Tea Party Congressman: Attorney General Holder Is On The Side Of The Boston Bombers

A Republican Congressman suggested on Tuesday that Attorney General Eric Holder permitted a federal judge to read Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev his Miranda rights because the Obama cabinet official is biased towards terrorism. Since law enforcement officials captured Tsarnaev holed up in a boat on April 19th, conservatives have questioned why a federal judge Mirandized the suspect 16 hours after he was captured and have criticized the Justice Department for not stepping in and stopping the process.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) — who has spent the weeks following the bombing arguing that Obama’s “political correctness” prevented the FBI from stopping the attacks — appeared on the Glenn Beck radio show to argue that Holder’s history of defending terrorists allowed the judge to Mirandize Tsarnaev:

GOHMERT: Think about it, when your attorney general spent more of his legal career helping terrorists than defending the country, then you know we all have certain biases and lean certain ways.

Listen:

Gohmert then went on to reiterate his belief that the Obama administration is guided by the Muslim Brotherhood. “[The administration] know who’s in there advising them,” Gohmert said, “either they lie under oath or they do know the extent of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration into our government.”

This suggestion that the Obama Administration is somehow soft on terrorism is hard to square with the administration’s policies, especially since they’ve been widely criticized for erring too far in the opposite direction. Among other things, the FBI under Obama and Holder implemented a controversial interpretation of suspected terrorists’ Miranda rights that they invoked to delay Mirandizing Tsarnaev. The head of the ACLU labeled this interpretation of Mirandaun-American.”

Moreover, the actual version of events seems to contradict Gohmert’s narrative, however. According to the Wall Street Journal, Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler advised Tsarnaev of his Miranda rights, “even though investigators apparently still wanted to question him further under a public-safety exception.” Republicans have argued that Holder should have pushed back against Bowler’s decision.

Tea Party Congressman: Muslim Brotherhood Is Guiding Obama In Boston Bombings Investigation

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told a conservative radio program this week that the Obama administration “bungled” the investigation of the Boston bombing due to internal guidance from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Appearing on World Net Daily’s radio show, Gohmert speculated that Attorney General Eric Holder read bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev his Miranda rights to “shut him up” and undermine the investigation into the brothers’ possible ties to radical Islam. “It’s very clear to everybody but this administration that radical Islam is at war against us,” he said, before noting that Obama has displayed a “real pattern” of “incompetence” in responding to the threat from extremists during his tenure. He then suggested that members of the Muslim Brotherhood have infiltrated the administration and are leading the president astray:

Q: Some people are wondering whether or not the fact that it looks like radical Islam is once again a factor here is potentially a narrative that some folks don’t want publicly out there. Do you think that’s playing into this at all?

GOHMERT: I think it is… It’s very clear to everybody but this administration that radical Islam is at war agains us… Radical Islam is at war with us. Thank God for the moderates that don’t approve of what’s being done. But this administration has so many Muslim Brotherhood members that have influence that they just are making wrong decisions for America.

Listen:

Last year, Gohmert joined a small group of conservative lawmakers led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) to demand that the Inspectors General of four government agencies investigate “deep penetration” by the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. government. The Obama administration condemned the lawmakers for using false and inaccurate information to smear “anyone that happens to be Muslim.”

On Friday, Gohmert took the the House floor to suggest that Obama’s “political correctness” prevented the FBI from asking deceased Boston marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev about Islam during their 2011 interview.

GOP Congressman: Obama’s ‘Political Correctness’ On Islam Led To Boston Bombings

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggested on Friday that the FBI was unable to ask deceased Boston marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev about Islam during its 2011 interview with him due to President Obama’s “political correctness,” thus allowing the bombing to take place.

Gohmert said on the House floor that the Obama administration has prevented intelligence officials from discussing Islam. “It was in that 9/11 commission report, before this administration took over and implemented political correctness,” he said, arguing the FBI’s training manuals were “systematically purged” in 2011 to conform to Obama’s worldview.

