Republicans Demand GOP Congressman Apologize For Calling Latinos ‘Wetbacks’

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) is catching flack even from his colleagues for his casual use of a racial slur against Latinos in an interview this week. Young was reminiscing about his family ranch in California, where they would “hire 50 to 60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes.” Young seemed confused at the backlash, saying he “meant no disrespect,” but stopped short of actually apologizing for the remark.

Young’s comment has been swiftly disowned by Democrats as well as his fellow Republicans, who have stressed the need to win over the fast-growing Latino voter bloc through greater tolerance and outreach.

1. SEN. JOHN CORNYN (R-TX): “Migrant workers come to America looking for opportunity and a way to provide a better life for their families. They do not come to this country to hear ethnic slurs and derogatory language from elected officials. The comments used by Rep. Young do nothing to elevate our party, political discourse or the millions who come here looking for economic opportunity.”

2. HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER JOHN BOEHNER (R-OH): “Congressman Young’s remarks were offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds. I don’t care why he said itthere’s no excuse and it warrants an immediate apology.

3. RNC CHAIRMAN REINCE PRIEBUS: “The words used by Representative Young emphatically do not represent the beliefs of the Republican Party.”

4. REP. RUBEN HINOJOSA (D-TX), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus: “Shame on Rep. Don Young. It is deeply disheartening that in 2013 we are forced to have a discussion about a member of Congress using such hateful words and racial slurs…When elected officials use racial slurs, it sets back our nation and sets back legislators who are seriously working toward real, bipartisan solutions. Rep. Young says that he was just using the language he was accustomed to as he grew up, but there is no excuse for ignorance. He has served alongside Hispanics in Congress since 1973, so he should know terms like “wetback” have never been acceptable. As the Republican minority outreach efforts develop, I’d advise their strategists to list “don’t say racial slurs like ‘wetback’ ” as a bedrock for their messaging.

5. DREAM ACTION COALITION: “While senseless rhetoric used by Republicans is hardly surprising, what is surprising is that the Gang of 8 leaders working on immigration reform are not publicly condemning these remarks…As senators that come from states with large latino and immigrant communities, Sen. Schumer and Sen. Rubio must condemn these insensible remarks to demonstrate their commitment to fixing our broken immigration system and demonstrate neither party will tolerate insulting remarks against Latinos, immigrants, or any community in our country.”

6. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R-AZ): “Don Young’s comments were offensive and have no place in our Party or in our nation’s discourse. He should apologize immediately.”

Despite constant exhortations to reach out to minorities and young people, the GOP has continued to be plagued by racial intolerance. Even as lawmakers rushed to disavow Young’s offensive slur, 38 Republicans and 1 Democrat introduced a House bill to make English the official language of the United States.

Update

By Friday afternoon, Young had issued a full apology:

“I apologize for the insensitive term I used during an interview in Ketchikan, Alaska. There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words. That word, and the negative attitudes that come with it, should be left in the 20th century, and I’m sorry that this has shifted our focus away from comprehensive immigration reform.”

NRA-Funded Congressmen Leading The Charge Against Gun Violence Prevention

Since the Federal Elections Commission began tracking campaign contributions, the NRA Political Victory Fund (the National Rifle Association’s political action committee) has distributed more than $19 million to federal candidates. The top career recipients of that money who are currently in the U.S. House have been, unsurprisingly, among the most vocal opponents of any new gun violence prevention legislation advanced in the aftermath of the school shooting at Newton, Connecticut.

A ThinkProgress analysis of data from Political MoneyLine reveals that the top 12 House beneficiaries of NRA money include 10 Republicans and two Democrats. While neither of the two Democrats, Reps. Nick Rahall (D-WV) and John Dingell (D-MI) have embraced President Obama’s proposals for bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, both have at least expressed an openness to requiring criminal background checks before all gun purchases. The Republicans, however, have either led the charge against any new gun restrictions or have avoided taking any position. All 10 have received an “A” or “A+” rating from the NRA.

They are:

1. REP. DON YOUNG (R-AK) — AT LEAST $107,425

Young said last month, “I have serious concerns with the statements made today by President Obama and take issue with the President’s call for banning aesthetically altered rifles and shotguns and certain magazines. This is a dangerous limitation on a family’s ability to defend itself in the event they’re threatened. Perhaps in cities where the police response time tends to be more rapid, it is easy to forget how important a firearm is to keeping loved ones safe. However, in rural America where law enforcement is many miles away, a semi-automatic weapon could mean the difference between life and death.”

