Michele Bachmann Pledges to Have the EPA’s “Doors Locked and Lights Turned Off”
"Michele Bachmann Pledges to Have the EPA’s “Doors Locked and Lights Turned Off”"
If Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann can’t abolish the Environmental Protection Agency like she promised in June, she may just try to lock employees out of the building.
Speaking at campaign rally in Iowa last week, Bachmann made it clear that she’ll do anything it takes to stamp out environmental protection efforts — even if that means padlocking the front door and switching off the breakers, according to a report from the Des Moines Register:
“I pledge to you I’m not a talker. I’m a doer,” she said …
“And I guarantee you the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) will have doors locked and lights turned off and they will only be about conservation,” she said earlier today at a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids. “It will be a new day and a new sheriff in Washington, D.C.”
Republicans have made anti-EPA statements a major part of their campaigns, with Bachmann making some of the most inflammatory remarks. In June, she famously called for “the mother of all repeal bills” focused on the EPA, which she renamed “the job killing organization of America.”
Republican House leaders are also ratcheting up pressure on EPA regulations. Last week, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Fred Upton called on President Obama to stop new EPA regulations on mercury and air toxics, calling them a “regulatory train wreck.”
The EPA is a convenient bogey man for Republican leaders when it comes to their messaging on jobs. But what they don’t mention is that new regulations will be phased in over a three-year period of time, giving most power companies enough time to meet standards. This has nothing to do with today’s economic issues. And over the next five years, the number of jobs created through retrofitting power plants with pollution controls could be in the tens of thousands, with virtually no impact on nationwide rates, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration projections.
Over the 40-year history of the EPA, there’s simply no evidence of the kind of mass murdering of jobs that politicians claim. In fact, since the agency was created in the early 1970’s, GDP has grown by 200 percent and common pollutants have dropped by 63 percent. But the facts don’t seem to matter when it comes to environmental issues this campaign season.
At least Bachmann’s plan to shut off all the lights at the EPA will conserve energy.

Well, it is a tactic the democrats use, but with the Tea Party, fear mongering is method #1. i.e. The Birth Certificate, Obama Trying to Enforce Sharia Law, Obama is a Muslim, Obama is a Communist, Obama is a Socialist, Obama Hates Christians, Obama’s Education was Paid for by the Saudis and Now He Owes Them, etc. etc. And for the record, corporations if forced to make a decision between doing the right thing (like keeping our air and water clean) and making a profit will ALWAYS go for the profit. This is why we need regulation on some things, i.e. protecting the consumer, protecting our food supply, protecting our environment. I could go on and on.

No, she said the EPA was going to be only about conservation. Didn’t say of what, so presumably it’s going to conserve all the threatened wildlife from going extinct immediately as the nation is Borged by the mega-rich to exponentially expand their wealth; we have to keep some wildlife around for the Nuge to shoot.

The EPA has caused the problem with high gas prices, they have refused to allow any new oil refineries to be built since the 70s. We have plenty of oil but lack refining capacity. The EPA closes down oil exploration because of some lizard in Texas. Refuses to let farmers in California water their crops because of a tiny little fish. No wonder there are no jobs. Get government out of our lives, other agencies of govt have to go as well.

Germany is a much different animal. Labor has a place at the corporate table and Germans are alergic to debt. Their banks didn’t get involved with subprime loans and all of that. @Ragnild- It is not true that you can’t live on one income in this country. Many studies and articles have been written on how this can be done. Americans choose not to consider this option because they are greedy and can’t live with any less than their neighbor has. The expenses of a second vehicle, child care, meals eaten on the fly, among other things, all can add up to more than the second income actually brings in.

She really should sit down at the table with some environmental “middle” men before saying such things. There’s a reason why these law were enacted and if the American Public wishes to continue drinking relatively safe water and not having methylethyldeath dumped in their unlined landfills, perhaps they’ll not base ther vote on nonsensical promises like this. Just because something is personally inconvenient to you does not make it “excessive”. Rather than relax regulations, they need to be strengthened and the funds need to be allocated to enforce them.

I wouldn’t say it’s a matter of personal convenience. Having been both an environmental regulator AND responsible for ensuring environmental management compliance (that exceeds regulatory expectations due to govt liability) of over 310 contiguous square miles of govt property, I have rather extensive experience in the matter. There is a middle ground that keeps companies compliantly productive and citizens safe. And if perhaps you weren’t blinded by your bias you’d see that was my point. I have a high respect for the regulatory community…having been an initimate part of it for so long and having jeopardized my life for the taxpayers that I served. They are just as overtaxed with the excessive requirements as the regulated community is.