Obama’s whitewashing of Islam, Gohmert hinted, allowed the Tsarnaev brothers to slip through the fingers of the FBI and set off bombs in Boston:

GOHMERT: But what kind of interview must that have been of the guy who was going to blow off arms and legs and kill a child and who had dreams of killing so many more. What kind of interview must that have been when you can’t use the word jihad, you can’t talk about his Muslim faith? Did they even bring up Tamerlan’s Muslim faith in that interview? [...] Is it any wonder that the FBI came away from their interviews and said, ‘We don’t find any problems?’ Well, I guess not. [...] What kind of interviews must those have been when you can’t use the terms that let you get to the bottom of what may be a plot to kill people down the road? There’s no problem in the Justice Department, there is a problem with leadership that will not let them do their job. And it needs to change.

The facts don’t line up with Gohmert’s claims, however. In 2011 it was revealed that FBI’s counterterrorism training courses were full of misleading views about Islam, including that mainstream Muslims are “violent” and “radical.” In response to the revelation, the FBI purged its training documents of all that mischaracterized all Muslims as being especially prone to terrorism.

When it comes to questioning Tsarnaev, the FSB — Russia’s domestic intelligence service — reached out to the United States in 2011 regarding its fears that he — an ethnic Chechen — was a security threat. In response, the FBI launched a three-month investigation into Tsarnaev, including interviews with him, his family, and his communications and internet usage. Following that review, the FBI determined there wasn’t enough evidence to continue to monitor Tsarnaev’s activities. When the FBI reported that to Russia in Oct. 2011, requesting further information about why the FSB believed Tsarnaev was a threat, Russia reportedly never responded.

Gohmert has proved no stranger to promoting wild theories related to Islam during his time in Congress. At various times, the Texan has stated that wide gun-ownership is needed to protect against Sharia law, that Obama intervened in Libya to allow al Qaeda to spread, and that the president is seeking to take credit for starting a new Ottoman Empire. Interfaith groups have called upon Gohmert in the past to drop his Islamophobia, seemingly to no effect.

Tea Party Congressman Exploits Manhunt For Suspected Boston Bomber To Advance Weaker Gun Laws

A Tea Party Congressman has joined a growing list of conservatives are seizing on the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect to argue for looser gun laws. Appearing on The Blaze Thursday afternoon, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggested that the Bostonians on lock down need high capacity magazines to protect themselves from violence. Via Kyle Mantyla at Right Wing Watch:

What hit me this morning when I heard the residents there around Boston and in the area where they thought someone might be were ordered to stay in their homes, businesses were ordered closed, public transportation was ordered closed. Let me ask you, if you’re sitting in your home and you know there are only two possibilities for people coming, one is law enforcement and the other is somebody who has already killed Americans and continues to do so, how many rounds do you want to be limited to in your magazine as you sit in your chair and wait?

Watch it:

Earlier this week, Gohmert claimed that the Boston tragedy should give pause to immigration reform advocates who seek to reform the system, an argument that several Republican leaders are now advancing.

Immigration

Congressman Says Bombings Reveal Danger Of Immigration Bill: ‘Radical Islamists…Are Trained To Act Hispanic’

During an appearance on CSPAN’s Washington Journal on Wednesday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) claimed that this week’s bombings of the Boston Marathon should give pause to immigration reform advocates who seek to reform the system.

“We have seen this in Israel,” Gohmert said of the Boston attacks and recalled visiting areas that had been struck by suicide bombers. “Finally the Israeli people said this is enough. They built a fence and the rest is a wall to prevent snipers from telling their kids. They finally stopped the domestic violence from people that wanted to destroy them. I am concerned we need to do that as well.”

The Tea Party favorite said he feared people entering the country illegally or posing as undocumented Hispanic immigrants could carry out “copycat things.” “We know Al Qaeda has camps on the Mexican border,” he said. “We have people that are trained to act Hispanic when they are radical Islamists.”

Gohmert criticized the bipartisan immigration bill unveiled by the Gang of 8 this week, arguing that it would give immigrants “a bit of amnesty.” “You have to understand that we want America to continue to be a haven for people that want to live free,” he added. “When you have the greatest liberties, you will draw people that want to destroy you.”

