NEWS FLASH

Commerce Secretary Resigns After Suffering Seizure | In a letter to Commerce Department employees, Secretary John Bryson resigned his post after health concerns were first raised nearly two weeks ago. Bryson, who was appointed by President Obama in 2011, had taken a leave of absence following an incident in Los Angeles where he struck several cars and was cited for a hit-and-run, but was not charged after it was revealed he had suffered a seizure. Dr. Rebecca Blank, the Deputy Secretary of Commerce, will assume the role of acting secretary. Bryson’s confirmation by the Senate in 2011 was a hard-fought battle for the White House, as Republicans voiced objections over Bryson’s strong ties to the environmental community. President Obama issued a statement this morning on the news: “Last night I accepted the resignation of John Bryson as Secretary of the Department of Commerce. I want to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation to John for his service over the past months, and wish him and his family the very best.”

Republican Congressman Attacks Commerce Secretary, Doubts He Actually Suffered From Seizure

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)

More than a day after Karl Rove’s Super PAC had to apologize for suggesting alcohol was involved in Commerce Secretary John Bryson’s seizure-induced car accident, a far right-wing Republican Congressman is casting doubt on the reported cause of the crash this weekend in California.

Salon’s Alex Seitz-Wald reports that, during an appearance on American Family Association Radio, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) mocked Bryson’s accident, wondered if a seizure had indeed caused the crash, and suggested Bryson was unfit for his position in government. Launching an attack on President Obama’s cabinet — “These are not the kind of people that you want heading up the country; they’re not honorable, honest people” — he said:

You got Bryson out in California. It’s really unusual to have a seizure cause you to have one wreck and then cause you to put your car in gear and keep going until you have another wreck. That kind of seizure is really unusual, y’know?

That’s who’s in charge of keeping businesses going — a guy that crashes his car from car to car.

Watch the video posted by Salon:

There’s an entirely plausible situation that could have led to the multiple crashes and obviates Gohmert’s theorizing about a conspiracy: Automatic transmission cars, by far more common today, stay in gear unless they are taken out of gear. When the brakes are not depressed, idling cars move forward at low speeds. Though all the details of Bryson’s crash are unknown, this likely scenario could have caused his car to keep moving and striking other vehicles.

During Gohmert’s remarks, one of the hosts of the right-wing Christian radio show can be seen and heard laughing.

Karl Rove’s Super PAC Jumps To Conclusions, Launches Attack On Commerce Secretary Who Suffered From Seizure

American Crossroads, the Super PAC run by former Bush adviser Karl Rove personally attacked Commerce Secretary John Bryson Monday morning, following his involvement in three car crashes.

As it turns out, Sec. Bryson had a seizure while at the wheel this weekend, leading to three separate collisions in the space of a few minutes.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, the group suggested that reports of Bryson’s car accidents involved alcohol use:

Bryson was given medication to treat his seizure after Saturday’s events. ABC news also reports that Bryson’s episode is not totally unprecedented: four years ago, the Secretary passed out during a board meeting and was taken to the hospital.

Update

American Crossroads spokesperson Jonathan Collegio apologized to TPM, “The hashtag (about his driving #skills) attempted levity, but it communicated poorly. We took it down,” he said. “I regret the tweet.”

America Has A Commerce Secretary Again

The Senate yesterday confirmed John Bryson to serve as Secretary of Commerce by a vote of 74 to 26 which served to illustrate how profoundly dysfunctional the American political system has become.

Recall that Bryson was nominated way back in June. He was nominated for a post that is only ever the subject of political controversy when a Census with redistricting implications is underway. He was nominated at a time of maximum distance from a Census controversy. Not only was it an utterly uncontroversial job, he was an utterly uncontroversial choice—a kind of old-time moderately conservative businessman with some environmentalist leanings. But Senate Republicans vowed to block him anyway. Not because they had objections to him, but because they wanted unrelated policy concessions. Specifically they wanted ratification of trade agreements that the Obama administration already supported. Since President Obama had already agreed to GOP demands, it was extremely difficult for him to give in to GOP demands. Then Republicans made a new demand that the trade deals couldn’t be ratified unless congress also stopped offering Trade Adjustment Assistance funding. At that point, Bryson was being held hostage to the ratification of trade deals that were being held up by Republicans! So the post languished vacant for months. Then finally the trade deals got signed late last week.

But in the intervening months Bryson had been hanging out there and so various complaints had to be made about him, and now 26 Senators have persuaded themselves that his tenure at the Commerce Department will lead to massive socialism or something.

At any rate, a round of applause is in order for Rebecca Blank. Confirmed as an Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs she then became Acting Deputy Secretary as that post became vacant in 2010. Then during the Bryson standoff she’s been serving as Acting Secretary. My assumption is that she’s now busted back down to Acting Deputy Secretary as well as presumably still being Undersecretary for Economic Affairs. Someday, maybe, we’ll adopt a form of government in which jobs aren’t regularly deemed so crucial as to require Senate confirmation but sufficiently trivial as to be allowed to have nobody doing them for years.

Inhofe: NRDC A ‘Radical Environmental Organization’ | Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) lashed out at President Obama’s pick of John Bryson to head Commerce: “[I]t is understandable that President Obama would select John Bryson as his nominee: he is a founder of a radical environmental organization and a member of a United Nations advisory group on climate change.” The Natural Resources Defense Council, co-founded 40 years ago by Bryson, has 1.3 million members, who support “radical” policies, such as limiting toxic chemicals in baby bottles. Its board of trustees include the top executives with The Gap, Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, and Tishman Construction.
