While some confused people think we are headed to a post-partisan era, more reality-based analysts, like centrist political reporter Dana Milbank, know what nonsense that is.

The Republican party has been taken over intellectually by its most extreme elements, with the Big-Oil backed Tea Party acting as political enforcers to crush even ‘moderate’ conservatives who don’t fall in lock-stop with their anti-government, anti-science, pro-pollution agenda.  Republican Senators most certainly got the message of what happened to GOPers like Mike Castle (‘moderate’), Lisa Murkowski (‘moderate’, Big Oil, pro-pollution conservative), and Bob Bennett (mainstream conservative global warming denier).

I have spelled this out in a series of columns (because it is the most consequential political reality for climate and clean energy policy for the foreseeable future), but it’s important to hear it from the bastion of centrist inside-the-beltway analysis.  In his column, “The Republican Party could use some adults,” Milbank explains:

In an interview last week with National Journal‘s Major Garrett, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was asked what his priority would be for Republicans after their expected gains in Tuesday’s election.

The possibilities were many: Balance the budget and pay down the debt? Fight the terrorists and reform entitlements? Support and defend the Constitution?

No, McConnell’s priorities were elsewhere. “The single most important thing we want to achieve,” he said, “is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

The single most important thing?

This bit of truth-telling, reminiscent of McConnell’s lament in August that “I wish we had been able to obstruct more” of Obama’s agenda, underscored a problem that will come to the fore if Republicans succeed in winning a majority on Tuesday: The party is sorely in need of grown-ups.

When Republicans gained control of Congress 16 years ago, the revolutionaries were eventually convinced by their leaders to cut deals with President Bill Clinton, leading to milestone achievements on the budget and welfare reform.

But there is no Bob Dole in the Republican leadership today; there isn’t even a Newt Gingrich. There is nobody with the clout to tell Tea Party-inspired backbenchers when it’s time to put down the grenades and negotiate. Rather, there are weak leaders who, frightened by the Tea Party radicals, have become unquestioning followers of a radical approach.

“This is not a time for compromise,” House Republican leader John Boehner informed Sean Hannity on the radio on Wednesday. When Hannity mentioned that retiring Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) called it unwise to attempt a repeal of health-care reform, Boehner replied: “I love Judd Gregg, but maybe he doesn’t get it. . . . We’re going to do everything – and I mean everything – we can do, to kill it, stop it, slow it down.”

After that bit of reasoned dialogue, Boehner resumed his planning to hold a rally with GOP House candidate Rich Iott, a Nazi reenactor.

The rest of Republican House leadership is no better. “Look, there will be no compromise on stopping runaway spending, deficits and debt,” Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.), the No. 3 House Republican, told radio host Hugh Hewitt recently. “There will be no compromise on repealing Obamacare. There will be no compromise on stopping Democrats from growing government and raising taxes. And if I haven’t been clear enough yet, let me say again: no compromise.”

Clear enough!

Compromise was not always a dirty word for conservatives. Ronald Reagan – so idolized by Pence that he has perfected a Reaganesque head-tilt while speaking – compromised with the Democrats on Social Security and taxes. American Democracy couldn’t function without compromise.

But now there is nobody to stand up to the take-no-prisoners caucus, led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), who has floated the notion of impeaching Obama because she doesn’t like his policies, and Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.), who threatens to leave the GOP if his colleagues don’t pursue his biblical-law agenda.

When a blog reported that Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) had assured GOP donors that “crazier Republicans” would not repeal health-care reform because GOP leaders wouldn’t allow it, Corker and McConnell both rushed out statements reassuring conservatives that they are devoted to repealing the law.

When former Senate Republican leader Trent Lott told The Post’s Shailagh Murray that “we need to co-opt” the new Republicans because “we don’t need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples,” the furious reaction included a demand from Fox News’s Glenn Beck: “I want people like Trent Lott to be shut down in the Republican Party.”

And there isn’t a single Republican leader, in Congress or among the party’s 2012 hopefuls, who has the power to disobey an order from Beck – or Rush Limbaugh, O’Reilly or Hannity.

