Ohio GOP Senate Candidate Wants New Plan To ‘Rescue The Auto Industry,’ But Admits Original Rescue Worked

The rescue of the American auto industry is likely to play a large role in the 2012 Ohio Senate race, where incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) will face a challenge from Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel (R). After Michigan, Ohio has the nation’s second largest auto industry, and the success of the auto rescue has been felt by suppliers and manufacturers across the state.

Since the 2008 rescue, America’s auto industry has rebounded, adding thousands of jobs, gaining market share, and posting record profits. Perhaps Mandel has missed those facts, because at the formal announcement of his Senate campaign Thursday, he hinted that he would be proposing a new plan to “rescue the auto industry,” the Youngstown Vindicator reports:

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, said he is developing a plan to “rescue the auto industry.”

When asked about the $82 billion government bailout of General Motors and Chrysler in 2009, Mandel said in a Thursday call to The Vindicator, “Our economy has not yet been rescued. So many people are still out of work.” [...]

I’m not saying the bailout didn’t work,” Mandel said.

“Mandel’s claim to be putting together a plan to rescue the industry is a laughably candid example of how completely clueless he is as to what’s going on with Ohio’s middle class and how he’ll say anything to get elected,” Brown spokesperson Justin Barasky told the Vindicator.

It’s unclear why, given the success of the original auto rescue, Mandel thinks a second is necessary. He didn’t offer any further details, only saying the “rescue” plan would be rolled out over the next six months as part of a larger manufacturing plan. He has not offered a formal position on the original auto rescue, though it was opposed by other statewide Republicans like Gov. John Kasich. His campaign did not respond to a request for details on his rescue plan, or to clarify his position on the original auto rescue.

GOP Senate Candidate Josh Mandel Wants To Frack Ohio State Parks Now

Ohio’s transparency-allergic treasurer and U.S. senate candidate Josh Mandel (R) is finally stepping out on stage by offering a certain type of policy positions: wildly unpopular. Mandel endorsed Gov. John Kasich’s (R) anti-labor law early this summer, insisting that Senate Bill 5 — a bill that was resoundingly defeated by police and firefighters — “is about respecting police and firefighters.” Now, Mandel is demanding that Ohio officials open up a national forest in Ohio to fracking — a policy 70 percent of Ohioans oppose. And he wants it done immediately.

Ohio’s Wayne National Forest is host to oil and gas wells, but none as deep and dangerous as those created by fracking, a method of deep natural gas drilling. The plan to lease 3,302 acres during a Dec. 7 public auction “inspired new fears” in Athens, OH about the possible pollution of the area water supply. These concerned prompted Wayne National Forest supervisor Anne Carey to withdraw the auction and begin an evaluation process that could take up to six months. Mandel slammed Carey for her concern, insisting that places like Mahoning Valley (which is about 150 miles away from the park) “will greatly benefit from fracking“:

“The Mahoning Valley is one of the areas that will greatly benefit from fracking,” said Mandel, who called The Vindicator on Thursday to discuss the issue as well as criticize a decision by a national forest supervisor in the Athens area for postponing a plan to lease more than 3,000 acres for oil and gas drilling.[...]

Mandel said the gas-and-oil business is booming and “a delay in drilling is a delay in job creation for the state of Ohio.”

The business can “rejuvenate parts of Ohio,” including the Valley, he said.

Once again, Mandel’s idea of “benefit” is questionable. Fracking has a long history of groundwater pollution, leaving entire towns with highly-contaminated water supplies. Indeed, some contaminated wells have been found to contain extremely high levels leukemia-causing benzene while others left people filling dizzy and caused horses and pets to lose their hair.

Ohio itself doesn’t have the greatest record with natural gas. One Cleveland home actually blew up after fracking forced gas into its water well. Just this week, a natural gas pipeline just south of the national park in Ohio exploded this week, “causing fires that destroyed three houses and a barn.” It’s the second to occur this year. Perhaps this is why Ohioans are dead set against the idea. Or perhaps this is just Mandel’s idea of rejuvenation.

