U.S. Shuts Embassy In Syria

Senior State Department officials told CNN that the United States will close its embassy in Damascus. Officials for weeks had been considering shutting the embassy out of concerns that the Syrian government wasn’t doing enough to protect embassy personnel. Seventeen staff, including Ambassador Robert Ford, left for Jordan today. “The government is getting stretched beyond its ability to control the various elements of violence in the country,” one senior official said, adding, “This is a decision we never take lightly. Our embassies are a very important part of our diplomacy around the world.”
