Catholic Ex-Gays Reach Out With Priest Rap | The Catholic ministry Courage, which demands a lifetime of celibacy from gay people, has released a new spoken word video featuring Father Claude Dusty Burns (“Pontifex”). Through the oddly rapped poem, the priest urges gay Catholics to deny their same-sex attractions and pick a “chosen identity” that the Church can approve of. Here are some of the lyrics: “In a culture that glorifies sex and puts pleasure before all else / Is God the source of your identity or is it your sexual self? / And how do we identify and not accept a lie / Because sexual desire is just one piece of the pie / Identity is a choice a lifestyle is something you embrace / Same sex Attraction doesn’t define you and can be set in place.” Watch the disturbing and harmful video:

Another Equality-Supporting Republican Wins In New York | The National Organization for Marriage has been boasting that it successfully impacted the Republican primaries in New York, challenging several state senators who had voted for marriage equality. It turns out, it was only victorious in one of the many races. Today, Sen. Stephen Saland (R), whose race was originally too close to call, emerged victorious after the absentee ballots were all counted. NOM has no real hope of overturning marriage equality in New York, and this race proves that it isn’t even very effective at scaring Republicans into opposing LGBT rights.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: ‘Homosexuality Ceases Procreation’

CNN’s Piers Morgan recently sat down for an extended interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which will air in full this evening. Morgan challenges him about his anti-gay positions, imploring to him that people are born gay, and Ahmadinejad responds by claiming that homosexuality “ceases procreation” and is “something ugly” comparable to stealing:

AHMADINEJAD: Do you really believe that someone is born homosexual?

MORGAN: Yes, I absolutely believe that. Yes, I do.

AHMADINEJAD: I’m sorry, Let me ask you this: Do you believe anyone is given birth to through homosexuality? Homosexuality ceases procreation. Who has said that if you like or believe in doing something ugly and others do not accept your behavior, they’re denying your freedom? Who says that? Perhaps in a country they wish to legitimize stealing?

Watch it:

Obviously, the presence of gay people in society does nothing to inhibit straight people’s ability to reproduce, but that has not prevented the widespread persecution of LGBT people in Iran, including hangings of people convicted of homosexuality. Ahmadinejad has previously condemned homosexuality as “an ugly, shameful deed” and in 2007, he infamously claimed that “In Iran, we don’t have homosexuals like in your country. In Iran, we do not have this phenomenon.”

Why Pop Culture Tells Gay Stories For Straight People

Last week, I went long on the future of popular culture about gay people and a pet peeve of mine: the treatment of homosexuality as primarly a source of problems instead of joy, whether it’s in the historical pop portrayal of gay people as deviant, miserable, and damned, or of homophobia as the primary dramatic story engine for gay characters. As is always the case on this subject, my writing was informed by conversations with friends and writers like Tyler Lewis, who writes better on the specific experiences of black gay men than anyone I know, and Slate critic June Thomas. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to sit down with June and tape our conversations for a new Bloggingheads episode:

It was a conversation that helped mentally crystallize for me the extent to which non-straight characters are written for the enjoyment of and in deference to the perspectives of straight people. Shows and movies that aren’t made specifically for gay people, like both iterations of Queer as Folk, are allowed to have one gay person or gay couple. We don’t get to see gay people in gay communities, to see gay men who are friends with lesbians (though that seems like it could change on The New Normal, where creator Ryan Murphy has announced plans to introduce a gay couple) because shows with gay characters are so often about gay characters’ relationships to a straight-dominated world, or more often, about straight people’s relationships to gay people, no matter whether or not straight people are the gay characters. Cultural signaling, like a man’s interest in fashion or a woman’s interest in sports, or is less about fleshing out the personalities and interests of the characters who possess them than in signaling to straight audiences about story developments: Kurt’s clothes on Glee mean there will be bullying, parental difficulty, a change of wardrobe, a revitalization of his confidence, and an eventual journey to the big city. Homophobia is something for gay characters to overcome, but also for straight characters to learn from, for straight viewers to use as a self-congratulatory benchmark, assuring themselves that they’d never behave so badly.

I’m being harsh here. I know that. The process of straight people learning and appreciating, rather than demonizing, gay people’s lives and challenges and gay cultures, such as they exist, is not an irrelevant process. But I’m tired of the constant need for accommodation. I’m tired of the idea that straight people are going to be most interested in stories about themselves than in stories about gay people even if the execution of say, an excellent love story about two men like Keep the Lights On is richer and deeper than so much romantic comedy claptrap. I’m tired, similarly, of the idea that stories about men are the default, that both men and women will turn into them, and that stories about women are somehow niche, that men won’t tune into them. In both of these areas, people who limit themselves to stories about themselves are both denying themselves great pleasure and beauty. And they’re defaulting to the privileged position of being able to expect that Hollywood will continue providing them stories about people whose lives are a heightened version of their own. At the end of the day, if people want to cut themselves off from stories that could move them, that’s their loss. It’s just frustrating to me when someone else’s lack of curiosity reaffirms Hollywood’s own, and limits what options are available to the rest of us.

Wisconsin University Denies In-State Tuition To Same-Sex Spouse | The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has used the state’s ban on same-sex marriage to deny in-state tuition rates to the same-sex spouse of a medical resident. In-state students annually pay $20,000 less in tuition costs, but the school denied Jorge Quintero the opportunity to benefit from his New York marriage to Dr. Robert Schneidewend. According to the couple, the university has offered various excuses for the decision and been generally unresponsive to their questions and concerns.

