Bill Maher Defends Rush Limbaugh Again: ‘A Guy Made A Bad Joke’

Bill Maher continued to diminish Rush Limbaugh’s sexist attacks on Sandra Fluke and attack liberals for overreacting. On his HBO show last night, Maher said that liberals should “put this in perspective… a guy made a bad joke.” He added in that in America “sometimes you’re made to feel uncomfortable.”

Actually, Limbaugh launched hateful attacks against Fluke seventy times over three days. You can watch all of Limbaugh’s attacks on Fluke here. He doesn’t appear to be joking.

Maher insisted that he was not, in fact, defending Limbaugh but “defending living in a country where people don’t have to be afraid that they might go out of the bounds for one minute. Do we all want to be talking like White House spokesmen?” Watch it:

Maher also framed the criticisms of Limbaugh as an attack on “free speech.” But the issue is not whether Limbaugh was free to say what he did about Sandra Fluke. Hundreds of thousands of people are asking advertisers and others if they want to continue to pay for Limbaugh’s speech. At least 98 major advertisers have said no and canceled their ads.

Maher also dismissed Limbaugh’s comments by noting that “no one died.” The same talking point was echoed by Tucker Carlson who argued, oddly, that we should cut Limbaugh some slack because Don King was convicted of manslaughter in 1966 and still has a career. Carlson, like Maher, has his own history of mysoginistic comments. Last year he tweeted, “Palin’s popularity falling in Iowa, but maintains lead to become supreme commander of Milfistan.” He later apologized.

Bill Maher Defends Rush Limbaugh

Last night on Twitter, Bill Maher defended Rush Limbaugh and attacked liberals for not accepting Limbaugh’s apology after he spent three days relentlessly attacking law student Sandra Fluke.

Notably, Limbaugh only apologized for “two words,” after attacking Fluke dozens of times. Among those liberals not satisifed with Limbaugh’s apology was Fluke herself, who said it didn’t “change anything.” Dozens of Limbaugh’s advertisers agreed and have announced they are pulling their ads after Limbaugh’s apology.

Here is Maher’s tweet:

Maher comes to the debate with his own baggage. Last March, he used an offensive sexist epithet to describe Sarah Palin. He’s also called Rep. Michele Bachmann and Palin “bimbos.”

Recently, Maher defended his sexist comments, stating “I sometimes called Sarah Palin a bad name. I don’t have sponsors, I’m on HBO.”

Bill Maher On Gay Rights: ‘This Country Has Changed’ | After cracking a few jokes about Rick Santorum’s social conservative positions, Bill Maher told Jay Leno last night that “the Republicans haven’t gotten the memo that this country has changed” in regards to gay rights. He pointed out that Americans have gotten a lot more comfortable because of the portrayals of gay characters on shows like Glee and Will & Grace. Watch it:

Bill Maher On Anti-Science Republicans: ‘Not One Believes Global Warming Is Real’

Last week, the Wonk Room published an exclusive analysis of the Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate, finding that only Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) supported action to fight global warming pollution. That Tuesday, Castle was defeated in his primary by Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell, who believes evolution is a myth and opposes stem-cell research. Yesterday, Bill Maher cited that report in a discussion with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, bemoaning the dominance of anti-science Republicans. After Matthews played a clip of O’Donnell warning in 2007 of “mice with fully functioning human brains” — evidently a mangled reference to a mouse with surgically constructed ear from cow cells grafted onto its back — Maher noted that the “real issue” is the Republican opposition to science:

MAHER: I don’t know, when I saw all this coverage of the witch stuff, I was laughing yesterday. Because that is not really important to the election. It is just a side show, as you would say. It was funny. I don’t think it should hurt her. It was something she was doing in high school. But when you think this about scientific issues facing this nation, people could be really helped by stem cell research. That’s a real issue. There are 37 Republican candidates for the Senate. Not one believes global warming is real and man made. Except the one, Mike Castle, the guy she defeated in Delaware.

MATTHEWS: That is serious.

MAHER: That’s a real issue.

MATTHEWS: They don’t believe in evolution, they don’t believe in science, all the evidence of science they all hold up as somehow elitist thinking.

Watch it:

The threat in November to science-based policy is very real, as a Republican surge of conspiracy theorists, polluter apologists, and anti-medicine activists plan to take back the House and the Senate.
