Meghan McCain: If GOP Doesn’t Wake Up, May Leave Party | In a sharply worded The Daily Beast op/ed Friday, Meghan McCain warned the Republican Party that if it does not “wake up” and modernize on social issues, she may leave her party. Noting that, “I don’t fit into the traditional Republican box that the wingnuts who have hijacked my party think all Republicans should,” she wrote, “I also don’t believe it’s the government’s role to tell gays and lesbians that they can’t be given the same opportunities in American just because of who they love.” McCain notes that if it does not adapt, the GOP will not survive and that if she does not see signs of moderation on social issues, she “will consider registering as an Independent in 2016.”

Meghan McCain Hits Obama For Opposing Marriage Equality | During an appearance on MSNBC this morning, marriage equality proponent Meghan McCain suggested that the GOP presidential candidates should realize that “gay marriage in this country is a civil rights issue and not a political one,” but noted that President Obama has also failed to lead on the issue. “It’s not like President Obama is out there, you know, passing gay marriage everywhere in this country,” she added. Meghan McCain Says GOP Should Get Behind DREAM Act, But Not Before Christmas

Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) filed a cloture motion on the DREAM Act, setting up a vote that will take place tomorrow. It still remains unclear — if not unlikely — that the legislation will attract the 60 votes needed to limit debate.

One lawmaker who isn’t even on the list of Senate targets is Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Despite the fact that he was supportive of the DREAM Act in the past, advocates seem pretty confident that he will stick to his new enforcement-only stance. His daughter — Meghan McCain — however, is slightly more open-minded. Ms. McCain told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell this week that she supports the DREAM Act in theory, but is opposed to the way it is being “jammed” through by Reid:

O’DONNELL: The DREAM Act provides for them a no-cost path to legalization in this country if they should choose it. Is that something you think Republicans should be able to get behind? The Wall Street Journal thinks it’s a good idea.

MCCAIN: I do. I understand and I think the greatest part about being an American is that you can have any education you want. You can be anything you want to be. [...] I worry about the costs. I worry about the legalities of it. But, as a general whole, yes, I do believe that if you’ve been living in this country for five years as a student you should have access to education. [...] I think Harry Reid is trying to jam this through without everyone being able to really analyze what’s really going on in this bill.

But as a general whole yes, I do believe that everyone should have access to any kind of education — especially if you’re going to serve your country in the military. [...] I just don’t know if two weeks away from Christmas with all the things going on in the economy is an appropriate time to be doing this.

Watch it:

Meghan McCain’s hesitations about the DREAM Act don’t really hold water. The DREAM Act has been around since 2001 and you’d think most Republicans would be aware of the changes made to the modified 2010 bill as they were meant to address their concerns. Meanwhile, the CBO found that the DREAM Act would reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion over ten years. I’m not sure what McCain is talking about when she refers to the “legality” of the DREAM Act, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that she seems to think it provides “access to education” when what it really does is allow undocumented immigrants who pursue an education (and pay for it themselves) or serve in the military to actually make something of themselves by legally working in the U.S.

Of course, Meghan McCain doesn’t get a vote and she also doesn’t seem to have much influence over her obstinate father — so her qualified support and misinformed concerns about the DREAM Act aren’t really going to affect what happens tomorrow one way or another. However, I predict that, if the DREAM Act fails tomorrow, so-called “moderate” Republicans will be toeing a similar line when the Latino community demands an answer from them in an attempt to minimize the damage done by voting against an issue Latino voters deeply care about.

And, since these arguments don’t hold up, allow me to translate what they really mean: the DREAM Act is a good idea unless it’s being pushed right before Christmas by a Democrat like Harry Reid. It’s a slightly more nuanced message than simply calling it “amnesty.”