2. REP. STEVE CHABOT (R-OH) — AT LEAST $65,950

Chabot said last month, “I have serious concerns regarding many of the president’s gun control proposals. Further, I am disturbed the White House bypassed the American peoples’ elected representatives in Congress and implemented much of their agenda by executive order.”

3. REP. PETE SESSIONS (R-TX) — AT LEAST $64,000

Sessions said last month, “Going forward, I will continue to tirelessly defend Americans’ right to bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment. In doing so, I will fight against the President’s unrelenting attempts to bypass Congress and further erode our Constitution.”

4. REP. LEE TERRY (R-NE) — AT LEAST $59,650

Terry said in a January radio interview, “We’ve seen several assaults on the constitution. This is just another one.” He said President Obama’s efforts are “unconstitutional,” adding “These aren’t going to curb the real issue. The real issue is someone with mental health issues gets a gun… these aren’t going to solve that problem… How many bullets you have in a magazine ultimately doesn’t solve any problem.”

5. REP. BOB GOODLATTE (R-VA) — AT LEAST $57,250

Goodlatte, who chairs the House Committee on the Judiciary, told CQ Roll Call in December that he does not favor tightening controls on firearms. “We’re going to take a look at what happened there and what can be done to help avoid it in the future, but gun control is not going to be something that I would support,” he said. Any gun violence prevention measures would likely require Judiciary Committee approval.

6. REP. JOE BARTON (R-TX) — AT LEAST $57,248

Barton said last month, “The Obama Administration’s plan amounts to a power grab. I will fight any legislation that further restricts qualified owners’ access to guns. I am also against the President using executive orders to circumvent the will of the people and infringe on the constitutional rights of my constituents. The right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment, and when I took my oath of office I swore to defend the Constitution. I believe that violent crime must be reduced, but I will not support measures that infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.”

7. REP. HAL ROGERS (R-KY) — AT LEAST $51,725

Rogers has apparently said little publicly since Sandy Hook, but did say in December, “As we search for understanding and gain minute-by-minute explanations of how an unfathomable tragedy of this magnitude occurred, we must be judicious in our response.”

8. REP. TOM LATHAM (R-IA) — AT LEAST $49,750

Latham said last month, “while I always support having a vigorous and thorough debate on the important issues facing our nation, I continue to believe that we must ensure any Congressional or executive action pertaining to firearm regulations should not erode the rights we are guaranteed in our Constitution.

9. REP. KEN CALVERT (R-CA) — AT LEAST $48,400

Calvert has reportedly refused to even discuss gun violence prevention until a full investigation of the Newtown shootings is completed.

10. REP. JOHN BOEHNER (R-OH) — AT LEAST $47,800

Boehner, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has dismissed calls for quick House action on gun violence. “When the vice president’s recommendations come forward, we’ll certainly take them into consideration,” he said in December, “but at this point I think our hearts and souls ought to be to think about those victims in this horrible tragedy.”

After receiving more than $600,000 total over the years from the organization, expect these ten Republicans to be among the fiercest opponents of even the most commonsense measures to prevent future tragedy.

Must-See Video of Rep. Don Young (R-AK) Bullying a Witness: “I Can Call You Anything I Want…. You Just Be quiet!”

By Don Shelby, in a re-post

On Nov. 18 the celebrated historian, Dr. Douglas Brinkley, testified before the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee. The committee was taking testimony on another congressional effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil exploration and drilling.

Brinkley was there to suggest that the ANWR be designated a national monument, preserved and protected. Brinkley knows about conservation. Among his award-winning publications and best-selling books is “Wilderness Warrior” about Theodore Roosevelt’s environmental policies. His most recent book, “The Quiet World,” traces the history of Alaska’s wilderness. He’s currently writing a new history on the conservation movement in America.

After Brinkley delivered his testimony, Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, walked into the hearing late. Please watch this short clip of what happened:

By way of full disclosure, Dr. Brinkley is a friend of mine, but had Dr. Brinkley been a stranger to me, I would still be mortified that a United States congressman would treat a guest of the House in such a fashion. I hope this piece of video is seen by as many Americans as possible. I shouldn’t like people in other countries to see it. We still have an image to uphold in the world. Young makes it look like the most powerful nation on earth is run by the inmates of the asylum.

You may also notice that Dr. Brinkley doesn’t suffer fools gladly. I talked to him about the confrontation. He told me: “I felt like I needed to hold my own against them. I feel good about it.”

