planned Parenthood sex education pamphlet “Happy, Healthy, and Hot.” The pamphlet instructs young girls not to think of sex as “just about vaginal or anal intercourse.” “There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore and be yourself!” it states. Although individual Girl Scout troops are not forced to follow this curriculum, many do. Liberal progressive troop-leaders will indoctrinate the girls in their troop according to the principles of Planned Parenthood, making Bishop Conley’s warning true.

Morris also said the fact that first lady Michelle Obama is honorary president “should give each of us reason to pause before our individual and collective endorsement of the organization” and criticized the group for accepting “Boys who decide to claim a ‘transgender’ or cross-dressing life-style.”

Indiana Republicans are keeping their distance from Morris and his allegations. Rep. Kathy Richardson (R) spoke in support of the resolution last week and told the Journal-Gazette, “I guess he’s entitled to his opinion…They are out selling cookies – not sex and abortions.” House Speaker Brian Bosma (R) said he hasn’t read the letter or “investigated [the Girl Scouts] closely.”