Joe the Plumber agrees with Meghan McCain: I’m just a ‘dumb plumber.’

joe-the-plumber-web1Last week, Meghan McCain responded to Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher’s claim that he doesn’t want “queers…anywhere around my children.” “Joe the Plumber — you can quote me — is a dumbass,” she said. “He should stick to plumbing.” Not taking her advice to “stick to plumbing,” Wurzelbacher showed up at an “Average Joes, Powerful Voices” event in Greenville, WI yesterday to speak to those protesting “taxes and government spending.” But it appeared that he agreed, at least in part, with Meghan McCain’s criticism:

Wurzelbacher described himself as a “dumb plumber” who nevertheless could understand the Constitution. His themes and complaints in a 13-minute speech were similar to those voiced by speakers before and after him in the two-hour-plus event. He criticized wasteful government spending, lack of accountability, the disconnect between Christian values and politics, and political correctness.

“Washington has no idea what’s going on here or anywhere else,” Joe the Plumber said in an interview after the event. “So we need to govern ourselves more and go back to state rights.” Seeming to then take issue with McCain’s (and his own) characterization, he also criticized those who paint him as a “bad person” or “some ignorant red-neck who doesn’t have anything to say about anything.” “[It's] not true you know,” he said. “I’m very educated, I know what I’m talking about, I know the facts.”

Meghan McCain: ‘Joe the Plumber — you can quote me — is a dumbass.’

joeThe day before the White House Correspondents dinner, Jamie Kirchick interviewed Meghan McCain for Out, largely focusing on her outspoken support of gay rights. During the interview, McCain took a crack at a man her father made famous during last year’s presidential campaign, Joe the Plumber:

Yet even as the balance begins to shift, the old guard is still yapping in the foreground. Shortly before McCain sat for this interview, Samuel Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, gave an interview to Christianity Today in which he complained about “queers” and declared, “I wouldn’t have them anywhere near my children.” Unprompted, McCain rails against the man her father’s presidential campaign touted as an American everyman and made a showpiece in the weeks before the election. “Joe the Plumber — you can quote me — is a dumbass. He should stick to plumbing.”

Wurzelbacher later followed that comment up by saying, “Men kissing each other…it throws me off.” “It’s not something I want around my family,” he told a local ABC affiliate in Toledo, OH.

Meghan McCain: ‘Most of the old school Republicans are scared shitless’ of the future.

In an address to the Log Cabin Republicans yesterday, Meghan McCain said that her recent public disagreements with conservative figures including Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham have reinforced her belief that most “old school Republicans” are “scared shitless” of the future. McCain said that the Republican party must challenge “the mold and the notions of what being a Republican means” by embracing what she called being a “progressive Republican“:

mmccain1.jpgSo tonight, I am proud to join you in challenging the mold and the notions of what being a Republican means. I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican.

Despite the fact that the Log Cabin Republicans advocate on behalf of gay and lesbian interests in the Republican party, McCain only tangentially addressed her own views on gay rights. She expressed her hope that all people could live “in full equality with each other.”

Steele skipping Log Cabin Republican convention.

steele.jpgLater this week, the Log Cabin Republicans are hosting their national convention in Washington, DC, which will feature appearances by former New Jersey governor Christie Todd Whitman, former congressman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Meghan McCain. In her Daily Beast column today, McCain reveals that RNC Chairman Michael Steele was invited to speak, but declined due to scheduling issues:

Former Virginia Congressman Tom Davis, a well-respected Republican lawmaker who has made no bones about his desire to see the GOP move on from its obsession over social issues, is also speaking. I understand that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was invited to speak, but was unable to schedule an appearance.

Steele’s absence will be conspicuous considering that the Log Cabin Republicans initially cheered his election to the chairmanship, but issued a stinging rebuke of his claim that it was “crazy” for the GOP to even “consider” civil unions for same-sex couples.

Meghan McCain prematurely slams Obama for going on Leno and ignoring the financial crisis.

Yesterday on Twitter, Meghan McCain hit President Obama’s decision to go on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

hmmm, maybe the president shouldn’t go on leno and talk about basketball and instead explain to me how those morons at AIG got bonuses…

But as Huffington Post’s Sam Stein points out, “Perhaps Meghan shouldn’t have been so impatient with her critiques.” In fact, Obama referenced AIG at least seven times, and the New York Times wrote that “most of the discussion was devoted — perhaps for the first time in the show’s history — to in-depth discussions of tax policy, as well as macroeconomics and finance.” From his appearance last night:

I think that part of the calculation they were making was the way the contracts were written said, if you don’t pay us immediately, then we can claim three times as much as we were owed under the bonuses. … We’re going to do everything we can to see if we can get these bonuses back.