He continued: “I’m a historian and I read a lot of testimony. It is important to me to have an accurate record. I thought I needed to set the record straight for Congressman Young. My name is not Dr. Rice, it is Dr. Brinkley.”

That is certainly part of it. It is likely, as well, that Brinkley had studied the history of Congressman Young before he arrived at the hearing. Brinkley told me he knew that Congressman Young, at another hearing, had waved a walrus penis bone at Mollie Beattie, the incoming chief of the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Don Young Bullies Witness: ‘I Can Call You Anything I Want!’ ‘You Be Quiet!’ ‘Pontifigurds!’

At a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on the dangers of drilling the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Rep. Don Young (R-AK) exploded with rage. The hearing, with witnesses requested by the Democratic minority, was scheduled by Republicans for Friday afternoon. “I call it garbage, Dr. Rice,” Young said, addressing his comments to Dr. Douglas Brinkley, a historian at Rice University. When Brinkley corrected his name, Young grew even more apoplectic, saying, “I can call you anything I want if you sit in that chair.”

YOUNG: If you ever want want to see an exercise in futility … That side has already made up its mind and this side has already made up its mind. I call it garbage, Dr. Rice, it comes from the mouth –

BRINKLEY: It’s Dr. Brinkley. Rice is a university –

YOUNG: Well, okay, I can call you anything I want if you sit in that chair. You just be quiet! You be quiet!

Watch it:

After Young’s irate outburst, Committee chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA) castigated Dr. Brinkley for interrupting the Alaska congressman and disrupting the “comity” of the hearing.

“The Arctic plain is really nothing,” Young continued, calling Dr. Brinkley “elitist.” “You can go on all the pontifigurds you want . . . I’m really pissed.”

Some people love money more than their homeland or where they live,” Dr. Brinkley said later, rebuking Young for his hatred of the undrilled Alaskan wilderness.

Rep. Don Young says the Gulf oil gusher is ‘not an environmental disaster.’

An oil-soaked dead dolphin found in LouisianaLast week, Obama administration officials admitted that the Deepwater Horizon blowout is the worst oil disaster in American history, exceeding the Exxon Valdez spill, as they estimated that the gusher had spewed between 15 and 40 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Around the same time, however, Rep. Don Young (R-AK) declared that the oil pumping into the Gulf is “not an environmental disaster”:

Young said: “This is not an environmental disaster, and I will say that again and again because it is a national phenomena. Oil has seeped into this ocean for centuries, will continue to do it. During World War II there was over 10 million barrels of oil spilt from ships, and no natural catastrophe. … We will lose some birds, we will lose some fixed sealife, but overall it will recover.”

Last month, Gulf Coast marine scientists told The Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson that the ecological impact of the accident will be “devastating” because “oil’s bad for everything.” The massive amount of oil threatens several endangered species, coral reefs, and the fragile ecosystem of Louisiana’s coastline. The exact impact of the oil is more uncertain than in other spills because “for the most part, researchers have studied the aftermath of surface spills. The Deepwater Horizon blowout occurred at 5,000 feet, dispensing crude oil from seafloor to surface.” “This is uncharted territory in terms of assessing the effects of a spill from a deep well like this,” Judy McDowell, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts told the Christian Science Monitor.

Rep. Don Young racks up $1.2 million in legal fees this year.

A review of campaign filings through July 2008 conducted by Roll Call finds that “a quarter of House lawmakers reported spending on legal fees in the first half of 2008.” The review found that Rep. Don Young (R-AK), “spent the most on legal costs in the current cycle, shelling out more than $1.2 million.” “Prosecutors have reportedly been looking at whether Young took bribes, illegal gratuities or unreported gifts from Veco,” an Alaskan oil services company with close ties to indicted Sen. Ted Stevens.

Don Young claims he received non-existent award from tax watchdog group.

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) has launched a new radio campaign ad claiming that he received a “Hero of the Taxpayer” award from the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS). However, TCS Vice President Steve Ellis pointed out that the award doesn’t exist:

We don’t even have a ‘Hero of the Taxpayer’ award to start out. But we did scrub through our records and we found out that we had given him an award– the ‘Golden Fleece’ award in 2003 for the Bridge to Nowhere.

Taxpayers for Common Sense has told Young “that we have no such award,” and told Young to “immediately stop using it in advertisements and publicly issue a correction.” Perhaps Young is confusing it with his “Hero of the Taxpayer” award from Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist’s right-wing anti-tax organization.

Update

In a statement to Taxpayers for Common Sense, Young’s spokesperson claims they “credited the wrong organization” and that they “apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
