Executive Experience

Over at Edge of the American West they have a useful roundup of their posts on Sarah Palin’s “executive experience” and what people might want to know about it:

Sounds good. Of course I’m also probably the last blogger on the planet to note that by the “Palin has more executive experience than Obama” logic the right is now using, Palin is actually more experienced than John McCain which I don’t think they want to adopt as their official position.

DeLay: ‘It’s Unfortunate That We’re Not Going To Be Able To Have The Convention That They Planned’

This morning on Fox News, former House Speaker Tom DeLay tried telling host Megyn Kelly how Republicans are focused on Hurricane Gustav, rather than their convention. He said that for President Bush, “politics is the least part of what he’s thinking about right now.” Regarding Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), DeLay said that he has “shifted his mindset away from the politics.”

Yet just a few seconds later, when Kelly again asked him about the convention, DeLay couldn’t help but let his true feelings show:

KELLY: As somebody who’s a party faithful, who’s a deep conservative, do you worry about how this will affect . . . the RNC this week, how it will affect people perceptions of the Republicans if it doesn’t go well. Help give us an idea of how you’re looking at it.

DELAY: Well, what we’re looking at is, it’s unfortunate that we’re not going to be able to have the convention that they planned, but that’s not what’s important right now.

Watch it:

Hurricane Katrina killed more than 1,600 people along the Gulf Coast. Gustav has now made landfall southwest of New Orleans as a category 2 storm, but approximately 10,000 people remain in the city.

Union Salute Video

This was the substantive portion of the “Labor Salute to Republicans” event such as it was, with representatives from the NEA, the Firefighters, and some of the building trades talking about the importance of union-GOP ties:

One moral of the story is that interest group politics is more complicated than a simple caricature would offer. And then again, it’s even more complicated than “well, unions need to find a few Republicans to support.” Maybe unions participated in this event, but most didn’t. The more ideological and coalition-minded SEIU is organizing a Take Back Labor Day concert as a counterpoint to the Republican festivities.

Palin Ran Ted Stevens’ 527

stevenspalinbig.jpg

I was just speaking to a couple of GOP activists from North Dakota about Sarah Palin. These were very much the fabled “base” people who are “excited” by the Palin pick. Much like left-wing ideologues, it turns out, conservative activists have a real disliking of “bad” Republicans. So these guys didn’t know very much about Palin’s record in office, but they knew she was a solid conservative who’d managed to take down an incumbent Republican and still hold the statehouse for the GOP. And this, basically, is Palin’s qualification for office — she’s less corrupt than your average Alaska Republican. As best one can tell this is true. But the extent of Palin’s distance from the Alaska Republican establishment can be easily overstated. Consider this reporting by Matthew Mosk:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

And:

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

Meanwhile, John McCain officially thinks 527s should be abolished.

Man Bites Dog

You might have thought that lavish conventions spreads were only for big business or that only Democrats would kowtow to public sector unions, but there was some rather nice stuff available at the “Labor Salutes the Republican Party” lunch event at the Dakota Jazz Club sponsored by the National Education Association in partnership with some other unions:

Skewers

I should have some video up some of the strange spectacle of union leaders singing the praises of their GOP friends.

Palin Served As Director Of 527 Group Called ‘Ted Stevens Excellence In Public Service, Inc.’

stevenspalinbig.jpgThe Washington Post’s Matthew Mosk reports that Sarah Palin “began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens“:

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Last October on Fox News Sunday, John McCain said, “The 527s need to be eliminated.”

Stevens is hardly a model of “excellence in public service.” He was indicted in July “on seven felony counts of failing to disclose gifts that he received from an oil services company,” VECO. That same oil company has ties to Palin, contributing 10 percent of her total campaign fund when she ran for lieutenant governor in 2002.

After Stevens was indicted, Palin vocally defended him. In turn, Stevens endorsed Palin as McCain’s vice presidential pick last week, stating that he has worked with her “for over a decade.”

Party On

I hadn’t realized the right was even pretending that they’re taking a “sober” approach to the coincidence of their convention with Hurricane Gustav. But for the record: Politically problematic speech by unpopular incumbent president = canceled. Parties = not canceled. Indeed, your ThinkProgress team walked passed Minneapolis’ famed rock club 1st Avenue / 7th Street Entry and saw what I think was a fundraising event featuring Sammy Hagar. They told us we were in violation of the dress code and that getting in would cost $125 so we skipped it.

I think conservatism could use a better class of celebrity endorser.

Sarah Palin announces her teenage daughter is pregnant.

palin.jpgIn a statement released just as Hurricane Gustav was striking the Gulf Coast, Sarah Palin and her husband announced their 17-year old daughter is pregant and plans to keep the baby. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that, as parents, we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned,” the Palins wrote. “We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.” McCain officials said the news of the daughter’s pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called “mud-slinging and lies” circulating on liberal blog sites.

Update

The Huffington Post recalls that in November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped.

Update

,Ben Smith notes that Palin has previously said she would not support “explicit sex-ed programs.”

Update

,”Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.”

Iraq war vets rally in St. Paul.

On our way into St. Paul this morning, several members of ThinkProgress stopped to listen to a rally held by a group of Iraq war veterans who are opposed to the war. After denouncing Sen. John McCain’s treatment of veterans and his failure to vote for increase funding for veterans health programs, the speaker of the group said his fellow Iraq vets would travel to New Orleans to serve in relief efforts. “We hope that the world is watching; we hope that America is watching as returning war veterans continue to sacrifice and serve their country,” he said.