In e-mail blast, Ingraham calls Meghan McCain a ‘useful idiot.’

In an e-mail message today titled “useful idiot watch,” right-wing talker Laura Ingraham sends a “Memo to Meghan McCain,” claiming that her “plus-sized” attack was just “one satirical line” that the left is now using “to malign outspoken conservatives.” Ingraham claims that “indignation” over her “off-the-cuff remark” is “manufactured and totally phony“:

ingraham1.jpgThe left’s indignation in this instance is manufactured and totally phony. If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman’s size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson’s “weight battle” during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer? And of course they look the other way when obvious personal attacks are levied against conservatives. Remember when Al Franken was the toast of all media for his book “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot”? Last month The View’s Joy Behar called him a “fat guy”; and when I was a guest on The View a few years back she ridiculed Ann Coulter and me as “peroxide” blondes on Fox. I laughed it off. If you can’t stand the heat…get out of the punditry business.

In a nod to ThinkProgress, Ingraham closes her e-mail by encouraging her readers to “click here to listen to the entire segment from March 13th, instead of the version that was edited and sent around by left wing smearmongers.”

Meghan McCain Tells Laura Ingraham: ‘Kiss My Fat Ass!’ Ingraham Responds That She Should ‘Lighten Up’

Last week, ThinkProgress first reported that right-wing radio host Laura Ingraham responded to Meghan McCain’s criticism of conservatives like Ann Coulter by mocking her as “plus-sized.” McCain responded to Ingraham on Twitter, telling her to “stop talking about my body.”

Today, McCain went on ABC’s The View, and the show opened with a discussion about Ingraham’s remarks. A clearly perturbed McCain said Ingraham was essentially discouraging young women from speaking their minds:

McCAIN: What do young women think when I speak my mind about politics and I want to have a political discussion abot the ideological future of the Republican party, and the answer is, “She’s fat, she shouldn’t have an opinion. What kind of message are we sending young women? … It infuriates me. I’m a political writer on a blog, and all of a sudden I’m too fat to write?

The ladies of The View were disgusted by Ingraham’s remarks. Conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck called it a “low blow.” “The thing that makes it particularly annoying is that Laura Ingraham says she is someone who stands up for conservative women,” said Whoopi Goldberg. McCain continued to tear into Ingraham, telling her to kiss her ass:

McCAIN: When Tyra Banks went on her show in her bathing suit and said, “Kiss my fat ass.” That’s what I feel right now. I’m like “Kiss my fat ass!”

“I couldn’t possibly imagine how any woman could criticize another woman’s weight,” McCain said. Watch it:

While the show was airing, Ingraham responded on her radio show. “I think Meghan McCain is a delightful, lovely person,” she said. “But now Meghan is so thin skinned and the lovelies on The View are so in search of material.” Ingraham continued to mock McCain with a Valley-girl voice, and she added that McCain needs to “lighten up”:

INGRAHAM: But look the bottom line is it’s rough and tumble out there. You wanna put yourself out there as someone who’s going to redirect the future of the Republican party, and you’re going to have to deal with satire. You’re gonna have to deal with people teasing. You’re gonna have to deal with, you know, sometimes the kitchen gets a little hot! …. You gotta just take a chill pill. … Can I say lighten up or is that offensive too?

Listen here:

Writing about the spat with Ingraham on her Daily Beast blog this weekend, McCain wrote that “instead of intellectually debating our ideological differences about the future of the Republican Party, Ingraham resorted to making fun of my age and weight.” “At this point, I have more respect for Ann Coulter than I do for Laura Ingraham because at least Coulter didn’t come back at me with heartless, substance-less attacks about my weight,” wrote McCain.
