Syria’s foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem, warned countries yesterday against recognizing the Syrian National Council, a group dissidents formed last week designed to unite the opposition and overthrow Bashar al-Assad’s government. While the SNC is seeking formal international recognition, no country has yet to do so. “I am not interested in what they are trying to achieve,” Moallem said, “And we will adopt strict measures against any country that will recognize the illegitimate council.” Meanwhile, while some like Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) are calling for a no-fly zone in parts of Syria, last week, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance has “no intention whatsoever” of launching a Libya-style military campaign in Syria.
