Florida Gov. Jeb Bush criticized immigration fear-mongers for “pounding their chests” for short-term political gain. Bush said the tone of the debate had been “hurtful” to his family. “My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad.”

Darfur Update: U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland said an additional 200,000 people are being forced from their homes in Sudan. “Many believe the problems are over in Darfur. They are getting worse.” Last month marked the third year of the ongoing genocide in Sudan.

Government watchdog Citizens Against Government Waste doubles as a lobbying firm with paying clients “” “including Mexican Avocado Growers, who paid $100,000 to lobby against restrictions on avocado imports and the tobacco companies, which paid at least $245,000 to urge the federal government not to regulate the industry.”

The nation’s airport security system has become “overly rigid, static and predictable,” Kip Hawley, a top transportation security official, told the Senate yesterday.

$500,000: The average tax reduction for people earning more than $10 million a year thanks to President Bush’s tax cuts, according to new data showing the cuts “have significantly lowered the tax burden on the richest Americans.”

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found the “requirement that a large fraction of President Bush’s global AIDS plan go to promote abstinence and fidelity is causing confusion in many countries and in a few is eroding other prevention efforts.” Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) wrote a letter to Condi Rice calling for immediate changes to the requirement.

Another GAO report released yesterday found “government agencies that use private information services for law enforcement, counterterrorism and other investigations often do not follow federal rules to protect Americans’ privacy.”

In late 2001, Jack Abramoff “proposed to sell his services to the much-criticized government of Sudan to help improve its abysmal reputation in the United States.”

Thousands turned out in 32 Wisconsin communities to vote on a referendum to bring the troops home from Iraq. The symbolic measure was passed by 24 towns and cities.
