Colombian Court Protects Gay Couples’ Public Affection | Colombia’s constitutional court has ruled that same-sex couples have the same right to express affection in public as their heterosexual counterparts. The case originated after a gay couple was kicked out of a shopping mall for kissing. The judge described the security guard’s actions as “discrimination that only affected gay couples.” The same court ruled last week that a gay American journalist could adopt two Colombian children.

New Studies Illuminate The Unique Experiences Of Bisexual Men And Women

A collection of new studies published in a special issue of the Journal of Bisexuality examines the unique challenges and experiences of those who have sexual attractions or engage in sexual behavior with both men and women. People who identify as bi experience biphobia from both straight and gay people, forcing them to reconsider the language by which they identify and how they form their social communities. Here are a few examples of the findings from the research:

  • Women who identified as bi or lesbian reported the best health when their sexual identity matched their recent sexual history.
  • The health of women who used the ambiguous label of “queer” was not impacted by their sexual behavior in the same way.
  • The sexual behavior of bi women fits no stereotypical mold — in one study they were almost evenly divided among those who have only male sexual partners, only female sexual partners, some of both, or none at all.
  • Bisexual men struggle to find community and people whom they can discuss their identity with, negatively impacting their mental health.
  • Bisexual men see women sexual partners as “safer,” choosing to use condoms with men to prevent HIV/STI transmission but with women for pregnancy prevention purposes.

Studying the sexual behavior of individuals in the LGBT community is important for health advocacy purposes. If stereotypes are being used to guide funding for LGBT health outreach efforts instead of actual data, that could be incredibly wasteful or ineffective. For example, as researcher Brian Dodge points out, sexual health programs that target gay and bi men focus only on their experiences with male partners, which deprives bi men of important guidance they should have about their full range of behaviors.

Furthermore, these studies illuminate in new and profound ways the impact of biphobia. Earlier this year, Britain’s Open University published a meta-analysis of the research on mental health in the bisexual community and the need to identify it specifically:

Separate biphobia out from homophobia, recognising that there are specific issues facing bisexual people such as lack of acknowledgement of their existence, stereotypes of greediness or promiscuity, and pressure to be either gay or straight… Recognise the role that biphobia and bisexual invisibility play in creating negative outcomes for bisexual people.

But perhaps the most important takeaway is a reminder that labels can help communicate the nature of individuals’ identities, but they can be just as destructive when they create expectations to be fulfilled.

Boy Scouts To Receive 275,000 Signatures Of Support For Lesbian Den Mother | The Boy Scouts of America’s anti-gay policies came back into focus last month when Ohio mom Jen Tyrrell was ousted from her position as her son’s den mother because she is a lesbian. On Wednesday, Zach Wahls and other supporters of Tyrrell will deliver more than 275,000 signatures of support to the Scouts’ annual meeting in Orlando. Wahls, an Eagle Scout, has become a national spokesperson for same-sex families since testifying before the Iowa legislature last year on behalf of his moms’ marriage.

Romney Surrogate Claims Campaign Ignored ‘The Attack On Mrs. Romney’ From Hilary Rosen

Mitt Romney surrogate Frmr. Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) defended the governor’s upcoming fundraiser with birther Donald Trump during an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Tuesday afternoon, insisting that the campaign will use the event to focus on economic issues. Asked if Romney would have criticized President Obama had he appeared alongside a controversial supporter, Talent suggested that it would not and even claimed that Romney avoided weighing in on Hilary Rosen’s claim that Ann Romney “has actually never worked a day in her life“:

MITCHELL: If president Obama were to appear with a prominent fund-raiser who said things as outrageous as what Donald Trump said again today, would you in the Romney campaign let it go?

TALENT: We’d keep focusing on the main subject of the campaign is and we’ve done that. Every time the president trying to get off to something different like the attack of Governor Romney because of his dogs or the attack on Mrs. Romney we keep going back to what’s important… Every time the campaign or something comes up on the other side that does that, we keep going back to the main issues because campaigns shouldn’t be about the horse race. They ought to be about what’s important to the American people and that’s what Governor Romney’s going to stick with.

Watch it:

The facts tell a different story, however. Within an hour of Rosen’s remarks in April, Romney’s wife Ann joined Twitter and personally condemned Rosen. The following day, the campaign deployed a series of surrogates to slam the pundit in conference calls with reporters and press releases, while Ann appeared on Fox News. The campaign and its conservative allies demanded — and won — public condemnations of Rosen from the Obama campaign, the DNC, prominent Democrats, and even President Obama himself. Ann Romney later described Rosen’s remarks as a political “gift,” noting, “It was my early birthday present for someone to be critical of me as a mother, and that was really a defining moment, and I loved it.”

Rosen, unlike Trump, was never part of the Obama campaign, yet the Romney people insisted that Obama apologize for her comments. They’re now taking a different tact with Trump, proving that Romney is willing to embrace supporters who spew lies and misinformation so he can raise money and appeal to the most conspiracy-minded conservatives.

