Colin Powell endorses Obama.

Today on NBC’s Meet the Press, former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell endorses Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL).

UPDATE: Today on Fox, host Chris Wallace asked McCain about the endorsement. McCain said, “This doesn’t come as a surprise.” Watch it:

UPDATE II: On ABC, CNN’s David Gergen called it the “most important” endorsement of the 2008 campaign thus far.

UPDATE III: Watch Powell’s endorsement on NBC here:

UPDATE IV: This morning, Fox and Friends wondered, without proof, whether Powell’s endorsement of Obama was retribution for not being chosen as McCain’s VP: “And do we know whether in fact he had been vetted by the McCain campaign for vice president at some point? Do we know whether they ever had a discussion with Sen. McCain about whether he would be considered as a vice presidential candidate and if he did, and he wasn’t selected, how does that affect this endorsement?” (HT: JimboSlice)

UPDATE V: The New York Times has more on Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, a Muslim U.S. soldier who died in Iraq. Khan was referenced by Powell this morning to illustrate the point that being labeled a “Muslim” should not be deemed a smear. The photo Powell referenced:
