In 2011, intimate partner violence in LGBT couples increased by 18.3 percent. Homicides in the LGBT/HIV community hit a record high. At the same time, Native American women experienced domestic violence — physical violence, stalking, and sexual assault — at much higher rate, about 2.5 times the average American woman. The true statistics for undocumented victims are unknown: They often don’t report crimes against them, for fear of being deported.

But despite these tragic statistics, a version of the Violence Against Women Act that would protect these groups has been caught up in Congressional gridlock. While the Senate passed an inclusive version of the bill months ago, House Republicans refuse to vote on a version that protects LGBT, Native American, and undocumented victims. With just days before the legislative year is over, Republican leadership is running out of time to put this life-saving bill up for a vote.
