Syria’s deputy oil minister appears in an online video announcing his defection, making him the highest ranking official to abandon President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The minister, Abdo Husameddine, said he was joining the opposition because of the government’s “brutal” crackdown against the opposition which has taken the lives of thousands of Syrians. “I do not want to end my life servicing the crimes of this regime,” Husameddine said.
