Romney Adviser Trashes U.K. Prime Minister: He Lacks Experience, ‘Not Very Skillful’

When asked during a debate late last year about his policy toward Israel, Mitt Romney said it’s “very simple. You start off by saying that you don’t allow an inch of space to exist between you and your friends and your allies.” Claiming (without basis) that President Obama publicly “threw Israel under the bus,” Romney added, “if you disagree with an ally, you talk about it privately. But in public, you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your allies.”

But it doesn’t appear that Romney, nor his staff, feel the same way about America’s European allies. Back in March, Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron had a friendly visit in Washington and the Guardian reported yesterday that the Romney campaign didn’t like it too much:

Senior advisers to Mitt Romney have bitterly criticised David Cameron’s recent White House “love-in” with Barack Obama before Romney’s first visit to London for the opening of the Olympic Games.

Referring to Cameron’s highly flattering toast to Obama during a banquet given in the prime minister’s honour when he visited Washington in March, a senior aide said: “You don’t take sides in an election year“.

The aide said that Cameron’s visit to the White House showed a “lack of experience,” that he was “not very skillful” and that the visit “infringed” on the U.S.-U.K. special relationship.

It seems that trashing America’s European allies is a hallmark of the Romney campaign. “We’re becoming far more like a European social welfare state and people don’t want to see that,” the presumptive GOP nominee says regularly. And in his New Hampshire primary victory speech back in January, Romney had particularly harsh words for Europe, suggesting that European countries aren’t “free and prosperous“:

[Obama] wants to turn America into a European-style entitlement society. We want to ensure that we remain a free and prosperous land of opportunity.

This President takes his inspiration from the capitals of Europe; we look to the cities and small towns of America. [...]

I want you to remember when our White House reflected the best of who we are, not the worst of what Europe has become.

And in a recent speech given at a private fundraiser, Romney said he wants to restore “the principles of liberty and freedom and entreprenuership and innovativeness” to the United States, as opposed to countries in Europe, which are becoming weak by “sacrificing their military.”

Romney’s hypocrisy on keeping conversations with allies private doesn’t stop with his and his campaign’s public criticism of America’s European friends. Last month, the Romney campaign called on Obama to “release the notes and transcripts of all his meetings with world leaders so the American people can be satisfied that he’s not promising to sell out the country’s interests after the election is over.”

Conservatives Urge Cameron To Abandon Marriage Equality Push | Conservative lawmakers in Britain are speaking out against Prime Minister David Cameron’s push for a measure legalizing same-sex marriage, and reports indicate that “Chief Whip Patrick McLoughlin has privately assured anxious Tory backbenchers that the Prime Minister’s same-sex marriage plan will ‘not come to a vote’.” Lawmakers are also warning Cameron “that a Tory rebellion in the Commons would eclipse last year’s EU referendum revolt” and “are reporting an ‘avalanche’ of protests from Conservative supporters over the gay marriage initiative.” Cameron has previously said that “I support gay marriage because I am a conservative” and has tried to reassure religious groups that marriage equality can co-exist with Christianity.

British Prime Minister Cameron Says He’s Happy To Release His Tax Returns

Last week, Mitt Romney campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom explained that his candidate will not be releasing any more of his tax returns beyond the 2010 return and 2011 estimate that he has already made public. Romney only released the returns after heavy pressure.

Across the Atlantic, another conservative is also feeling the heat to release his tax returns. UK Prime Minister David Cameron, however, said that he is very happy to make his finances public:

David Cameron is prepared to publish details of his tax returns after agreeing with George Osborne that the most senior members of the cabinet should be open about their financial affairs.

The prime minister is said to be relaxed and happy with the idea of publishing his tax returns, following the example set last week by Boris Johnson, the mayor of London.

It’s unclear how many years of returns Cameron intends to release. Chancellor George Osborne also plans to release his returns.

Earlier this week, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) criticized Romney for not releasing more of his returns. As the Washington Post reported this week, Romney’s existing returns don’t give a complete picture of his wealth, as they only list the investment funds that he owns, not the underlying assets in those funds. As the Post put it, Romney “has taken advantage of an obscure exception in federal ethics laws to avoid disclosing the nature and extent of his holdings.”

Romney’s father George Romney, when he ran for President, released 12 years of returns (and paid an effective tax rate more than twice as high as his son). Mitt Romney also provided 23 years of returns to the McCain campaign in 2008, when he was being vetted as a possible vice presidential nominee.

