"Slain Giffords Staffer’s Fiancee Calls For High-Capacity Magazine Ban"
On the one-month anniversary of the shootings in Tuscon, the fiancee of Gabe Zimmerman, a staffer to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) who was killed in the attacks, called for a ban on high-capacity gun magazines like the one used by gunman Jared Loughner. At a news conference yesterday, Kelly O’Brien spoke publicly for the first time since the shootings, which claimed the lives of six people and wounded 13 others. “The man who killed Gabe and five other people fired 31 shots in 15 seconds. That’s two shots every second,” O’Brien said. “Ten bullets are more than enough for self-defense, which is why most people own handguns,” O’Brien said. She became emotional at times, noting that “I was planning on spending the rest of my life with him, but one month ago today, Gabe was taken from me”:
High-capacity ammunition magazines were illegal until Republicans allowed the ban to lapse in 2004. O’Brien endorsed a bill in the Arizona legislature authored by Rep. Steve Farley (D), which would ban the sale of high-capacity magazines. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) have introduced similar bills in Congress.
