Republicans Seize On IRS Scandal To Smear Obamacare

(Credit: Washington Post)

That didn’t take long.

A mere four days after news broke that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had improperly targeted conservative political groups for scrutiny, GOP Sen. Dean Heller (NV) is threatening to introduce legislation that would “deny the IRS funds to hire new agents to implement Obamacare.” The bill would effectively make it impossible for the agency to provide millions of Americans with federal subsidies to buy the very health coverage they are required to have under the law.

Heller argues that this extreme measure may be necessary in light of the unfolding IRS scandal, echoing a growing trope among conservative politicians and right-wing commentators. Since last Friday, big-name conservatives including House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), former presidential contender Newt Gingrich, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and various right-wing media outlets have questioned whether or not the IRS can be trusted to implement Obamacare. The implication is that if the IRS singles out conservative political groups, what’s to stop them from snooping through Americans’ private health care information or imposing fines on companies they don’t like?

This is a reduction to the absurd. The IRS has been collecting health care taxes and compliance information from employers for decades. In fact, it has to, seeing as most Americans receive their insurance through their employer and the employer health insurance tax credit is the single largest tax credit in the federal budget. That system seems to have worked without gross invasions of medical privacy since the the 1950s, and there’s no reason to assume anything will change in 2014.

Furthermore, officials with the Department of Health and Human Services have actually spoken out about the importance of protecting Americans’ medical data, and the Obama Administration has taken action to ensure it. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act widens existing privacy and data-security protections on patients’ protected health information as more of their health records are digitized. The 2009 stimulus bill also included updates to HIPAA rules that limit “the use of patient-identifiable medical data for marketing.”

The IRS requires information from individuals and businesses that will help them determine whether Americans have insurance, and how much help they need from the government to be able to buy it. Some critics have latched onto the fact that the IRS will have access to more household income data than before when making those determinations, and that it can share this information with the statewide Obamacare marketplaces and government health agencies. But it would be impossible to implement the law without at least some data-sharing — and without it, many Americans could not receive the benefits they are due. Legislative threats such as Heller’s might make for good politics — but in reality, all it would do is prevent the 26 million Americans expected to gain insurance through the Obamacare marketplaces from receiving the tax credits that would allow them to afford it.

Members Of Congress Introduce Legislation Based On Fringe Conspiracy Theory

Two Republican members of Congress introduced legislation on Friday that would limit the amount of ammunition the government is able to purchase at a given time. The bill is a response to far-right conspiracy theories that the government is “stockpiling” ammunition, either to wage a war against the American people or to dry up the ammunition market so average citizens can’t buy bullets.

Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK), and Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) will put forth the Ammunition Management for More Obtainability Act (or, AMMO) Act in both the House and Senate. The bill would require executive branch agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to maintain ammunition levels below the average monthly amounts that the agencies had before Obama took office.

According to a joint press release from Lucas and Inhofe, “The legislation would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a report on the purchasing of ammunition by federal agencies, except the Department of Defense, and its affect on the supply of ammunition available to the public”:

“President Obama has been adamant about curbing law-abiding Americans’ access and opportunities to exercise their Second Amendment rights,” said Inhofe. “One way the Obama Administration is able to do this is by limiting what’s available in the market with federal agencies purchasing unnecessary stockpiles of ammunition. As the public learned in a House committee hearing this week, the Department of Homeland Security has two years worth of ammo on hand and allots nearly 1,000 more rounds of ammunition for DHS officers than is used on average by our Army officers. The AMMO Act of 2013 will enforce transparency and accountability of federal agencies’ ammunition supply while also protecting law-abiding citizens access to these resources.”

For members of Congress whose interests have generally aligned with those of gun and ammunition manufacturers, this legislation isn’t smart economics; limiting the ability of the government to buy ammunition will remove a key consumer, drying up demand and causing manufacturers to take a sales hit. Similarly, Lucas and Inhofe’s claim that the government “limit[s] what’s available in the market” if it buys up more ammunition reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of basic economics. If demand for ammunition increases, ammunition producers will increase production in order to meet this demand.