On Tuesday, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) also argued that the Boston attacks should slow down the immigration reform effort.

LGBT

Congressman Links Popular Gun Safety Measure To Bestiality

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) often offers creative explanations for his positions — for example, he opposes protecting LGBT people from employment discrimination because such protections are part of a “war on religion.” During a conference call interview today with noted homophobe Rick Scarborough about his new organization, Tea Party Unity, Gohmert explained that he opposes gun control legislation because it has the same kind of slippery slope as same-sex marriage:

In fact, I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week on the issue of, well, they said “surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you? How would that be problematic?”

And I pointed out, well, once you make it ten, then why would you draw the line at ten? What’s wrong with nine? Or eleven? And the problem is once you draw that limit ; it’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman any more, then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal?

There is no clear place to draw the line once you eliminate the traditional marriage and it’s the same once you start putting limits on what guns can be used, then it’s just really easy to have laws that make them all illegal.

Listen to it (via RightWingWatch):

The “slippery slope” is a logical fallacy, because it relies on fear in the absence of factual substantiation for the claims being made. There absolutely nothing to justify the suggestion that same-sex marriage will lead to polygamy or bestiality, just as there no evidence that anyone is trying to ban all bullets.

What’s disturbing about how Gohmert constructs his slippery slope arguments is how he uses them to justify each other. Not only does he draw comparisons between gun control and same-sex marriage, he also thinks guns are important because he fears the country is threatened by “Sharia Law.” Similarly, he doesn’t understand why women’s liberation groups aren’t outraged by “Sharia creep,” which he imagines would threaten their freedoms. At the same time, he staunchly opposes a women’s right to an abortion, which he compares to the national debt. In fact, he believes the debt compares not only to the immorality of abortion, but of slavery. And of course, Gohmert was all too willing to join The FAMiLY Leader’s Iowa bus tour after the group issued a pledge drawing comparisons between same-sex marriage and slavery.

In other words, fear seems to motivate every single one of Gohmert’s positions, and every one of Gohmert’s positions leads him to new fears.

GOP Rep Offers Amendment Prohibiting Obama From Playing Golf Until White House Tours Resume

On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced that the across-the-board sequester cuts will result in the cancellation of all White House tours indefinitely. This no doubt upset ticket holders, but it also seems to have struck a nerve with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), who introduced an amendment to a continuing resolution on the federal budget that seeks to block President Obama from using federal funds for any future golf outings until the tours are reinstated:

None of the funds made available by a division of this Act may be used to transport the President to or from a golf course until public tours of the White House resume.

Gohmert’s continuation of his party’s infatuation with Obama’s golf game distracts from the bigger picture: namely, that the Republican Party has thus far refused to compromise with the White House or congressional Democrats to delay or bypass entirely the sequestration, which would, among other things, fund White House tours.

And there was a suspicious lack of golf-related legislation from Gohmert when his own party took the opportunity to laud their own victory in the taxpayer-funded Congressional Challenge Cup.

GOP Congressman: The Debt Is As ‘Immoral’ As Slavery

A Republican Congressman this week compared the country’s debt to the United States’ history of slavery.

In an interview with the conservative magazine Newsmax, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) also equated excessive government spending and abortion, both of which he considers among the “most horrendous things this country has done”:

Slavery and abortion are the two most horrendous things this country has done but when you think about the immorality of wild, lavish spending on our generation and forcing future generations to do without essentials just so we can live lavishly now, it’s pretty immoral.”

The debt that has become the absolute focus of Washington is actually not nearly as big a problem as Republicans make it out to be. Government expenditures have grown at its slowest pace since the Eisenhower administration under President Obama and the latest projections from the Congressional Budget Office show that the nation’s deficits have shrunk by trillions of dollars, and the debt is close to being stabilized as a percentage of the economy. Certainly, it is nothing like the black mark of slavery on our nation’s history.

