After Being Evicted, Occupy Atlanta Spends Night At MLK Center At Foot Of Gandhi Statue

Earlier this week, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed forcibly evicted Occupy Atlanta — which is based in the city with the nation’s worst income inequality — from its encampment at Woodruff Park.

Last night, the protesters, undeterred by Reed’s brash crackdown, sought refuge in a place where the city could not immediately evict them — the Martin Luther King Center in downtown Atlanta. The King Center, as it is known, is federal property, which means that the city does not have immediate jurisdiction over its grounds. The protesters pitched their tents at another symbolic site within the King Center, the statue of civil rights leader Mohandas Gandhi.

Soon after arriving at the MLK Center, the protesters were joined by civil rights legend Joe Beasley, who offered his words of support. The demonstrators moved on from the King Center this morning and say they have received several offers from private property owners to encamp at.