If you mean in the general election (Nov. 2012), you’re probably right. But in the primaries, this is how the game is played when you’re a Republican. You have to say bat sh*t crazy things to get your voters to swarm the polls, and then you can walk it back and sound more reasonable later, as needed.
People don’t realize that last time around Palin wasn’t really running for VP in 2008, she was running for the nomination in 2012. That’s why she’s been, well, the way she is, ever since McCain picked her.

(What a joke, just NOT funny).

The EPA has way over stepped their boundaries, making it way too hard to own or operate business in America. Thank God someone is fighting for a cause to eliminate so much strict regulations that companies take their business out of this country. Don’t hate the person because she is standing for so many things that liberals are for to destroy this country.

“..and they will only be about conservation,” says Bachmann.
So what’s not to conserve about health, energy, uncontaminated soil and water?
The US EPA has been so underfunded in recent years that much of its office space is already at or near locked-door, lights-out. Staff work from home a day or two a week to conserve.

Bachmann needs to be placed into a quiet home with 24 hour care before she gets more totally crazy ideas and causes more damage.

Why the “but”? It’s a historical fact that debt rises under the GOP and falls under the Dems. Bachmann is a typical Republican in that she is for war and for corporate subsidies and lowering their taxes.

Now sit down Michelle. Relax. You are now going to watch a little video based on a story by Dr. Seuss. Remember him from your childhood, if you had one. Here it is: It is titled “The Lorax.” “I speak for the trees. I speak for the Swammie Swans. I speak for the Bobaloops. I speak for the Honey Fish.” I am the LORAX, also known as the EPA.

Every person with a conscience and who loves our country in its pristine best (think Yellowstone, Rockies, clear rivers and lakes sparkling in the sunshine, plentiful healthy wild animals and fish, etc. – oh yeah, and healthy humans, esp. our children!) needs to read this posting and understand who this woman is – she is a danger to our country – she is NOT the great hope or the next Sarah Palin but more palatable that many believe her to be!

what about Pledges to have more work, health care, and education? she just want people to die…not sure if anyone has read her article in NY Times but she did say she wants to make this nation a christian nation and will change the constitution to a bible constitution…and she will use force! I remember a time in history when this happened…it was called the inquisition.

They have set their throne above the earth and her children…they claim juridiction over the earth and enslave its population to serve their own maniacle ends… The alians have invaded… they have enslaved us and imprisoned us… forcing us to bake bricks in the sun to build their towers and temples… forcing us to serve their god who requires blood for the remission of sins. RISE UP and do not shrink from death to defend the earth against these blood-thirsty war-mongers…They pollute our waters, slash and burn our forests and destroy our crops. They invade our homes and bring weapons into our churches, They have reduced us to either slaves or beggars, scavengers and theives in their cities and persued us and persecuted us when we ran into the hills to escape their tyranny.

This woman is crazy like a fox. Her main point is that enacting laws to protect the environment will handicap business. This will reduce competitiveness and slow our economic growth. AND she is right about this!
Saving our environment will require enormous conservation and sacrifice. She knows that no one wants to hear this message. Of course she fails to mention that this free exploitation of our planet is fast bringing it and us to our knees.
This is why so many environmentalists won’t talk about reducing global warming by cutting back our use of fossil fuels and instead focus on “good green jobs”. They obviously think that this messaging approach is more appealing than asking for shared sacrifice.
Unfortunately, the latter approach is our only solution but it is generally treated like the 800 pound elephant in the room that no one will mention.

“AND she is right about this!” — No she isn’t; how incredibly foolish and ignorant. There’s are huge business opportunities in environmental cleanup. “so many environmentalists won’t talk about reducing global warming by cutting back our use of fossil fuels” — that’s utterly absurd. I’m with the Sierra Club and I can tell you that nothing is further from the truth.

If you were going to try to fairly compare this TEA Party to the original Boston Tea Party, these people would be the ones who would have been using it as an excuse to go out an kill every Native American in sight, and then dredge up the Tea Bags that were thrown overboard, and serve that polluted Tea to the general population… Those of US who are pissed off at what today’s TEA Partiers are doing and saying would have been the ones throwing it off in the first place.

Before the EPA existed, I remember there was a creek near my house that had orange water because a company dumped their debris in it. I was told that before that company came, people were able to swim in it. It’s my understanding that it is clean again. If companies were allowed to continue to dump their debris without any regulations, we wouldn’t have to worry about jobs as we wouldn’t have a planet that could sustain life.

I think we should follow her lead and start dumping toxic waste into streams and down caves again…Get that nasty EPA under control, forget about protecting innocent children and families…lets make big money by taking dangerous short cuts…who cares about what happens in 50 years, lets just kick that toxic can down the road…And we can conserve energy by turning off the lights and locking the doors on the EPA. WOW…and how many children does this woman have?