And even if Gohmert truly believes that the debt is such a vital issue of morality for the country, his party’s method of trying to reduce it — forcing austerity through spending cuts — is not the right solution. Drastic spending cuts will actually lead to greater debt, as evidenced by European austerity measures. Investment in the economy through additional spending coupled with higher revenues will help lower deficits for those future generations about which Gohmert is so seriously concerned.

The Nine Republican Men Who Won’t Consider Any Version Of The Violence Against Women Act

Nine Congressmen — all male Republicans — voted Wednesday against a resolution to allow the U.S. House to consider re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The vast majority of House Republicans (214) and all 200 House Democrats voted for rule, which will allow votes Thursday on the watered-down GOP version of the bill and (assuming that fails), the bipartisan Senate plan.

The nine Republicans were Representatives Paul Broun (GA), Scott Garrett (NJ), Louie Gohmert (TX), Tim Huelskamp (KS), Walter Jones (NC), Steve King (IA), Thomas Massie (KY), Tom McClintock (CA), and Matt Salmon (AZ).

Three of the nine — Gohmert, Jones, and King — voted for the watered-down Republican version of the bill last May, making their opposition to even bringing up the bill now a surprise. King said of the 2012 bill, “I supported VAWA in 2005 and am doing so again to see to it that victims of domestic violence and sexual assault have access to the resources and protection when they need it the most.”

While apparently none of the opponents has released a statement on today’s vote, some explained their opposition to last year’s bill. Huelskamp, in a letter to constituents, noted that he does not believe the federal government has a role in funding protection against domestic abuse. “This is a matter that should be left to our states,” he wrote, and Congress “should not be in the business of handing out grants conditioned on how states do or do not prosecute criminals.”

McClintock, in explaining his 2012 vote against VAWA, argued: “This is a feel-good measure that uses ‘Violence Against Women’ as an excuse to vastly expand a dizzying array of government grant programs, hamstring judges who are attempting to resolve and reconcile highly volatile relationships, add $1.8 billion to the nation’s debt and generally insinuate the federal government into matters the Constitution clearly reserves to the states. Federal grants of all kinds (essentially gifts of public money with little or no oversight) are out of control and ought to be abolished — not expanded.”

The landmark 1994 law, authored by then-Senator Joe Biden, expired more than a year ago.

Interfaith Group To GOP Congressman: Stop Demonizing Islam

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)

An interfaith group is speaking out against Rep. Louie Gohmert’s (R-TX) claim on Thursday that Americans need the Second Amendment’s protection in order to shield the nation from Sharia Law.

Speaking on a radio show called The Voice of Freedom, Gohmert insisted that “We’ve got some people who think Sharia Law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there… to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed.” In response, Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, President of the Interfaith Alliance, has sent a letter to Gohmert, protesting his “continued demonization of Islam”:

I feel compelled to again remind you that the continued demonization of Islam and disenfranchisement of the American Muslim community is not only uncalled for, it is a dangerous affront to the religious freedom upon which this nation was founded and it must end. American Muslims, the overwhelming majority of whom live peaceful, law-abiding lives — just like Americans from other religious groups — should not have to live in a country where their elected officials imply that they need to be kept at bay with firearms.

Furthermore, at a time when gun violence has wracked our nation with one unimaginable tragedy after another, I would hope that elected officials such as you would stay focused on real measures to prevent future needless deaths. I would hope that you would focus your attention on measures to truly balance the Second Amendment rights you so strongly defend, rather than derailing what should be a substantive policy discussion with misguided bigotry.

Gohmert has been in trouble before with the Interfaith Alliance, having also received a letter from them during his partnership with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) to persecute Muslim-American government officials. Gorhmert has also during his time in Congress called for hearings on the dangers of Sharia and claimed that President Obama went to war in Libya to help Al Qaeda spread across the Middle East.

Rev. Gaddy also included with his letter a copy of a text titled “What is the Truth About American Muslims: Questions and Answers,” produced by Interfaith Alliance and the Religious Freedom Education Project of the First Amendment Center. Congressman Gohmert’s office did not immediately respond to an e-mailed question regarding whether or not he had read over, or plans to read, the resource.

The full text of the letter can be read after the break.