Ohio GOP Candidate Josh Mandel Insists Ohio Anti-Labor Law ‘Is About Respecting Police And Firefighters’

On Tuesday, Ohioans will vote on Issue 2, a referendum on Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s (R) anti-workers’ rights law Senate Bill 5 (SB5). The bill strips teachers, police, and firefighters of their rights to collective bargain for better wages and working conditions. The bill is deeply unpopular.

This, however, has not stopped right-wing groups from flushing the pro-SB5 campaign with money or conservatives from insisting that the law helps local governments by preventing layoffs.

But while most Republicans at least acknowledge that the law disadvantages public employees, one Republican thinks the opposite. This summer, Ohio Treasurer and U.S. Senate candidate Josh Mandel said he supported Senate Bill 5 because the law, in his mind, actually “respect[s] police, and firefighters, and teachers” by giving “fiscal conservatives” the tools to ignore collective bargaining rights, which somehow “insur[es]that there is a state and there are local governments” down the road:

MANDEL: Well I’ve been supportive of Senate Bill 5…In my mind, it’s not about going after police, and firefighters and teachers. It’s about respecting police, and firefighters, and teachers and insuring that there is a state and there are local governments long into the future so that we have communities here in the state. The current level of spending in our state and our country? Simply unacceptable. And I think we need to put the tools in the tool belts of local government leaders and also people who are fiscal conservatives to bring this state into a sense of fiscal health. And that’s one of the reasons I’ve been supportive.

Watch it:

In what must come as a surprise to Mandel, Ohio’s teachers, police, firefighters, and even veterans feel slighted — not respected — by this bill. SB5 strips unions of the right to negotiate wages, eliminates pay increases, and completely bans the right to strike. As public officials and unions both note, teachers and safety forces have already made substantial sacrifices — including zero pay raises and paying more for health insurance — to accommodate the tough economy.

Ohio GOP Senate Candidate Refuses To Return Or Donate Nazi Reenactor’s Campaign Contribution | After learning that infamous Nazi reenactor Rich Iott donated to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel’s (R) U.S. Senate campaign this year, the National Jewish Democrats Council and others demanded that they return the donation or “donate it to a Holocaust memorial.” Though the Republican Jewish Committee congratulated House Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and other Republicans for spurning any affiliation with Iott last year, Mandel (who is Jewish) is refusing to return Iott’s $1,000 in campaign cash. Mandel’s spokesman dismissed the request as “a manufactured nonissue.”

State Paper Rips Ohio Senate Candidate For Failing To File Disclosure Forms More Than 120 Days Past Due | Last month, ThinkProgress reported that Ohio Treasurer and GOP Senate candidate Josh Mandel went 90 days past the due date for his financial disclosure forms. Now, more than 120 days overdue, “tested and trusted” Mandel is still failing this basic transparency test. And Ohio papers are taking note. This weekend, the Akron Beacon Journal editorial board blasted Mandel for his four-month failure, asking, “What is Mandel thinking?” “The form hardly poses an endurance test,” the board quipped, noting he filed similar forms with the Ohio Joint Legislative Ethics Committee as a state representative. Ohio Democrats have been noting his failure for a while, but the paper notes that “what amounted to the usual short-sheeting and towel-snapping by partisan adversaries cannot be dismissed so easily as the days and weeks mount.” Especially when “he already has a reputation for the political dark arts,” the board said, pointing to his “shameless campaign ad” for treasurer in which he purposefully — and falsely — implied his opponent was Muslim to “play[] on fears.”

90 Days Past Due Date, Ohio Senate Candidate Fails To File Personal Financial Disclosure Form | Ohio’s current Treasurer Josh Mandel (R) is challenging Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) for his seat in 2012. Running on the “tested and trusted” tagline, Mandel is failing the basic test of transparency. On April 6, Mandel filed paperwork for his Senate campaign with the Federal Elections Commission. According to federal law, a candidate’s personal financial disclosure must be filed within 30 days of declaring or after raising $5,000. But 90 days later, after both declaring his candidacy and raising $2.3 million for his race, Mandel has still failed to disclose. Indeed, the Secretary of the Senate’s office confirmed to ThinkProgress that no forms have been filed. By law, he is subject to a $200 fine. Mandel also faces a FEC investigation for violating another federal election law by using resources from the Treasurer’s office to support his candidacy.
