Reuters is reporting that Syrian opposition sources are saying that Syria’s ambassador to Iraq has defected in protest against President Bashar al-Assad’s violent crackdown on regime opponents. “Nawaf al-Fares, who was closely linked to the security establishment, would be the first senior Syrian diplomat to defect,” Reuters reports.
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi tweeted:
Reliable sources have informed me of the defection of Nawaf Fares, the Syrian Ambassador to Iraq.