Last week, another Republican representative, Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) brought up the “stockpiling” conspiracy in a hearing with DHS Sec. Janet Napolitano, who said it was “inherently unbelievable that those statements would be made.”

The theory comes from fringe websites like Alex Jones’s Infowars, but have been given a platform by Drudge, a site that commonly peddles unfounded conspiracy theories. Even some far-right sites have taken it upon themselves to debunk the claim that DHS is “stockpiling” weapons. Brietbart.com described the theories as “based more on panic than fact.”

Congressman Invokes Conspiracy Theory In Hearing, Citing Drudge Report As ‘Reputable News Source’

In a House hearing Thursday morning, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was sidetracked from her testimony on the DHS budget when Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) asked her to respond to an online conspiracy theory about the DHS supposedly stockpiling ammo for an attack on Americans. Duncan argued this was more credible than mere “Internet rumors” because the Drudge Report, a popular conservative aggregator, said it was true:

DUNCAN: You know, when Forbes Magazine or Drudge or some reputable news sources start to repeat the numbers…the numbers cease to become Internet rumors and they start having some credibility. I just ask, why was there a long delay or silence from the DHS for a period of time, almost three months, before y’all came forward saying these numbers aren’t correct, these are the actual facts. Why was there a delay or silence from your department?

NAPOLITANO: Well I don’t know about that, that there was that kind of delay, but I will tell you we found it so inherently unbelievable that those statements would be made it was hard to ascribe credibility to them. I don’t know if I’d put Forbes and Drudge in the same sentence.

Duncan seems to be mistaking traffic for credibility. Every day, Drudge directs massive numbers of visitors to conspiracy theory sites like WND, a birther site, and Infowars, which most recently claimed the Boston Marathon explosion was a “false flag” operation orchestrated by the government to take away freedom. Napolitano is a favorite target of Drudge, who calls her “Big Sis” and frequently links to conspiracy theories about DHS. Last year, Drudge promoted claims that Napolitano’s leadership had led to a “same sex takeover” of the DHS dominated by a “lesbian cabal.”

While Drudge’s endorsement can elevate fringe conspiracy theories into mainstream discourse, the website has hardly built up credibility. Last year, Drudge prominently featured at least 10 bogus stories, often racial attacks against Obama, that other media outlets dutifully picked up.

The debunked theory Duncan invoked in the hearing claims the DHS had ordered 2,700 mine-resistant vehicles and 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition over the next 5 years. Conservative radio host and Infowars founder Alex Jones warned that the DHS was “gearing up for huge wars” and warned of “an arms race against the American people.” In fact, the DHS has used 16 such vehicles since 2008, when they inherited them for free from the Defense Department. The 2,700 figure came from an order by the U.S. Marine Corps. The ammo was part of a “strategic sourcing contract” that allows the DHS to get low prices by buying in bulk. Most will go to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while the rest will be used to train law enforcement officers in target practice. Even Fox News and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) dismissed the hysteria, noting the amount of ordered ammo is actually lower than in previous years.

It’s no surprise that Duncan is a credulous Drudge devotee; last week, he attacked an effort to expand background checks for gun purchases online or at gun shows because he thought the government was planning a systematic slaughter akin to the Rwandan genocide. The confiscation theory, also pushed by Drudge, goes hand in hand with the baseless idea that the DHS is readying itself to attack Americans.

Nor is Duncan the only Republican lawmaker to buy into Drudge-promoted conspiracy theories. In January, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) confronted then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with a bogus accusation that the CIA was secretly smuggling guns from Libya through Turkey to arm Syrian rebels.

Parroting Conspiracy Theorist, Drudge Compares Obama To Hitler And Stalin

Infowars.com founder and conspiracy guru Alex Jones is enjoying a boatload of publicity after his unhinged appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight on Monday evening. Jones compared President Obama to several dictators during the interview and called for a revolt. His moment in the news cycle appears to be winding down, though he now claims he is being followed by “crackhead cops”. But Jones has one prominent devotee who has faithfully promoted his screeds: Matt Drudge.

