After Calling It ‘A Good Issue To Keep Alive,’ Perry Says Birther Conspiracy Is ‘One Of The Biggest Distractions’

This morning, GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry explained his recent flirtation with birther conspiracy myth: “It’s a good issue to keep alive,” he said. “It’s fun to poke at [President Obama] a little bit, and say, how about, ‘Let’s see your grades and your birth certificate.” Hours later — after a slew of conservatives slammed him — Perry backed away from this malicious frivolity. When a CNN reporter asked him this afternoon at a press conference what it would take to convince him that Obama was born in the U.S., Perry called the question “one of the biggest distractions that there is going.” Insisting he wants to talk about jobs, Perry said, “That is a distraction and Americans don’t really care about that.” Watch it:
