fenty2.jpgOn the same day that Vermont legalized same-sex marriage — and just five days after the Iowa Supreme Court did the same — the D.C. Council voted today “to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.” While domestic partnerships are currently legal in the Capital, the bill will allow D.C. couples to marry in one of four states that allow same-sex marriages and have that marriage recognized under city law. Council member David Catania (I) said the vote was a “march” towards legalizing same-sex marriage. The 12-0 vote “sets the stage for…a clash with Congress, which approves the city’s laws under Home Rule.” Asked if he would sign the bill, Mayor Fenty said he would review the legislation but added, “I support gay marriage.”