Nation Of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan Attacks Obama For Marriage Equality | The Southern Poverty Law Center designates the Nation of Islam as a hate group for its racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-gay rhetoric, and this weekend its leader Louis Farrakhan proved just how anti-gay it can be. Speaking at a conference in San Diego, Farrakhan attacked President Obama for his support of same-sex marriage and suggested that Newsweek was mocking him for calling him the “first gay President.” He claimed to not be preaching hate, but he relayed the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and proclaimed that “sin is sin according to the standard of God.” Watch it:

Romney Silent On Trump, Demanded Perry ‘Repudiate’ Pastor Who Called Mormonism A Cult

Mitt Romney refused to directly repudiate Donald Trump’s claims that President Obama was born in Kenya just hours before he is scheduled to appear with the reality T.V. star for a fund raiser in Las Vegas, NV. “A candidate can’t be responsible for everything that their supporters say,” Romney spokesperson Eric Fehrnstrom told CNN on Friday, before insisting that the former Massachusetts governor “accepts the fact that [Obama] was born in Hawaii.”

But Romney has previously demanded that his political opponents publicly rebuke supporters who make false accusations about Mormonism. In October, Romney aggressively confronted evangelical pastor and Rick Perry backer Robert Jeffress, who claimed that Romney is not Christian and is part of a Mormon cult. Romney called on Perry to denounce Jeffress:

“Gov. Perry selected an individual to introduce him who then used religion as a basis for which he said he would endorse Gov. Perry and a reason to not support me. Gov. Perry then said that introduction just hit it out of the park,” Romney said.

“I just don’t believe that that kind of divisiveness based upon religion has a place in this country. I believe in the spirit of the founders, when they suggested in crafting this country that we would be a nation that tolerated other people, different faiths — that we’d be a place of religious diversity,” Romney continued.

He concluded, “I would call upon Gov. Perry to repudiate the sentiment and the remarks made by that pastor.”

Ironically, Perry spokesman Mark Miner responded to Romney’s outrage with the same sentiment that Romney is now expressing towards those who have called on him to directly repudiate Trump. “The governor does not agree with every single issue of people that endorsed him or people that he meets,” Miner said. “This political rhetoric from Gov. Romney isn’t going to create one new job or help the economy. He’s playing a game of deflection and the people of this country know this.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) — a Romney surrogate and potential Vice Presidential nominee — also condemned Perry, saying, that any candidate that would associate with such comments “is beneath the office of president of the United States.”

European Parliament Condemns Anti-Gay Laws | Last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning laws that specifically target the gay community, including those proposed or enacted in nations like Russia, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine that “restrict freedom of expression and assembly.” Passed 430-105, the resolution calls on all countries to “demonstrate, and ensure respect for, the principle of non-discrimination.”

Dozens Arrested After Violent Gay Rights Clash In Russia

Gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev was literally carried away by Moscow police after the protest.

Russian gay rights activists held two unsanctioned protests in Moscow on Sunday demanding the right to hold a pride parade, but they faced a violent reaction from members of the Russian Orthodox Church, who threw punches and trampled on rainbow flags. Police said 40 people were arrested, including almost all of the 30 gay rights activists and only a few of the 50 Orthodox counter-protesters. Those speaking out for equality responded to how they were treated by police:

NIKOLAI ALEXEYEV: I am arrested at Moscow Pride City Hall protest just for opening my mouth to talk to a crowd of journalists. I have no words.

IGOR YASIN: All of our rights are being trampled on here in Russia. Your rights aren’t safe and you’re not physically safe.

GALINA KAPTUR: It’s as if they thought that if all left-handed people held a parade, then afterward everyone would become left-handed. This is wrong.

According to Alexeyev’s twitter feed, he and other activists were charged only with holding an unsanctioned public event. Alexeyev, founder of Moscow Pride, was recently the first person arrested under St. Petersburg’s new law against any form of LGBT “propaganda” — his sign simply read “homosexuality is not a perversion.” It’s unclear how those few who were arrested from the Orthodox Church were charged, if at all. Watch this incredible video of the petty violence that took place in front of reporters at the protests:

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner: Tony Perkins | Last week, the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins admitted to CNN’s Brooke Baldwin that, despite how rabidly he attacks same-sex families on a daily basis, he’s never once visited one of their homes. In response, the Family Equality Council’s Jennifer Chrisler invited Perkins to dinner at home with her family. During an interview on Friday, Baldwin informed Chrisler that Perkins had accepted the invitation, saying, “My wife and I will be glad to respond when we receive the invitation to find a time that works.” Watch the segment:

Thousands Protest Anti-Gay Pastor In North Carolina

Photo via Hickory Daily Record

Thousands of protesters gathered this weekend outside of the North Carolina church where Pastor Charles Worley preaches. Worley came under fire last week after saying the U.S. should build an electrified fence to create a concentration camp for all gay people and “in a few years they’ll die out.”

In the past, Worley has also spoken fondly of the days when gay people would be “hung, bless God, from a white oak tree.”

Protesters and counter-protesters from around the country showed up outside of Worley’s church, Providence Road Baptist Church, to either fight or support Worley’s message.

Check out the crowd:

Fox Charlotte has more coverage from the ground in North Carolina.

Churches are not permitted to advocate for political outcomes, and since Worley’s hateful comments were directly aimed at President Obama and Congress, a formal request has been made to the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of his church.

Some activists are taking a less legal route: There were reports of an attempted arson at the church this weekend.
