U.N. Security Council Takes First Step In Palestinian Statehood Bid

The U.N. Security Council took the first step in the process that will accept or reject a Palestinian application for full statehood with the world body: moving the application into committee. Committees are limited to 35 days, but that limit can be waived. Officials with the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s executive committee have said excessive stalling could result in their taking the bid to the General Assembly, which cannot bestow full statehood rights but where the Palestinians enjoy overwhelming support.