David Cameron Thanked For Advancing Marriage Equality In Front Of Obama | A guest at the White House’s state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron last month thanked Cameron for supporting marriage equality within earshot of President Obama, the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart reports. “Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for all that you’re doing for marriage equality in Great Britain,” the guest said to Cameron, who was standing to Obama’s right. “With a gesture towards the president, Cameron replied, ‘It takes a conservative to convince a liberal about gay marriage.’ Cameron, who is trying to advance same-sex marriage in Britain, recently explained, “I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative, I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.” (HT: OnTopMagazine)

David Cameron: Marriage Equality Can Co-Exist With ‘The Values Of Christianity’ | Conservative British Prime Minister David Cameron tried to convince religious groups to back his push for civil same-sex marriage during an Easter reception yesterday. Cameron emphasized that “change [is] what happens in a register office, not what happens in a church” and stressed that houses of worship would not be required to perform unions that violate their faiths. The Prime Minister also reassured the groups that marriage equality can co-exist in the public square with religion: “I think there’s something of a fightback going on, and we should welcome that,” he added. “The values of the Bible, the values of Christianity are the values that we need.”

David Cameron: ‘I Support Gay Marriage Because I Am A Conservative’ | Conservatives in Britain are expanding the definition of conservatism to include equality for gays and lesbians, the Washington Post reports, as Prime Minister David Cameron pushes through a same-sex marriage law. “I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative,’’ Cameron said in a recent landmark speech on the issue. “I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.’’ Mindful of the growing social acceptance for gay people, Cameron has gradually evolved towards defining gay rights as human rights and has hosted a summit on homophobia in professional soccer “and officially apologized for Thatcher-era antigay policies, calling the party’s previous stance ‘a mistake.’” One political operative explained the shift this way: “The electorate was not seeing us as a viable alternative in a modern world. But David Cameron came along and changed all that. This is a different Conservative Party now, one that is fully in favor of equal rights. I think the Republicans could learn a lot from us in how to appeal to the center, without whose votes a party cannot hope to win.’’

European Court Of Human Rights Finds That Same-Sex Marriage Is Not A Human Right

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that same-sex marriage is not a human right and concluded that “if gay couples are allowed to marry, any church that offers weddings will be guilty of discrimination if it declines to marry same-sex couples.” The decision throws a wrench into the British government’s plan to legalize marriage equality, as it has maintained that “no church would have to conduct gay weddings.”

“The European Convention on Human Rights does not require member states’ governments to grant same-sex couples access to marriage,” the court found in a case “involving a lesbian couple in a civil partnership who complained the French courts would not allow them to adopt a child as a couple.” It argued that civil unions are comparable to marriage:

‘With regard to married couples, the court considers that in view of the social, personal, and legal consequences of marriage, the applicants’ legal situation could not be said to be comparable to that of married couples.’

Opponents of extending marriage to gays and lesbians have already seized on the ruling, arguing that “The ruling from the ECHR will embolden those whose concerns about same-sex marriage and adoption are not inspired by personal hatred and animosity, but by a genuine concern for the well-being of children and the welfare of society.” Earlier this week, “Muslim and Sikh groups said legalizing gay unions was ‘unnecessary and unhelpful‘ after Christian leaders had spoken out against the plans.”

‘Because I’m A Conservative’: Why U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron Supports Marriage Equality | U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has reiterated his support for marriage equality, explaining that his conservative politics inform his position:

CAMERON: I once stood before a Conservative conference and said it shouldn’t matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and another man. You applauded me for that. Five years on, we’re consulting on legalising gay marriage. And to anyone who has reservations, I say: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. So I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I’m a Conservative.

U.K.’s Conservative Government May Come Out In Favor Of Marriage Equality | The U.K. government may come out in support of same-sex marriage tomorrow, Business Insider is reporting. “Tim Montgomorie of Conservative Home appears to have confirmed the rumors, while James Chapman of the Daily Mail tweets that the intervention is coming after a ‘personal intervention’ from Prime Minister David Cameron.” The announcement is likely to occur at the Liberal Democrat conference tomorrow. Cameron had reached out to gay voters during the 2010 election, but came under criticism for stopping an interview at which he fumbled an answer about the Tories’ voting record on gay equality and later left out a reference to gay people in a speech kick-starting the Tories’ election campaign.