These are the Dark Ages for America.

My one ray of hope, and I know it’s a small one, is that the media on both sides are subservient to their ratings. This means they put a lot of effort into going for whichever story or narrative will draw crowds, and less into finding out what the un-distorted picture looks like.

This *might* mean that the perceived majority support for the Rabid Right is, in fact, exaggerated.

We’ll see in a couple days I suppose, but regardless of who’s elected for my district, I intent to make myself a nuisance, and if it’s a republican, then I’ll send them a different climate research paper every day.

Come to think of it, maybe I’ll do that for Democrats too – I’d like to see some indication that there are politicians who have a grasp of the severity of the situation…

  2. Mike Roddy says:

Trent Lott, blow dried lobbyist for oil and coal companies, may have broken the record for consecutive zero ratings from the League of Conservation Voters while he was a Senator, and admires the late Confederate racist Strom Thurmond. He’s now too liberal for Beck? What the hell is going on in this country?

  3. It is perversely comforting that the Four Whoresmen of the Apocalypse: Beck, Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Hannity – can only influence human perception…. they cannot command the physics of thermodynamics

Thankfully, yet painfully, their words have no affect on reality.

Climate deniers come in 2 species:

CLIMATE VAMPIRES suck the life out of our ecosystems for profit – they are the Big Oil/Big Log/Big Food guys, and their paid-for politicians.

CLIMATE ZOMBIES are the regurgitators of the rubbish created by the PR companies and ‘unthink’-tanks paid for by the Climate Vampires.

Climate Zombies stalk the web, blogging, commenting, and generally polluting the political environment, causing confusion. Climate Zombies are ‘weapons of mass distraction’.

  5. Robbert says:

TAINTED TEA … they pump it free!

    An angry mob
    full of self-righteous indignity
unfurls the flag and spouts their screed
    of great piety!

    Truth be told,
    this game is old.
    It’s their latest ploy
that is born of nonsense and backed with noise!

    They screech their platitudes
laced with high and mighty attitudes
but their real design is to control your mind
and slowly, let you go blind!

They parade in the garb of our history,
claim the Constitution will set them free
and speak of a simpler time of great purity
but logic asks, “Just what gives; is something wrong,
is this more of their Tainted Tea?”

    To understand just
    what drives this band,
    it’s nothing less than
to take control and seize command!

They have no thought of right or wrong, weak or strong.
‘Fair’ is replaced by, ‘I don’t care.
‘Aid’ is pushed aside by ‘take’
and ‘give’ is thrown away to be replaced by ‘fate’.

They preach smaller government, lower taxes and freedom’s fun,
so brace yourself for their siren song!
Do you really think ‘progressive’ could stand for
bigger government, high taxes and the public wrong?

    These Fossil Fools push the golden rule;
if it’s gold, we take it, if it’s old we’ll forsake it!
They see pollution as not in need of a solution!

    They serve their aristocracy
and care not a wit about our Democracy!

They call Social Security, a welfare scam
but in truth, it is our mismanaged insurance plan,
    designed to resolve a problem
that was the scourge across all the land!

Is it Socialistic Security, or a twisted creed,
or a hate slur designed by a secrete oligarchy?
Is it a crime to be the one with serious need
or is good governance at the heart
of what makes us all, secure and free?

Thank no less than our Supreme Court
for now the World Corp snickers and gloats
    as they dump secrete cash
into the coffers to buy the vote!

Legalized bribery; call it just what it is!
If ya say, “Not so” you better see a shrink,
    cause they signed an agreement
    with invisible ink!

What they serve is ‘Tainted Tea’
and that is why they pump it free.
If for a moment you buy their spin
then truth denied is the game they win.

    Ask the question,
    don’t buy their spin,
    cause without your vote
    they will not win!

They claim they stand up for our liberty
but their master plan is a ploy to deceive!
    Is this just another Repug-nut-con?
My final prayer is, “Thy will be done!”

