Theatrical Slut Shaming: Daily Caller Attacks Ashley Judd For Nude Scenes

It’s a sign of how anxious the right wing is about the possibility that Ashley Judd might run for Senate against Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that the attacks on her have geared up before she’s even formally entered the race. There’s the American Crossroads ad trying to frame her as out of touch with a series of relatively anodyne and contextless quotations. And now, the Daily Caller, which has been trying to frame Judd’s feminist beliefs as fringe, has launched the stupidest salvo against her at all: arguing that Judd, because she has done nude scenes for her work as an actress, “has—literally—nothing left to show us.” In an exceptionally gross piece, Taylor Bigler, the Caller’s Entertainment Editor (Entertainment, in Caller parlance, apparently means surfing Mr. Skin and publishing clickbait trash gossip) writes:

We are used to knowing just about everything there is to know about serious political candidates. But will Judd be the first potential senator who has — literally — nothing left to show us? The actress has bared her breasts in several films and has had some raunchy sex scenes in others. According to MrSkin.com, which bills itself as “the largest free nude celebrity movie archive,” Judd has flashed just about everything on-screen. It seems like she was particularly liberal with nudity early on in her career…Judd did a lesbian sex scene in 2002′s Oscar-nominated “Frida” and has nine other films categorized as “sexy” by Mr. Skin, meaning that there is at least one racy scene in those films.

It may come as a surprise to the Daily Caller, but actresses don’t generally take their clothes off on-screen as an expression of some sort of groovy seventies lifestyle, or as a way to have sex with people who are not their spouses or partners. Rather, getting asked to take off some or all of your clothes is, for a lot of actors, a frequent requirement of the job, and something that until recently, tended to be asked of women more frequently than men. When men do get fully naked on-screen, they’re often protected to a certain extent by the comedic framing of the scene, whether it’s Jason Segel stripping down in Forgetting Sarah Marshall for a scene in which his character expects to surprise his girlfriend and ends up getting dumped by her after he refuses to get dressed, or Will Ferrell going streaking in Old School. There’s a separation between actors and their bodies—no one considers men who get naked the sum of junk, the kind of person who, in real life, would pound a lot of beers at a frat party and take off, flapping in the breeze, down a suburban street. Ferrell can get down to his BVDs and still be happily married, raise money for cancer charities, and play the straight man in movies like Stranger Than Fiction. We know that Michael Fassbender is not actually the sex addict he portrayed in Shame in the same way that we know that he doesn’t actually have the capability to manipulate metal with his mind possessed by another one of his characters, X-Men‘s Magneto.

But with actresses, that division appears to be less certain. If a woman takes off her top in a movie, much less baring it all, Mr. Skin and his ilk will be there to catalogue it to make sure people who only want to see her as, in the parlance of that site, “breasts, butt, bush, underwear, sexy,” can skip the parts of her performance that would give her character humanity and context, and would remind us that she’s a woman playing a part. The movies Ashley Judd’s taken her clothes off in tend to have that kind of context, whether she’s playing a woman in love with a mentally ill man who claims to be a veteran in Bug or in Norma Jean and Marilyn, a biopic of Marilyn Monroe, a woman who, in real life, was devoured by audiences’ inability to see both her body and her mind simultaneously. If an actress goes nude for roles frequently, as, say, Lena Dunham has, she’s likely to be the subject of speculation about whether she’s some sort of exhibitionist, rather than whether her nudity enhances her roles, as if there’s no possible creative reason she could have for taking off her clothes or doing sex scenes. It’s a bizarre suspension of logic that applies to all other on-screen actions: no one thinks that Judd’s been married to a southern lawyer pulled into a racially-tinged trial, as she was in Time To Kill, or that she’s killed the ex-husband who framed her for murder as she did in Double Jeopardy, or gives her credit for knowing how Washington and politics work because she’s playing the First Lady in the forthcoming Olympus Has Fallen.

DONATE: Help Sandra Fluke Combat The War On Women

Thank you for reading ThinkProgress. This is the first in a series of fundraising messages about our work. DONATE HERE to help fund our one-of-a-kind, progressive reporting.

Sandra Fluke knows all about the GOP’s War on Women. And she knows that ThinkProgress has been right there on the front lines, covering everything from Rush Limbaugh’s sexist smears, to Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comments, to state-level efforts to defund Planned Parenthood:

Sandra understands that ThinkProgress plays an important role as we work to shine a spotlight on the anti-woman efforts of the GOP. Our coverage has helped win important victories, like when more than 100 companies pulled their advertisements from Limbaugh’s show after we publicized his attacks on Sandra.

But we know that the War on Women isn’t disappearing any time soon. Just a few days after the election ended, lawmakers across the country revived their efforts to push anti-choice legislation through their lame duck sessions.

