At his press conference today, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales acknowledged that his former chief of staff Kyle Sampson, who resigned over the scandal yesterday, remains on the Justice Department payroll. “His transition — as a technical matter, he is at the Department as he transitions out and looks for another employment.”
More Gonzales: “I acknowledge that mistakes were made here. I accept that responsibility, and my pledge to the American people is to find out what went wrong here, to assess accountability, and to make improvements so that the mistakes that occurred in this instance do not occur again in the future.”
UPDATE: CREW calls for a special prosecutor to investigate potential criminal violations.
UPDATE II: Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) responded to Gonzales: “Did the attorney general not know that 8 U.S. attorneys were to be fired? He didn’t know, he shouldn’t be attorney general, plain and simple. That is not a minor personnel decision. That is a major act that has shaken the integrity of the U.S. attorney offices — not only those in question — but all of them, to the core.” Watch it:
