Statement from the UK science community
10 December 2009
We, members of the UK science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive. They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity. That research has been subject to peer review and publication, providing traceability of the evidence and support for the scientific method.
The science of climate change draws on fundamental research from an increasing number of disciplines, many of which are represented here. As professional scientists, from students to senior professors, we uphold the findings of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, which concludes that ‘Warming of the climate system is unequivocal’ and that ‘Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations’.
You can find the statement, with the full list of names, here, on the Met Office website.
Last month, after the Swifthack/Climategate story broke, the Met Office joined with NERC and the Royal Society to issue an updated climate science statement pointing out that it’s the hottest decade on record and “even since the 2007 IPCC Assessment the evidence for dangerous, long-term and potentially irreversible climate change has strengthened.”
For completness and linkability, here are other recent scientific statements:
- The American Association for the Advancement of Science reaffirms “The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society.”
- American Meteorological Society reaffirms “that the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming; that humans have significantly contributed to this change; and that further climate change will continue to have important impacts on human societies”¦.”
- Nature editorial: “Nothing in the e-mails undermines the scientific case that global warming is real “” or that human activities are almost certainly the cause.”
- Statement on stolen emails by IPCC Working Group I on basic climate science
- 18 leading scientific organizations send letter to Senators affirming the climate is changing, “human activities are the primary driver,” impacts are projected to worsen “substantially” and “If we are to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change, emissions of greenhouse gases must be dramatically reduced.”
If there are other recent statement by scientific bodies I missed, please put the links in the comments.

I like that this statement mentions the thousands of researchers doing good work, but I also think that statements like these should mention that research into the greenhouse process is an old and mature scientific field, and that the basis for it in physics stretches back over 100 years, long before there was any concern that we might we be increasing it.
The deniers try to find one real or alleged weak link, and claim that the whole edifice of AGW is falling. It’s like making a little chip in the corner of a brick building and yelling that the whole building is falling.
If you want to bet on how bad the media covers climate science, I bet there’s barely a mention of this statement. Yet, we will keep hearing abou those emails!
And current post at Dot Earth?….wait…wait…
“Skeptics Hold Fast in Copenhagen”
The beat that just won’t stop!
Dot Earth – what a waste of electrons (and the carbon that goes with it)
my bad… The Blog Post is just the follow on the article featuring climate contrarians on the fist page of the International section!!!! And the only article on Copenhagen in the paper today!!!
Apparently the NY Times entire world view of climate change is seen through a skeptic/denier lens. if they can’t change the glasses maybe they should change the eyes?
(sorry for the obsessive kremlinology like fascination…can’t help it…)
Actually the article was rather entertaining, it seems clear the author thought the attendees were a bunch of cranks. Though he was too subtle about it …
I mean … these two snippets are hardly flattering to their cause …
Let’s see … maybe it’s CO2, but its from volcanoes, not people. No, it’s not even warming, sea levels aren’t actually rising. Its warming, but it’s the sun.
Doesn’t really come across as being a coherent rebuttal of science, does it?
And then …