Focus On The Family Endorses Ex-Gay Splinter Group For ‘Sexual Brokenness’

Focus on the Family has endorsed the Restored Hope Network, an ex-gay splinter group that broke off after Exodus International announced it would no longer try to “cure” homosexuality. Restored Hope describes homosexuality as a “perversion of God’s will for sexual holiness” and tries to “transform” gays and lesbians from being “broken sexual sinners.” Focus’ resident ex-gay, Jeff Johnston, who said recently that there are “a variety of roads into homosexuality,” described the “sexual brokenness” that Restored Hope purports to heal:

Sexually and relationally broken – just think about it for a minute:

  • Because of Adam’s sin, our whole self is impacted by sin – including our identity, our sexuality and our ability to connect and maintain healthy relationships
  • After they sinned, Adam and Eve feel ashamed, hide from God and begin blaming others; their eldest boy kills his brother; relational brokenness – inside families and between us and God
  • Our culture is saturated with broken sexuality, and we’re exposed to it and impacted by it from childhood on; sexual brokenness runs deep in our world; it’s so much a part of our background that we don’t always notice
  • Satan roams the earth like a lion, using sexual and relational brokenness to destroy individuals, families, churches, groups, businesses…

This is how conservative Christianity describes homosexuality, as “Satan roaming the earth like a lion.” It leaves no room for the very true love that same-sex couples have for each other, nor the families they are raising across this country. According to Focus on the Family, they are defective people destroying society who need to be fixed and erased. This is simply not a position that can be reconciled with reality.

POLL: Minnesota Voters Split On Marriage Inequality Amendment | A new poll from the Minneapolis Star Tribune shows a very close race for Minnesota’s proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, with 49 percent prepared to vote for it and 47 percent opposed. A plurality is not a victory, however, as 50 percent of the ballots must approve the measure, so all abstentions count as “No” votes. Despite the divided opinions on marriage, 68 percent of voters support civil unions for same-sex couples while only 23 percent oppose them.

Minnesota State Rep: Marriage Equality Is Not ‘Normal Behavior’

Minnesota incumbent State Rep. Mary Franson (R) defended her support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman during a debate last week, arguing that the measure would protect the state’s children from abnormal behavior. Franson said:

My concerns are that our children in our schools could be taught some liberal agendas because of the marriage amendment. Because in the schools they may be taught that, this is normal behavior. I personally do not believe it is…that’s something that I wish to protect our children from.

There is no evidence that exposure to LGBT adults and issues hurts children, and including LGBT-friendly content in school curricula has been shown to make schools safer for LGBT students.

Paul Ryan On ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’: ‘I Think We Need To Move On’

In an interview with WPTV of West Palm Beach, Florida, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan (R) said that even though he opposed the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” he believes that the issue is “past us” and it would be a “step in the wrong direction” to undo that repeal:

RYAN: I talked to a lot of good friends of mine who are combat leaders in the theater and they just didn’t think the timing of this was right to do this when our troops were in the middle of harm’s way in combat.

Now that it’s done, we should not reverse it. I think that would be a step in the wrong direction because people have already disclosed themselves. So, I think this issue is past us. It’s done. And, I think we need to move on.

Watch it:

Mitt Romney has similarly said that repeal should be left alone. But two weeks ago, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said the opposite: that the Republican Party would pursue reinstating the discriminatory military policy if it takes control in Washington. A new study shows that a full year of gay and lesbian open service has had no negative effect on military readiness.

Chicago Alderman Holds Back On Approving Chick-fil-A Franchise After Chain’s Media Shenanigans

Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno

Last Thursday, Chick-fil-A issued a press release clarifying that, despite rumors to the contrary, it would continue to fund organizations with anti-gay agendas. In case there were any further doubts, president and COO Dan Cathy confirmed to Mike Huckabee that the restaurant “made no such concessions” in order to obtain permission to open a new restaurant in Chicago.

Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno (D) had previously said he would block Chick-fil-A because of these donations and policies, but last week expressed optimism that the restaurant had changed. Given the new revelations, Moreno is no longer sure he feels comfortable introducing the necessary legislation for the Chicago franchise to open:

MORENO: Dan Cathy decided to make a PUBLIC statement to Mike Huckabee that, at the least, muddied the progress we had made with Chick-fil-A and, at the worst, contradicted the documents and promises Chick-fil-A made to me and the community earlier this month. Since Mr.Cathy made a PUBLIC statement, I am PUBLICLY asking him to confirm and support what I was told and shown by his company representatives. [...]

Perhaps Mr. Cathy felt that he could make these public statements to Mike Huckabee because I had provided a letter of support for his restaurant to the City of Chicago earlier this week. I provided this letter based on the progress we had made with Chick-fil-A. I still need to introduce legislation to make the Chick-fil-A in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago a reality. I will wait to see what Mr. Cathy’s next PUBLIC statement is, and reflect on that statement before moving forward with appropriate legislation.

Chick-fil-A gives millions of dollars to anti-gay organizations — including hate groups and ex-gay therapy proponents — has no protections for LGBT employees, and Cathy has described same-sex marriage as “twisted up kind of stuff” that could only be left to a “deprived mind.”