The word coward easily comes to mind when I look the GOP hopefuls. Of course they don’t have the stones to go against the blovators of the party and the country suffers for their lack of guts. I find it hard to accept that they don’t accept the views of science, but I could be wrong. They, again and again make stupid comments over evolution and climate change so maybe they are really just as dumb as a rock.

  7. neot says:

I propose that we start referring to the GOP and the Teahadis as the “Scorched Earth” party.

Skipping the New England attack ads on a Monday evening

Whose ads are these I do not know.
They must have spent a lot of dough
To keep those scenic trees in leaf .
For ads so lovely, dark and deep,
What matter if both pols are creeps
    Unfit to govern village sheep.
With ads like these it’s hard to know.
    I don’t think I’ll be voting though,
Election Day it tends to snow.

  10. William P says:

You’ve got it. Politics today is driven by Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reily, Hannity, Levine, Savage and the other right wing propagandists.

Example: you saw Senator Chuck Grasley go home to talk to his voters about his ideas for a health care system. He was surprised to hear from voters a vehement opposition to ANY type of health care system. Recall his previous cooperation with Obama vanished overnight, best captured by the phrase he heard voters chanting, then he immediately used himself, “They want to pull the plug on Grandma!” This phrase was a mantra on Fox “News”, on Limbaugh and the others. Grasley dared not utter anything different or he would be run out of office.

Our media today is greatly consolidated. The right saw this coming some time ago, unified their message, and captured the Republican Party using powerful TV and radio personalities. As you say, no Party member dare cross these real rulers of the Republican Party.

These talkers have one goal: elect Republican political leaders, then dictate what they say and do. But don’t be fooled by the “hot button” issues you hear in elections – Mosques, Birther talk, FREEDOM!, socialist take over, etc. These junk issues are not really important to the right wing propaganda machine nor those behind it. You will hear little or nothing of these hot issues once Republicans again take over government.

The Prize is profit-generating deregulation allowing more of the theft we saw from Wall St., banks and business in the trillions.(deregulation very much includes the environment). Second Prize: lowering or elimination of all taxes on the wealthy and corporations. This accomplishes the related goal of killing off costly programs to benefit the people. The goal: make this a nation of, by and FOR the corporations.

The shills in the right wing media work for these two enormously enriching changes in our system on behalf of corporations and the wealthy. They made major gains under Bush-Cheney, then were shocked by those they thought they had defeated – Progressives – who got back into power. Bush was much too obvious in his clumsy, fumbling take over of the nation for the corporations and the wealthy.

They are now building a fail-safe system to make sure that never happens again.

Some roll their eyes at WWII Germany comparisons, but do a little study of the clever and very successful propagandist of that era – Joseph Goebbels. He consciously adapted a mix of entertainment, education and propaganda very similar to what you hear from Limbaugh, O’Riely, Hannity and other right wing propagandists. Goebbels had the same ability to get people to throw out reason and logic we see in a Limbaugh and or a Hannity or a Beck.

Asked if there is a danger we could lose our democracy as Germany did, Noam Chompsky recently hesitated, then said maybe – if the right Strong Man arose now.

  11. William P says:

    Jim Groom #6

Republicans are not stupid regarding global warming. The ruling right wing media (Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.) have decreed global warming is a hoax and not man-caused. Once decreed it becomes a matter of “faith and morals” as understood by the Church. You do not speak otherwise under any circumstances.

Why was this ruled a “matter of faith and morals”? The concept of man-caused global warming very much threatens the vast profits of a key corporate sector of America – the energy sector. This ruling was inevitable and will not be altered – reason, logic, science non-withstanding.

    Not very independent, are they?

  13. catman306 says:

So how do we ‘unelect’ Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and O’Reilly? The popular media and advertisers have put these people in place with the power to effect huge numbers of Americans’ thinking about key issues.

Prosecutors should monitor every word these trouble makers utter and file charges on them whenever they break sedition and treason laws. Letting them get away with their lies and half-truths will destroy America.
