Annan: Syrian Regime Will Stop Fighting By April 12 Deadline

With prospects for peace in Syria looking bleak, the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan said today that the Syrian government has informed him that it will “cease all military fighting throughout Syrian territory” as of 6 a.m. Damascus time on Thursday. But Annan’s spokesperson said the Syrian foreign minister said in a letter the government reserves “the right to respond proportionately to any attacks carried out by armed terrorist groups against civilians, government forces or public and private property.”

U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice said Syria’s pledge has “little if any credibility.”