We want to ensure we can continue our vital coverage into 2013 and beyond. Please consider donating.

Joe Walsh Tells Women’s Health Advocate To ‘Get A Job’

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL)

Rep. Joe Walsh, the ornery Republican Congressman from Illinois, is known for trying to diminish his opponents’ their accomplishments. Earlier this year he said of Tammy Duckworth, the woman running against him for his Congressional seat, “Female, wounded veteran … ehhh.”

Walsh is now attacking women’s health advocate Sandra Fluke, joining a long list of Republicans in denigrating Fluke after her speech at the Democratic National Convention.. Over the weekend, Walsh complained that Fluke should “get a job” and stop talking about affordable contraception because “we’ve got parents in this country who are struggling”:

Think about this, a 30, 31, 32 year old law student who has been a student for life, who gets up there in front of a national audience and tells the American people, ‘I want America to pay for my contraceptives. You’re kidding me. Go get a job. Go get a job Sandra Fluke. This is what — I was offended.

We’ve got Americans who are struggling, we’ve got parents in this country who are struggling to buy sneakers that their kids can wear to school that just started. We’ve got parents up and down my district who are barely keeping their house.

Watch it:

It seems lost on Walsh that parents who cannot afford contraception will then have unintentional pregnancies resulting in more children they also cannot afford. As does the fact that Fluke’s testimony before Congress told the story of a friend who couldn’t pay for contraceptives; it was not about Fluke’s own need for birth control.

Additionally, Fluke has, in fact, held a job: According to her own bio, “she worked at Sanctuary for Families in New York City, combating domestic violence and human trafficking.”

Fluke earned national attention some months back when House Republicans barred her from testifying about women’s need for contraceptive access. Adding insult to injury, conservatives publicly trashed Fluke. Most famously, radio host Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut” who has “so much sex” that she cannot afford contraception.

Conservatives Bash Sandra Fluke’s Convention Speech, Parroting Limbaugh’s Sexist Attacks

Despite the widespread outcry against Rush Limbaugh’s and Bill O’Reilly’s sexist smears against Sandra Fluke earlier this year — when they claimed she was a “slut” who wants the government to pay for her “social life” — other far-right commentators haven’t quite grasped why these types of attacks are offensive. After Fluke took to the stage of the Democratic National Convention last night to articulate the issues at stake in the ongoing War on Women, conservative media took to Twitter to bash her for “whining” about needing free birth control for the activities that go on in her “bedroom”:

Aside from misrepresenting Fluke’s point that women should not have to pay more than men do for essential preventative health services, including contraception, these smears degrade Fluke as a woman. In fact, Fluke speaks for the one in three American women who report struggling to afford birth control, and does not need to apologize for either her sexuality or her demand for equitable health care. And although some commentators decried Fluke for “only” talking about birth control rather than addressing other political themes, as if contraception is merely a petty and personal issue, access to health services like contraception is inextricably linked to economic issues.

WATCH: Sandra Fluke Explains The Republican War On Women In 144 Seconds

Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown Law student who was dragged into the national spotlight after Rush Limbaugh referred to her as a slut, said Wednesday it is time to choose between being “a country that honors our foremothers by moving us forward, or one that forces our generation to re-fight the battles they already won.”

In a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., she warned:

Your new president could be a man who stands by when a public figure tries to silence a private citizen with hateful slurs. Who won’t stand up to the slurs, or to any of the extreme, bigoted voices in his own party. It would be an America in which you have a new vice president who co-sponsored a bill that would allow pregnant women to die preventable deaths in our emergency rooms. An America in which states humiliate women by forcing us to endure invasive ultrasounds that we don’t want and our doctors say we don’t need. An America in which access to birth control is controlled by people who will never use it; an America in which politicians redefine rape so survivors are victimized all over again; in which someone decides which domestic violence victims deserve access to services, and which don’t.

Watch the video:

Fluke contrasted that possibility with the supportive reception she received from a president who reached out to support her, strangers who lifted her up, and a convention that invited her to speak. She encouraged America to choose to be “a country where we mean it when we talk about personal freedom,” rather than “one where that freedom doesn’t apply to our bodies and our voices.”

NEWS FLASH

Fluke Condemns Hustler’s Pornographic Depiction Of Conservative Columnist | Sandra Fluke — who first came to prominence for her opposition to the GOP’s efforts to restrict women’s access to birth control — is speaking out against Hustler magazine’s doctored pornographic image of conservative commentator S.E. Cupp. The Georgetown law student took to Twitter to call the depiction “offensive”:

The fake picture shows Cupp with a penis in her mouth and criticizes her “dumb ideas like defunding Planned Parenthood.” Hustler publisher Larry Flynt has defended the graphic, calling it “satire.”

Update

Gloria Steinem has also denounced Hustler.
