NATO Says Syrian Military Fired More Scud-Type Missiles

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen confirmed Syria has again launched Scud-type missiles against opposition forces inside the country. Rasmussen cited the continued use of Scuds as a primary reason justifying NATO’s placement of Patriot missile defense batteries in Turkey. President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has recently begun using more dangerous and controversial weapons in its struggle against rebel forces. The New York Times reported today that cluster munitions were dropped on the small town of Marea in what has been characterized as an act of “collective punishment” against the civilian population for its support of the rebels.
