Rupert Murdoch considers following Bush’s lead by buying the Texas Rangers.

murdoch2News Corp, Rupert Murdoch’s media empire that owns Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post, now might buy a baseball team that used to belong to former president George W. Bush:

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. is considering an acquisition of the Texas Rangers baseball franchise, according to a published report, in a move that would allow it to reap rewards from the team’s resurgence in the standings.

News Corp., whose properties include Fox television and the Wall Street Journal, is leaning toward entering a bid at the Rangers’ bankruptcy auction Wednesday, the New York Post reported. The Post also is a News Corp. property.

The media conglomerate’s broadcast holdings include a number of regional Fox Sports channels, including Fox Sports Southwest, which holds the television rights to Rangers games.

News Corp. owned the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1998 to 2004.

According to the Statesman, a different prospective bidder “is preferred by Major League Baseball.” Bush became the Rangers’ owner in 1989 after failing in the oil business.