On Wednesday, the immensely popular Drudge Report helpfully echoed Jones’ comparison of Obama to Hitler and Stalin a couple days after the conspiracy theorist went on his televised rant about guns:

Morgan invited Jones on the show to discuss Jones’ petition to deport the British host for his gun control advocacy, but the interview quickly devolved into a bizarre, explosive diatribe about tyranny. Jones ranted:

Hitler took the guns! Stalin took the guns! Mao took the guns! Fidel Castro took the guns! Hugo Chavez took the guns! And I’m here to tell you that 1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms!

While Alex Jones is generally dismissed as a conspiracy theorist who cannot be taken seriously, the Drudge Report is a favorite website of political pundits and conservative politicians. However, Drudge regularly posts links to Jones’ fringe theories, from the soundly debunked claim that Obama was not born in the US, to the less well known theory that the president once secretly worked for the CIA in Pakistan. A ThinkProgress study in July found 184 links to Alex Jones’ websites in just one year. Because of Drudge’s clout with the mainstream media, Jones has been able to take advantage of a much broader audience than he ever could manage on his own.

Drudge Promotes Conspiracy Site Warning That Black People Will Riot If Romney Wins

The Drudge Report, Mitt Romney’s favorite website, is stirring up another race-baiting conspiracy theory. Since Friday, Drudge has linked to two articles on conspiracy site Infowars.com warning of “massive riots” of black people attacking white people should Mitt Romney win the election.

Infowars excitedly posted the second article, above, after their first one “was picked up by the Drudge Report over the weekend and has since gone viral.” Drudge linked to the second story on Monday.

The Infowars story from Monday collects 11 tweets — all from accounts with African American avatars — talking about rioting if Obama loses the election. Infowars claims they only included 11 because “there are simply too many to track.”

If obama dont get re-elected & romney wins .. on life every white persons getting pistol whipped and im startin a riot.

“If Obama don’t win lets start a riot so Romney know what he’s getting himself into.”

“You know you ain’t shit if you gotta “MAKE” Mafukas vote for ROMNEY ! …. Mannnn OBAMA better get back in office . Or BLACK FOLKS will riot.”

“If Romney wins im goin on a rampage.”

“If Mitt Romney wins the election I think its our duties as Black folks to riot and fuck shit up.

“If every action IS met with an equal and opposite reaction ..what should workers do to employers if Romney’s elected? #Riot in the streets!!”

“If Romney becomes president let’s all start a riot.”

“I Heard Mitt Romney , Tryna Take Away Food Stamps , If He Do .”IMA START A RIOT , IMA START A RIOT.”

“If romney wins, imma start a mf’n riot! Rns.”

The original Infowars story cited right-wing blog Twitchy, which compiled more black people talking about rioting on Twitter. As these sites have limited audiences, a Drudge link can explode their traffic and circulates their otherwise fringe theories.

As the election looms closer, right-wing groups and bloggers have amped up their racially-charged attacks on President Obama, such as in a Tea Party ad falsely accusing Obama of giving poor minorities phones. The Drudge Report has led the charge, most recently with an old video, condoned by the Romney campaign, meant to stoke fears that Obama is inciting aggression against white people.

10 Totally Fake Stories Bannered By Drudge This Year

Matt Drudge continues to capture the attention of the polical media “because of his brand recognition and, in 2012, because he has a direct line to the Romney campaign.”

But Drudge has used this position to continually mislead the public and the media. Tuesday night’s “bombshell” was just one of many recent examples. Here are 10 completely fake banner stories by Drudge in 2012:

1. Obama proposed to “repeat” auto bailout for every industry in America

Obama just didn’t say that. He said he wanted to bring back manufacturing jobs to every industry. You can read the transcript.

2. Obama “admits fabricating” his girlfriend in his memoir

As the Atlantic reported: “Obama is clear at the start of the book that certain characters are composites, writing, ‘For the sake of compression, some of the characters that appear are composites of people I’ve known, and some events appear out of precise chronology.’”

3. New evidence that Obama was “born in Kenya”

It was actually just an error in a pamphlet produced by his literary agent’s assistant.

