While Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing backers in Israel and the U.S. constantly claim Israel has no partner for peace, it was the Likud government — on Netnayahu’s orders — that cut off recently revealed back-channel negotiations, according to reports in the Israeli press. At +972 Magazine, Israeli journalist Noam Sheizaf cites a Hebrew report today in the Israeli daily Maariv claiming that Palestinian Authority president Mahmood Abbas was on his way to Jordan for talks with Israeli president Shimon Peres when he learned that the meeting was canceled on direct orders from the prime minister’s office.
