Will Bush pitch to a substance abuser?

bushnation.jpg On Sunday, President Bush will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Nationals Park, the new home of the Washington Nationals. The player likely to catch Bush’s pitch is Nationals starting catcher Paul Lo Duca, who was mentioned 37 times in the Mitchell Report on substance-enhancing drugs. Bush has repeatedly denounced the use of steroids. On Windows on Washington, Ken Herman writes:

So here’s the potential opening-night visual: The president who is concerned about substance abuse in baseball winds up and throws the ceremonial pitch to a catcher linked to substance abuse. It’s all smiles and happiness as president and catcher pose for the post-pitch photo.

In 2006, Vice President Cheney was loudly booed when he threw out the first pitch for the Nationals. In a rare move for a president, Bush missed the team’s home openers in both 2006 and 2007.