In New ‘Bombshell’ Video, Obama Criticizes Federal Response To Hurricane Katrina

All day, the right-wing media have teased an “explosive” new video that exposes the “real” Barack Obama. The video turned out to be a speech from June 2007 at Hampton University, which was widely reported at the time. The full transcript of his prepared remark has been available for years.

The “explosive” news, according to the Daily Caller, is that Obama briefly deviated from his prepared remarks to comment on Hurricane Katrina. Obama said the federal government should do more to rebuild New Orleans, including waiving some requirements of the Stafford Act as the federal government did after 9/11 and Hurricane Andrew. Fox News, apparently, thinks this statement is outrageous and controversial. Here’s a screen shot from Sean Hannity’s show, which featured the video:

Drudge bills Obama’s 2007 remarks as a “race speech” because of the suggestion that the rebuilding of Katrina is connected to a history of racial discrimination. There was another President who made the same connection, George W. Bush:

That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action. So let us restore all that we have cherished from yesterday and let us rise above the legacy of inequality. When the streets are rebuilt, there should be many new businesses, including minority-owned businesses, along those streets.

During his Hampton University speech, Obama also recognized his former pastor, Jerimah Wright. Video of those comments has been available since at least 2008.

Update

CBS News’ Jan Crawford follows Drudge’s lead, says Obama’s comments about Katrina have news value.

The Truth About The Obama Phone

On Thursday, the Drudge Report splashed a video of an undentified woman who claims to have recieved a free “Obama Phone.”

The video has captured the attention of the right online, who see it as proof that Obama supporters are dependent on government. On his show today, Rush Limbaugh weighed in:

So these are the people that don’t like Romney because of what he said about 47%? No, these are the 47%!… She knows. She knows how to get this free Obama phone. She knows everything about it. She may not know who George Washington is or Abraham Lincoln, but she knows how to get an Obama phone.

Thousands of conservatives are on Twitter, telling jokes about the #ObamaPhone.

There is one problem with the Obama Phone: It doesn’t exist.

Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.

The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.

Drudge Promotes Romney Anti-Mideast Peace Story With Photo Of An Arab Child Holding A Toy Gun

Mother Jones released a video today that shows Mitt Romney saying “there’s just no way” to achieve Middle East peace. “The pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish,” Romney said, adding, “we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.” The popular right-wing news aggregator the Drudge Report picked up the story, and here’s the photo the website chose to include::

Credit for the photo belongs to the Associated Press, which described it as follows: “A boy holds a toy gun during a protest about a film ridiculing Islam’s Prophet Muhammad in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh near Sidon, Lebanon, Friday, Sept. 14, 2012.”

Senator Rand Paul Touts False Claim From ’9/11 Truth’ Conspiracy Site

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is no stranger to extreme positions or conspiratorial thinking. But Paul sunk to a new low last night, using his Senate Twitter account to promote a false report from one of the world’s most noxious conspiracy websites.

Paul appeared amused by an article on infowars.com suggesting the National Weather Service is stockpiling ammunition:

This story is false (a point that Business Insider, who also linked to the story, should correct). In reality, the ammunition was ordered by the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement, but a clerical error in the paperwork indicated otherwise. Worse, the article that Paul linked to was published on the homepage of what the Anti-Defamation League calls “The Conspiracy King.”

Alex Jones, the popular radio host who runs InfoWars, routinely traffics in outlandish and pernicious conspiracy theories. Jones is an unapologetic 9/11 Truther who believes that something called the Bilderberg Group (which purportedly controls President Obama) is plotting to take over the United States while Federal Emergency Management Agency is planning to put Americans in concentration camps. Indeed, InfoWars’ story about the fictitious NWS ammo order is part of its broader focus on the Department of Homeland Security’s plan to wage war on the American population.

That a United States Senator would lend even a smidgen of credence to this conspiratorial nonsense is disgraceful. But perhaps we shouldn’t be a surprise: InfoWars’ biggest mainstream booster is Matt Drudge, one of the most influential news sources on the American right. Naturally, InfoWars’ story on the NWS ammunition order was Drudge’s top link yesterday.
